Summertime recommendations

My rec lists are woefully out of date, so it's time to rectify that. There are a bunch of recs under the cut, but one very special ficlet gets above-the-fold treatment =)

Title: Love You (2011)
Author: GloriaFan
Fandom: Kids Inc
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: Romance
Rating: K+
Warning: N/A
Pairing: Ryan/Stacy
Word Length: 313
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7032322/1/
Author's Summary: Saying you love somebody means something, but it means more when you know they love you back. Short bit of giftfic fluff for LuxKen27.

Why I'm recommending this piece: This was a complete and total surprise, and a very much appreciated one. GloriaFan is the other prolific KI fanwriter at the moment, and I've basically over the moon to have stories for that fandom to read that didn't come from my pen. GF messaged me yesterday to alert me to this story, which he put up "just because" =) It's a beautiful little piece of fluff, the sort that pushes all my ooey-gooey romantic buttons for this, my oldest and most enduring OTP ♥

Recommendations: General Hospital
Title: Serendipity (2006)
Author: YanksLuver
Fandom: General Hospital
Universe: Canon
Genre: Comedy/Romance
Rating: K+
Warning: some innuendo
Pairing: Patrick Drake/Robin Scorpio
Word Length: 5,569
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2893531/1/
Author's Summary: After Robin and Patrick become trapped in a supply closet, they learn a few interesting facts about each other and realize they share a surprising connection to the past.

Why I'm recommending this piece: Because it is hilarious and snarky and touching and amazing. The supply closet is something of a running in-joke on GH, with various couples using it as a rendezvous point for a quick hookup, hence the hilarity of these two getting 'trapped' in the closet, and why the others immediately jump to conclusions when they're found. I also love this fic because the dialogue is very snappy and witty, and perfectly fitting with the sort of flirtatious sparring these two engaged in during their courtship. Patrick's a player, and Robin's not afraid to call him on it, which makes for some very sharp exchanges. What makes this story touching is the background the author weaves into the piece, of these two having unknowingly met before, a memory they both recall in a moment that brings them closer together than either ever expected.

Title: Home is Where the Heart Is (2006)
Author: YanksLuver
Fandom: General Hospital
Universe: Canon divergence
Genre: Drama/Romance
Rating: K
Warning: N/A
Pairing: Patrick Drake/Robin Scorpio
Word Length: 19,864 (5 chapters)
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2937908/1/
Author's Summary: Robin and Patrick travel to his hometown for his grandmother's funeral.

Why I'm recommending this piece: This was actually the first story by YanksLuver that I read, and I was simply blown away. From what I can tell, this is a divergence from canon, a little side story that delves further into Patrick's background and family. Robin accompanies him when he returns to his hometown for his grandmother's funeral, and learns more about him that she bargained for - and, in the process, he finally makes a move towards her, much to the delight of his meddling aunts :) Here again is evidence of strong writing and characterization, with a mixture of light humor and heavy romance. I was on the edge of my seat as the story progressed, with Patrick getting past some of the roadblocks in his life and finally being willing to admit just what Robin had come to mean to him. It's a beautiful story, one I'd recommend even to those not familiar with the canon.

Title: Charade (2006)
Author: YanksLuver
Fandom: General Hospital
Universe: Canon
Genre: Drama/Romance
Rating: K
Warning: N/A
Pairing: Patrick Drake/Robin Scorpio
Word Length: 3,421
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3034175/1/
Author's Summary: Robin and Patrick finally speak following their breakup, during which Robin confronts Patrick about the man he pretends to be.

Why I'm recommending this piece: This is a wonderful example of this author's versatility, in being able to write such a somber, heavy scene between her characters, who had just had a huge fight in canon and would not resolve it for some time. She even admits in her author's note that its a bit of wish fulfillment, only because it seems to be the name of the game in soap opera land to milk the agony of a breakup for all its worth. Here, she makes Patrick and Robin strong, each finding a way to take a stand for the other, even in the midst of their drama and heartache. There is also some nice exposition and comparison of their relationship to the one she had with Jason before Patrick appeared on the scene. It's a great piece with a bittersweet ending.

Recommendations: Heroes
Title: Quite Comfortable (2007)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] paynesgrey
Fandom: Heroes
Universe: Canon (Season 1)
Genre: Comedy/Romance
Rating: M
Warning: sexual innuendo, nudity, incestuous flirtation
Pairing: Peter/Claire
Word Length: 1,606
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3545097/1/
Author's Summary: Claire's comfort zone with her newly discovered uncle is tested. Canon Paire. Incest implications. UST. [oneshot]

Why I'm recommending this piece: I'm a sucker for Peter/Claire (or, at least, [livejournal.com profile] paynesgrey's take on them), and this is a really cute oneshot, full of one-up-manship, in a battle over nudity and towel size and very strange Petrelli customs :P Claire is suitably feisty, and Peter suitably chided, as each discover a new piece of attraction - and work hard to fight it, now that they've discovered they're related. The banter is witty and cute, and the encounter full of delicious UST, as promised by the summary - a definite don't miss if you're a fan of their pairing, or sexual flirtation in general :D

Title: A Stranger's Gain (2007)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] paynesgrey
Fandom: Heroes
Universe: Canon
Genre: Angst/Drama
Rating: T
Warning: one-sided incestuous feelings
Pairing: Peter/Niki
Word Length: 587
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3604973/1/
Author's Summary: Claire doesn't like Peter's new girlfriend. Claire POV. Peter x Niki Warning for some incest feelings. Oneshot

Why I'm recommending this piece: I LOVE THIS. It is a beautiful portrait of the agony of unrequited love, as Claire meets her uncle Peter's new girlfriend for the first time, at her high school graduation. This little ficlet artfully blends one of the alt universes into the main canon timeline as well, in a way, bringing it all full circle. Claire suffers in silence on what is supposed to be one of the happiest days of her life, as she realizes the man she loves is out of her reach, and there's nothing she can do about it. Exquisitely written.

Recommendations: Baby-sitters Club
Title: Dear Stacey (2007)
Author: The Lady Elizabeth
Fandom: Baby-sitters Club
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: Tragedy/Friendship
Rating: T
Warning: Character death
Pairing: N/A
Word Length: 2,012
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3810356/1/
Author's Summary: Am I just supposed to forget that you ever even existed or that you’ve just gone away for a while on some fabulous vacation? Sometimes, letters are the only way to work things out in your own head.

Why I'm recommending this piece: A hauntingly poignant piece about the value of friendship and its lasting effects. THe author quite skillfully weaves Claudia's letters to Stacey into the storyline, using an almost epistolary style, with an angst-filled climax and denouement. When she says tragedy, she means it - stay away from this one if you don't want to cry.

Title: Memory (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen
Fandom: Baby-Sitters Club
Universe: Canon
Genre: Family
Rating: K+
Warning: N/A
Pairing: N/A
Word Length: 717
URL: http://babysitters100.livejournal.com/31664.html
Author's Summary: "Andrew," Karen said, looking at him over the top of her book, "did you know a goldfish will forget everything after just three seconds?"

Why I'm recommending this piece: This is a quiet, introspective piece on one of the most minor of minor characters from the BSC - Andrew Brewer, Karen's little brother. The question Karen poses in the summary sends sensitive Andrew into a fit of introspection, finding answers he might not be ready to hear to questions he never wanted asked. It's a beautiful little piece, and [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen captures the spirit of shy, quiet Andrew with perfection :)

Title: Ocean (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen
Fandom: Baby-Sitters Club
Universe: Pre-canon
Genre: Romance
Rating: X
Warning: Explicit sex
Pairing: John Pike/Dee Pike
Word Length: 4,585
URL: http://babysitters100.livejournal.com/31954.html
Author's Summary: The beach is crowded with girls, and John Pike can't stop thinking about one in particular...

Why I'm recommending this piece: LOL, it's probably quite obvious that I'm a huge fan of [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen's work, but it seems she has a particular gift for writing pre-canon parent-centric fic. This entry focuses on the first summer that John and Dee Pike meet, and it is every bit as warm, frothy, and summery as you could want. What I particularly like about this story is how well she integrates the prompt word into it - the descriptions are lush and beautiful, and I felt almost immediately transported to the beach. This is a beautiful origin fic, and explains one of the quirks of BSC canon - how and why the Pikes selected Sea City, NJ for their annual vacation spot.

Title: Lipstick (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] isabelquinn
Fandom: Baby-Sitters Club
Universe: Canon
Genre: Introspection
Rating: K
Warning: N/A
Pairing: N/A
Word Length: 889
URL: http://babysitters100.livejournal.com/32940.html
Author's Summary: Tiffany Kilbourne tries to learn how to use lipstick.

Why I'm recommending this piece: A companion piece to 'Snob,' this time [livejournal.com profile] isabelquinn takes us for a journey inside Tiffany Kilbourne's head, and how she feels stuck - not quite ready to handle the things that her classmates are into/deem important, but ready to move on from bits of her childhood. She finds herself contemplating a tube of lipstick in the mirror, wondering why she ever bought it, since she has no desire to wear it. It's a really lovely piece, with a twist of bittersweetness at the end, when she has a breakdown in communication with her sister. This is a beautifully wrought piece.

Title: Wish (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lucida
Fandom: Baby-Sitters Club
Universe: Post-canon [BSLS]
Genre: Angst
Rating: K
Warning: N/A
Pairing: N/A
Word Length: 929
URL: http://babysitters100.livejournal.com/34158.html
Author's Summary: No one understands Natalie.

Why I'm recommending this piece: Poor Natalie Springer - not only was she an outcast in the Baby-sitter's Little Sister series (starring Karen), but she was also an object of pity for one of the BSC regular series subplots. She's shy and awkward and completely aware of it - and, in this story at least, she realizes that she will probably always feel this way. My heart went out to Natalie in this story; she's hurting, but she hides it well. This is bittersweet satisfaction at its finest.

Title: Seeing Red Again (2011)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snarky_imp
Fandom: Baby-Sitters Club
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: Light humor/romance
Rating: K+
Warning: Watch out for the twist at the end
Pairing: Sam Thomas/Stacey McGill (implied)
Word Length: 1,292
URL: http://snarky-imp.livejournal.com/648873.html#cutid1
Author's Summary: N/A

Why I'm recommending this piece: [livejournal.com profile] snarky_imp says she blames me for this one, but I'll happily take credit =) This is a cute little story, told by Kristy, of the part she unknowingly played in helping Sam prepare his proposal to Stacey. She really has a good sense of Kristy's voice, I think, and I was giggling throughout the story as it unfolded. I was only brought up short by the end, when the person Kristy is talking to is revealed, in a wonderfully bittersweet moment. It was unexpected, but not off-putting, and somehow, makes the whole story even more poignant. A beautiful fic by someone who proclaims she's no good at writing fanfic (don't believe her :P)

Read something good lately? Hit me up with a link!!

Hey! You are/were a fan of Scrubs! Just read your lost in translation series! Brilliant stuff!!!

Scrubs are my OTP of all time, so it's nice to see them through your eyes, ha, I read all of YanksLuver fic that she posted on a message board devoted to the pairing. Great recs, I absolutely agree!

[identity profile] lapiccolina.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Do you follow Kimberly as well? I so adore their friendship/relationship. Kimberly's YouTube videos kill me every time.

JT was FABULOUS in the aftermath of her death. I cried every time. It's feels so breathtakingly real. You feel the grief jump out of the screen.

You know she's written more stories right? She tends to pop back up on The Scrubs board now and then with some new stuff. Not lately though. She's great. Plus, there are other fabulous writers as well with such epically good fic.

P.S. Just wanted to let you know I devoured and read all your Charlie/Janine BSB fic on the babysitters lj and left you comments! Also read your Charlie/Janine fic res! Love. Needs to have more fic! LOL.

Ah yes. Kristen did say lately she misses Kim and Jason! Awwww.

Lol about taste. If you want the link whenever you have a taste for scrubscentric GH fic, let me know! :)

I eagerly await your future Janine/Charlie GH fic!

Yep, he got nominated, but as for material this year? I just don't think he'll win. Next year, he better get nominated. His portrayal after robin's death is phenomenal. That's Emmy winning stuff right there.

The fic archive I wanna link you to requires you to be a member of the board. Do you even want to join a message board?
