Count Me In | Series Index

The master index for my 'Count Me In' series. As I'm writing it in a very non-linear fashion, if you'd like to enjoy the story in order, here's the place to do it.

Summary: Exactly what it says on the tin: a post-canon BSC headcanon in which Charlie Thomas and Janine Kishi discover each other, become great friends, and fall in love. The namesake of this series is the 1966 song by Gary Lewis & The Playboys, because I thought it rather fitting to this particular pairing:

If you need someone to count on when you’re down
And all your other friends you’ve lost, count me found
Just be sure you count on me, and when the counting’s through
Count me madly in love with you…

Writing for [personal profile] mkrobinson for the 2017 [community profile] hetswap exchange.

I don't know if I fooled anyone by stepping so far out of my comfort zone, but I did receive some lovely comments for this fic before author reveals, and I saw at least one rec, which made me happy ♥ I'm definitely looking forward to exploring this relationship more, especially from Richard's perspective.

The Best Friends You'll Ever Have | 26: Just Janine

Chapter Title: 26 | Just Janine
Prompt: #029 – Janine Kishi

Genre: Family
Rating: T
Word Count: 2,323
Summary: For a long moment, they simply regarded at each other, communicating with their eyes and hands what they couldn’t convey with words. Dear [community profile] hetswap Author...

Hello! Thank you for offering to write a fic for me! =) I am a hopeless romantic, and all of my major ships are het, so this exchange is like a dream come true, LOL. I like to think I'm easy to please, but I'll let you be the judge of that. Keep reading for my general likes/dislikes, and some prompt ideas to get your muse rolling...

The Best Friends You'll Ever Have | 25: The Final Goodbye

Chapter Title: 25 | The Final Goodbye
Prompt: #020 – Patrick Thomas
Universe: Late canon (Friends Forever #1)
Genre: Family, Drama
Rating: K+
Word Count: 1,255
Summary: Charlie Thomas makes peace with the man who abandoned him as a child.

Links: DW | LJ | AO3 | FF.net

The first of my two 2016 [community profile] fandom_stocking gifts, this one for [personal profile] ozqueen. I wrote and posted this fic before I read her letter for chocolate box this year, where she mentioned being interested in some Charlie Thomas & Patrick Thomas family dynamics, so win-win! =)

Points of interest... )

I enjoyed writing this immensely, and [personal profile] ozqueen enjoyed receiving it. I'm really happy I was able to push all the buttons for her that the book pushed in me. I have so many feels and so much sympathy for all of the Thomas brothers with this book - Charlie and Sam and poor David Michael, who feels left out but probably doesn't really understand why.

Hmm...I *do* have a David Michael prompt in my [community profile] babysitters100 table...maybe this is a way to fulfill it...

[community profile] fandom_stockings revealed!

This year's [community profile] fandom_stockings have (finally) been revealed. Mine is here - and boy was I totally spoiled this year, haha. Not only did I receive 3 wonderful giftfics, but I also received recs for nail polish tutorials (yes!), a clutch of Clarissa-centric blog recs (Yes!), and icons from fellow fans of Jonathan Creek and Monarch of the Glen (YES!). I enjoy meeting new people who share my interests, so yays all around!

I ♥ this exchange because its the time when I'm mostly likely to receive things for the tiny fandoms of my heart, alongside the bigger fandoms of my heart, like BSC.

As per usual, I will post recs/author's notes for the few giftfics I gave this year in the coming weeks.

That being said, this is likely the last year I'm going to participate in [community profile] fandom_stocking, because the exchange is very poorly organized. It has single-handedly fueled my muses during the Christmas/holiday period for the last couple of years, but participating has become such a hassle that it'd be easier/more satisfying to gift things to the same folks, outside of the exchange.

Speaking of which - the [community profile] hetswap tagset looks very promising for this year, with multiple pairings from all of my major fandoms (including Inuyasha, BSC, and Sweet Valley) having been nominated quite early in the game. I nominated some things myself, but I was tickled to see so much possibility already there. There seems to have been something of a resurgence in desire to see IY canon pairings, especially - I'd love to see some of my IY fandom friends participate, just to be able to read new works by them (HINT HINT).

Baby-sitters Club | Count Me In: Confession & Plea

Title: Confession & Plea
Genre: Romance
Rating: T
Word Count: 1,896
Summary: After a year of intermittent dating, Charlie and Janine find themselves at a crossroads.

Links: DW | AO3

This is how you kick off a shiny brand new year: with OTP fic! ♥

Points of interest... )

I certainly hope this isn't the last time I visit this particular series this year, but I have learned better than to make promises that time and circumstance force me to break. Considering my [community profile] fandom_stocking pieces with these two are leading me into a completely different, separate universe from this one, I definitely forsee myself spending a lot of time with these characters, in one iteration or another :D

Chapter Title: 23 | Stubborn
Prompt: #058 – Grounded
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: Family
Rating: T
Word Count: 1,076
Summary: There was nothing worse than watching her fear become realized – she’d clutched his hands then much like she was now, as if he was her lifeline as she dangled over the side of some perilous cliff.

Written for the “fluffy” prompt on my 2016 Summer Mini Challenge table.

This was fun to write, and it came out more or less in one piece - a plus when writing against a deadline, LOL. It was refreshing to write this pairing again, and sort of whetted my appetite for more. And it's always a plus to knock off another [community profile] babysitters100 prompt, considering I've been working on that table for six years now o.O

Summary: Sometimes simple questions don't have simple answers.

So apparently I like to celebrate momentous occasions with sudden bursts of fic.

As with just about every other entry in this series, finishing this fic has spawned ideas for at least two more, so I'm definitely not done! Here's hoping it won't take two months to crank out the next installment *fingers crossed*

The Best Friends You'll Ever Have | 22: Of Music & Nail Polish

Chapter Title: 22 | Of Music & Nail Polish
Prompt: #097 – Nail Polish
Universe: Mid-canon
Genre: General
Rating: K+
Word Count: 1,473
Summary: Janine Kishi did not have much in common with her sister Claudia, but what they did share, she cherished.

Links: FF.net | DW | LJ | AO3

Written for [personal profile] imamaryanne, for the 2015 [community profile] fandom_stocking holiday exchange.

Points of interest... )

[personal profile] imamaryanne enjoyed the fic, for which I'm very happy - this isn't exactly my comfort zone when it comes to BSC fic, but it was fun to explore their sibling relationship and capture a moment in time when they were closer to each other than further apart. Janine already craves those sorts of moments, and I think as she grows up, Claudia will come to appreciate them, too.

The Best Friends You'll Ever Have | 21: Ante Up

Chapter Title: 21 | Ante Up
Prompt: #085 – Move
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: Comedy
Rating: T
Word Count: 700
Summary: Sam challenges his siblings – and Stacey – to a friendly game of cards.

Links: FF.net | DW | LJ | AO3

Written for [personal profile] ozqueen, for the 2015 [community profile] fandom_stocking holiday exchange.

Points of interest... )

To my great relief, [personal profile] ozqueen really enjoyed this, so yay! I am always a bit doubtful that my sense of humor translates well into the page. I was also a bit nervous about just putting a shortfic out there and letting it flail on its own merits. (700 words may not be "short," per se, but compared to my usual fare it certainly is!) I will definitely try this again as I continue on with my [community profile] babysitters100 table. There are some prompts I'm still staring at six years later with no idea how I'm going to fulfill them...

Chapter Title: 20 | Cavorting with the Enemy
Prompt: #087 – Join
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: Friendship/Romance
Rating: T
Word Count: 3,519
Summary: Charlie nodded, and grinned, and was unable to stop himself from laughing at her astonished expression. “What’s the matter, Janine?” he joked. “Can’t handle a bit of friendly competition?”

This fic basically opened the floodgates of my own personal headcanon for these two, which I've been inspired to serialize. Much as with Allegiance, this is going to be a non-linear post-canon continuum, so if you'd like to read it in order, check out my series index on DW or the series page on AO3.

The Best Friends You'll Ever Have | 19: En pointe

Chapter Title: 19 | En pointe
Prompt: #066 – Ballet
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: General
Rating: K+
Word Count: 1,980
Summary: Claudia designs the costume for Jessi’s senior dance recital.

Links: FF.net | DW | LJ | AO3

Written for [personal profile] lionessvalenti, for the 2015 [community profile] fandom_stocking holiday exchange. This was her request for the BSC fandom:

BSC: Any of the baby-sitters, including Abby and Shannon. Cary Retlin, Laine Cummings, Sunny Winslow, Ducky McCrae, Amalia Vargas, Pete Black, Alan Gray. High school fics are my favorite. College/middle school are okay. Adult/families of their own type future fics don't interest me. I love friendship fics for the baby-sitters, especially outside of the "best friends" combinations they have set up. I love seeing the girls interact with characters outside the club.

Hmm. I was pretty sure I could work with that.

Points of interest... )

[personal profile] lionessvalenti enjoyed this fic, as well as others from [community profile] fandom_stocking, which definitely made *me* feel better about writing a character I hadn't really played with in any way. This was the first of four fics I wrote for [community profile] fandom_stocking this year, and definitely the one that was the furthest out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed the experience, though, and definitely want to write more Jessi!fic. After all, I *do* have some experience writing about Juilliard, haha!! :D

THANK YOU! ♥

Thank you to everyone who was kind enough to put something in my fandom stocking. I never know what to expect, but I am never disappointed. I feel like I win every single year, LOL - even the year that I was seriously ill and had to flake on everybody I wanted to treat, I totally won :D

This year I received a little bit of everything: BSC fics, IY fics (I miss you, IY fandom!!), a Tangled fic, lots of pictures of castles and kitty cats, and even a greeting from a heretofore unknown fellow KI fan! Unfortunately, my output was not as varied - I only finished 4 BSC fics, which will at some point feature at [community profile] babysitters100. This little fic-writing spree inspired more BSC fic, as well as a character guide for Charlie Thomas, so I was definitely busy during my little week and a half of vacation :P

Quite a few of you on my f-list treated me, and I tried to do the same. There was at least one fic that I did not have time to write before reality set in, but it will be coming at some point this year. If you had a fandom stocking, I hope you enjoy your gifts as much as I love mine!!

California Diaries | Oneshot: The Freshman Essay

Title: The Freshman Essay
Fandom: California Diaries (Baby-sitters Club)
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: General
Rating: T
Word Count: 7,027
Summary: Jill Henderson reflects on her traumatic eighth grade year for the annual Freshman Essay at Vista.

Link: AO3

Written for [personal profile] isabelquinn, for the 2015 [personal profile] cadiaries_exchange.

When [personal profile] lucida posted about starting up a California Diaries fic exchange, I was pretty much all-aboard from the get-go. I, too, believe that the CA Diaries deserves more fic, especially given the rich tapestry of the canon and the new characters that were introduced for this BSC spinoff series. The hardest part for me was actually coming up with prompts about what sort of fic I'd like to see. Prompts are not my strong suit, which should be obvious from my five-prompt tables for the Summer Mini Challenge. Nevertheless, I managed to come up with the requisite amount to sign up for the exchange, and was blessed when I matched with prompts I actually felt I could write!

Jill Henderson was a character from the original BSC series, originally the fourth member of the We ♥ Kids Club along with Dawn, Sunny, and Maggie. She was summarily shunted out of the CA Diaries series to make way for Amalia and Ducky in a way that I felt was really unfair to her, so it was a pleasure to explore *her* side of the story as to why she drifted apart from her friends.

Points of interest... )

I thought the idea of writing an introspective essay would fit right in with the other unorthodox assignments Vista seems to give (the compulsory journalling, the 8th grade autobiographies). Freshman year would be the right time for it, too, even if the eighth graders had stayed in the middle school building. In the end, it was a much easier story to write than I was anticipating, and it was a real joy to get into Jill's head and look at the canon from her perspective. It's one of my favorite things I've written this year, and it makes me happy that [personal profile] isabelquinn seems to have enjoyed it, too ♥

As per usual with exchanges, mine is the longest and least popular offering of the collection, which is a bit disheartening, but oh, well. As long as the person it was intended for enjoys it, that's really all that matters!

Many thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] snarky_imp for the beta read. I don't tend to use beta readers but this was really a pleasurable experience =)
