20 Questions: Fandom ships meme
I can practically taste the next installment of Fragments, guys, but unfortunately - the muse is being a snit. All the happy currently happening IRL is srsly interfering with my ability to write angst. Hopefully, though *crosses fingers* I'll have something servicable by the end of the week.
In the meanwhile, have some thoughts on shipping. Ganked from
landofthekwt:
Fill out the ships before you look at the questions!
Eight ships you like:
01 Inuyasha/Kagome
02 Miroku/Sango
03 Naraku/Kikyo
04 Sesshoumaru/Kagome
05 Sesshoumaru/Kagura
06 InuPapa/SessMom
07 Kohaku/Rin
08 InuPapa/Izayoi
Four ships you're curious about: [This I'm interpreting as ships I'm not quite convinced of, but would read fic for if I trusted the author/person reccing said fic(s)]
09 Sesshoumaru/Rin
10 Inuyasha/Kikyo
11 Miroku/Kagome
12 Koga/Kagome
Two ships you never liked:
13 Inuyasha/Sesshoumaru
14 InuPapa/Sesshoumaru
Why do you dislike #14 so much? [InuPapa/Sess]
I don't like the yaoi ships in general in this fandom, but the two I listed are the two I absolutely, positively will not read no matter if my favorite author wrote a huge epic fic that was beloved by the rest of fandom. InuPapa/Sess is one of those ships that hits about every squick button I have, and I'd be happy to never acknowledge people write it in the first place...but I'm currently in charge of keeping up the fanfic portion of the newsletter, so I see more fucked up/cracked out pairings than anybody should have to. Thank Jeebus I don't actually have to read the fics to post them, LOL! :P
Who is someone you know that ships #9? [Sess/Rin]
Quite a bit of my f-list, actually ~ and that's what's made me relax my stance on this ship a bit. I still don't buy its intended to be a canon!ship, but that goes more towards my personal understanding of Sesshoumaru than anything else, I suppose. The fact that I get along with so many (reasonable) people who support this ship says something about all of us I think, LOL :P
What would be your ideal scenario for couple #3? [Nar/Kik]
Something dark and twisted and full of mind-fuckery. That ship is so much about crossing the line between love and hate...
paynesgrey does amazing things with them in her Nar/Kik collection. GO READ IT if you haven't!!
What interests you about #10? [Inu/Kik]
The "original" canon couple, in a sense...This relationship, in so many ways, defines who Inuyasha is in the present of the canon, that it must, at the very least, be acknowledged and respected for the part it plays in history. Kikyo is a wonderfully complex character, but I'm just not quite convinced she loved Inuyasha, so much as she saw the way she could use him as a way to escape her own troubled life.
Which is your favorite moment for couple #1? [Inu/Kag]
Mm, probably Chapter 494. Talk about ideal places for kisses!
How long have you been following couple #6? [InuPapa/SessMom]
*shrug* I don't think I've ever written them, per se, but I've been intrigued about this pairing for about as long as I've adored their progeny as my favorite character. So that's...hmm, forever :P
What's the story with #8? Why did you start shipping them? [InuPapa/Izayoi]
That ship is on the cusp for me, actually - if forced, I'd probably say I ship InuPapa/SessMom over this particular couple...but I have written a short story about InuPapa/Izayoi, and in my head, it kinda works out the same way the Sess/Kag dynamic does, only with curiosity instead of prejudice. I see young Izayoi as something of a firebrand, very passionate and curious and then tragic, struck down for a decision she made in haste and forever punished for it. That's the sort of tragic figure I enjoy exploring.
You have the power to make one ship non existent. Choose from #13 or #14: [Inu/Sess or InuPapa/Sess]
To wipe off the face of the earth? Inucest, without a doubt - brother-form, since it appears to be more rampant than father-form. Shipping characters based solely on their appearances never made sense to me o.O
Which ship do you prefer #2 or #4? [Mir/San or Sess/Kag]
D: You cannot make me choose!
:-/
I guess Sess/Kag would win out, simply because Sesshoumaru is my favorite character, and I've written far more S/K fic. But what I prefer to read, Mir/San all the way. No. Question.
What interests you about #11? [Mir/Kag]
I like them both, and think...another time, another place? It could've happened.
psyco_chick32 pretty much captured it with the fabulous gift!fic she wrote for me, Waiting With You.
Why do you like #7? [Kohaku/Rin]
It's such an sweet, shy, innocent ship :) They both went through so much in the canon story, together in some cases, and they're more age appropriate than any other Rin ship I've encountered. I prefer to think of this as her canon ship, because I enjoy their dynamic. Especially the way Langus writes it *sigh*
What’s a song that reminds you of #5? [Sess/Kagura]
“Disarm” © 1993 Smashing Pumpkins
If you could have any of these two pairings double-date, who would it be?
Mir/San and Kohaku/Rin. LOL I don't know why, but I think it'd be adorable - the older, established couple, and the newer, younger couple, sharing space and learning from each other :)
Have #2 kissed? [Mir/San]
Fuck yes!
They're the only ones with living, breathing proof of the power of a kiss, too ;)
Did #4 have a happy ending? If the show hasn't ended yet, do you think a happy ending is likely? [Sess/Kag]
LOL. It would take moving heaven and earth to part Inuyasha and Kagome after the end of the canon, and Sesshoumaru would be just as content being alone as he would be being romantically involved with any of the other characters.
What would make you start shipping #13? [Inu/Sess]
You'd have to shoot me in the head first and render me completely immune to badfic.
If only one could happen, which would you prefer, #2 or #6? [Mir/San vs InuPapa/SessMom]
Well they both happened, so we all win! :D I rather like the way things panned out in canon (Mir/San together forever, InuPapa/SessMom together and then...not?) because both offer such rich fodder for fanfic.
You have the power to decide the fate of #4. What happens to them? [Sess/Kag]
Well, pick your poison - Allegiance or Fleeting. I'm controlling their fates in two different universes :D
Which of these ships do you love the most?
Again, you can't make me choose! I'm a pretty hard canon shipper at heart, but with a twist: Sesshoumaru is my favorite character. So, while I love both Inu/Kag and Mir/San, I also enjoy poking Sess with a stick and pairing him with various (female) characters to see how he reacts. Since Kagome is the easiest one of the bunch to manipulate, she's his current foil, but I'm by no means rabid. (And apparently I write S/K "wrong," anyway.)
But, I'd have to say, I like anything that could have a canon backing to it, given a good writer is leading the way. Pretty much the only thing I rule out automatically is incest pairings (and yaoi, for this fandom - but then, with few exceptions, yaoi in this fandom couldn't be supported by the canon story anyway).

Dingdingdingding! I just can't do it!
This relationship, in so many ways, defines who Inuyasha is in the present of the canon, that it must, at the very least, be acknowledged and respected for the part it plays in history.
I think this is a really good description of Inu/Kik. It's canon-ish but not quite, by my way of thinking... and it's got its place in the story.
*blushblush* I'm still blown away by the response to Waiting With You. (Between you and kwt, I'm kinda blinking over here! I didn't expect to be mentioned as examples!!)

Hmmm maybe.
*facepalm* I should've done that - it was a real stretch, reaching for ships I actually read/support in this fandom. Oh, well - there are plenty I don't like to make up for it, LOL! ;)
LAWLS! Who knew good moods could actually stand in the way of positivity? ^_^ *lays out muse-bait*
ZOMG. Of all the FREAKING TIMES to be happy, this is not it, fic-wise. Repercussions of sex in Fragments, and a long exposition of Sesshoumaru's hatred for his brother due for Fleeting?! Ugh, somebody shoot me now, I need to be angry to pull this stuff off!!
And its not like I'm lacking for fluffy ideas, either, but damn. Nothing's quite flowing correctly, and it is very frustrating.
I just can't do it!
I think you might have to kill me before I'd read Inucest of any form. I...just...no. I don't care how good it is, I have to at least buy the pairing I'm reading. And that's never going to happen here.
I think this is a really good description of Inu/Kik. It's canon-ish but not quite, by my way of thinking... and it's got its place in the story.
It certainly plays its own part, and I think it is just as valid as the Inu/Kag ship - but for me, its not about love and romance so much as need and desperation. It just doesn't appeal to me on the same level as Inu/Kag does.
*blushblush* I'm still blown away by the response to Waiting With You. (Between you and kwt, I'm kinda blinking over here! I didn't expect to be mentioned as examples!!)
:) You knocked it out of the park with that fic, what can I say? Its certainly one of the better examples of that pairing I've read.
no subject
I’ve started to try out other pairings especially Sess / older Rin. I know this is a hated paring but I could really see it happening as Rin got older.

The more I think about it, the more this makes sense to me. I don't know that either Inuyasha or Kikyo were in a place that they could truly love another person, or that their relationship moved far enough over the course of time for that to ever really happen. But when I think of that ship, I think of desperation, especially on her part. I can't help but wonder, just a little, if she became more attached to him in her afterlife because of his attachment to Kagome...
no subject
"Kikyo is a wonderfully complex character, but I'm just not quite convinced she loved Inuyasha, so much as she saw the way she could use him as a way to escape her own troubled life."
I have always subscribed to the idea that Kikyou wanted Inuyasha to become human so they could marry just so she would be free of her obligation to guard the jewel and could walk away from being a priestess and instead be an ordinary woman. He came into her life at the "right place, right time" and served a purpose for her. I laugh every time I think about what the hell she would have done when she made that wish and the jewel didn't disappear. Then Inuyasha would have been stuck as a human and she'd still have been obligated to guard the jewel. Takahashi even said that Kikyou did not love Inuyasha yet before she died.
"I can't help but wonder, just a little, if she became more attached to him in her afterlife because of his attachment to Kagome..."
Rivalry makes the heart grow fonder. LOL! And ... regarding her redemption into a warm, loving human being when she the walking dead, my personal belief about that is that it was the piece of Kagome's soul she retained that held those feelings. Kikyou and Midoriko were both determined to use Kohaku's shard to defeat Naraku. Kagome would never have even considered it. I believe Kagome's heart won and stayed Kikyou's hand. But that's just my take on it. ^_~ Of course, even when she finally died again, she never said she loved Inuyasha--she was content that he was there for her because that is what she always wanted from him: for him to be there at her convenience. Her joy was at finally being "an ordinary woman."

(yeah, I'm one of those crazy seldom watch TV or read continuing story type people. Even though I have an academic background in English lit, I also have a background in history, and most of my personal library is history, various books on social sciences and cultural references and DIY books. Ever since hard SF got supplanted by fantasy, even my novel reading has just about stopped. Thus is life. Once upon a time, I used to read a novel a day.)

I don't think I have enough IY-fandom ships to do this. Now if you reversed it, so I only had to pick 2 that I liked, 4 I was "curious" about, and 8 I never liked, then I could probably do it. LOL

LOL I feel your pain - I'm going to do it but I may have to rely on some MMPR-ships.

No kidding - #12 got lost in the shuffle completely o.O And since I listed them more or less in order of my preference, I didn't get to go into great detail about why I liked all the ones I liked, or even why I was intrigued by the ones I was intrigued. The only thing I felt I did get to do was have my hate-on for those ships I despise :P

It does, but I'm willing to read a few, select pieces of it. I have too many good S/R writers on my f-list not to. It has to be Sess/older!Rin, though - lolicon will send me running in the opposite direction o.O
I know you like Kohaku/Rin. I just think that Kohaku has issues that he will never get past.
*snork* And you think Sesshoumaru doesn't?! I mean, let's be real here...if we wanna go toe to toe on issues, I think they're rather evenly matched!
no subject
Inu/Kik though. Personally, I do think she loved him, but circumstances definitely got in the way. Kikyou is very honor- and duty-bound, and because of her role as a miko and protector of the Shikon no Tama, extremely revered. As long as the Shikon no Tama was around, it HAD to be her first priority, not Inuyasha. A lot of people take Kikyou's idea that Inuyasha could wish to be human and thus purify the jewel as a sign that she didn't accept him as a hanyou; I think it's more likely that she recognized the jewel as the main blockade to their potential future, and thought that a wish with pure motives might be enough to purify it out of existence. I dunno. Rambling now. ;D
ALSO: Mir/San, Rin/Koh double-date? I totally agree. The idea itself is so cute and sweet, I think I just gave myself a cavity thinking of it.
But what I prefer to read, Mir/San all the way. No. Question.
And by the way, that made me smile. A lot. Mir/San = where the goodfic's at!
no subject
If the rest of my f-list is anything to go by, you'll be hard pressed not to sample one of the fics I write for that pairing :P LOL, they swear I have the power to convert! IDK - I just think I have the ability to keep them in character *and* tell a good story at the same time :P
Personally, I do think she loved him, but circumstances definitely got in the way.
I agree with your assessment of her duty and honor, and I don't think she wanted to purify Inuyasha because she didn't accept him as he currently was. She saw his purification as the answer to both of their problems. But I don't know how convinced I am that she was with him because she loved him, and not because she saw him as the chance to escape all of those duties and the horror of being a glorified demon slayer.
What can I say - the coldness of her personality doesn't appeal to me the same way Sesshoumaru does. *shrug*
ALSO: Mir/San, Rin/Koh double-date? I totally agree. The idea itself is so cute and sweet, I think I just gave myself a cavity thinking of it.
:D :D :D I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks its too adorable for words. ZOMG the fluff would eat me alive!
And by the way, that made me smile. A lot. Mir/San = where the goodfic's at!
Well, it certainly isn't Sess/Kag - I say that without qualification. I won't read any new S/K that either 1) doesn't come from an author I trust to write them without massacring any characters or canon along the way, or 2) isn't recc'ed to all hell by some of those people that fall into category 1. There is SO much shitfic out there.
But Mir/San? By comparison, everything comes up roses. I'm so glad to see a little boom in this ship, too, of late! Hooray goodfic! :D
no subject
Well, if I ever come across the temptation to read them, you'll be the first person I turn to. As of now, it's not so much a pairing that grosses me out or anything... It just doesn't interest me. *shrugs* :) I guess only time will tell!
But I don't know how convinced I am that she was with him because she loved him, and not because she saw him as the chance to escape all of those duties and the horror of being a glorified demon slayer.
*grins* I like this. You're totally tempting me to go back to canon and start digging stuff up. Except that will lead to bunnies... *flails at you a little*
:D :D :D I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks its too adorable for words. ZOMG the fluff would eat me alive!
Omigosh, I know. Corisu Li once wrote a fluffy little AU oneshot for those two... man, the subtle jibes from Miroku are fantastic in it. Just thinking about this concept makes me want to write... *eyes the current
There is SO much shitfic out there.
Yeahhhh. Well, the Inuyasha fandom isn't so much known for it's prevalent goodfic. But - the few, the strong, the proud... They're out there!
I'm so glad to see a little boom in this ship, too, of late!
I know! It's exciting to come back to. And I'm doing my part to drag people back with me... :D The week after Christmas is going to be fabulous though...
no subject
I understand ;) And my fics will always be out there, so *shrug*
It just tickles me how many people on my f-list loathe S/K fic...except for mine. Makes me feel better about the fact that S/K fandom hates my stuff so much, LOL!!
*grins* I like this. You're totally tempting me to go back to canon and start digging stuff up. Except that will lead to bunnies... *flails at you a little*

Ooh, I like the idea of subtle jibes from Miroku!! I can has link maybe? *hopeful*
As for the last - hooray! :D I suck at writing shortfic, which is why I haven't written for a lot of my own themes *facepalm* But I think the quality coming out of that community is pretty amazing :)
I know! It's exciting to come back to. And I'm doing my part to drag people back with me... :D The week after Christmas is going to be fabulous though...
I've seen the signups for Mirosanta...and I am intimidated. So many people hate AU! O.O LOL I have no idea what sort of rabbit I'mma have to pull out of my hat for that.

As for linkage... My phone makes it a bit complicated for direct linkage, but here`s her profile. It`s the fic called Skates.
And it`s definitely a good comm! It`s just troublesome, because I have so many different ideas, I don`t know where to start!
As for the MiroSanta... Uh, I`m sure you`ll do fine! It`ll be a good stretch at least, if you do get one of the canon-only requesters? :) Besides, you`ve gotta start sometime, somewhere!

I'm an idiot for a challenge :D

Thankies! :D

LOL, as I've said elsewhere...first world problems ;) The kind that are nice to have for a change!

LOL, bring it on! I love a challenge, and this is pretty much my #1 holiday project this year, so I'm game as long as my muse is. *beats back S/K holiday fic idea*
no subject
Indeed. It`s better than the opposite problem: no ideas at all. Even so, it`d be nice if the bunnies would just be polite and orderly and did what I wanted them to...
Alright! You asked for it! *considers which request is the hardest and most challenge-worthy for you* =P
no subject
o.O Uh, hmm. That might require more thought on my part than is strictly necessary. Why don't you just start here? Allegiance and Fleeting are the names of my serials/WIPs, but anything else with that tag should be standalone.
*thinks*
Actually - start here. These are friendship fics. They might be more palpable for a beginner, haha ;) The one of those where I think I write the best Sess is here. (You're going to have to join the community to see that fic BTW.)
Alright! You asked for it! *considers which request is the hardest and most challenge-worthy for you* =P
Well, shit - me and my big mouth, LOL!!

Starting me off slow, huh? :) Probably a wise idea for my canon loving self!
me and my big mouth, LOL!!
Haha, well, lucky for you, I'll be assigning by draw of the hat. So if you do end up getting a tough one, blame your own luck!

LOL! Wow, I didn't realize so many people shared my deep thoughts on shipping :P
But SO THERE with you on the Inucest stuff. WTF is up with that? That's not just gross, it's also not sexy. It is the opposite of sexy. There are so many pretty men to write about if you're into yaoi - choose two that AREN'T RELATED. *sigh*
NO FREAKING KIDDING O.O And some people tell me they enjoy Inucest because they like the way said authors handle the psychology of the brothers...which, granted, is perfectly reasonable - I'm sure its interesting stuff, LOL. But all that makes me want to do is analyze the person *writing* the fic, you know what I mean? Sometimes it comes down to those thoughts instead of the ones being projected onto the characters...

Hehe. Well, great minds and all... ;)
But all that makes me want to do is analyze the person *writing* the fic, you know what I mean?
Yes, exactly. Like rape fic where the victim falls for the attacker (noooo, I'm not thinking of any fic in particular here - of course not!) - what is going on in their brains? There are lots of books out there that go into the whole "we're so wrong for each other that it's right" kind of analysis. "Summer of My German Soldier" for some reason pops into mind - the Jewish girl falling for the older German POW. But the point of that book (and others in that category) is that they really *aren't* different. But that's not the issue here. Incest isn't just wrong because it gives us the squicks - it's *biologically* wrong. There's a reason hemophilia and a host of other diseases ran in several royal bloodlines - because they kept marrying their own cousins.
All I'm saying is that can't we explore the psychology of the two brothers (or father and son) without getting into the sex bit? Can't they just become friends? Isn't that even harder to do? And require more thought?
... Erm. Sorry. You get the point. LoL. Seriously though - MAJOR SQUICK.

*facepalm* But of course! And I only have the best f-list in the history of f-lists, so I walk among pretty tall company! :P

Well, see, I think its that last part that's the problem - when there's more contemplation beyond "OMG THEY ARE TEH PRETTEH THEY BELONG TOGETHER" the train of thought begins to break down, LOL. I'm sure there are yaoi writers out there who do these two justice, but its not an any form I'd recognize. *shakes head*
And the thing of it is, I like the dynamics of the brother relationship - its part of what makes them so much fun (and so damn hard to write, grrr). Its just...I feel confident in saying that sexual attraction will never, ever be an issue for them. Just - no.

I love Kohaku/Rin! I actually think that was the direction RT was going in. They had some contact during the canon story and I think Sesshoumaru gave Kohaku his approval by sheltering him for a while. I also think he would approve of Kohaku going out and establishing himself before he comes back to Rin. The idea of them double-dating with Miroku and Sango is priceless. ^_^
I'm not a yaoi fan. Period. Inucest = double ick. I still shake my head at the fact that I wrote that short Sess/Inu piece even though I was completely poking fun of them as a couple. Hehheh!

Have you read this one? Because its pretty decidedly not awful. :D
He's such a doofus, and I enjoy writing him as the foil to my S/K ship instead of Inuyasha, but I'm not quite convinced it could work out. It seems so one-sided.

So do I, but I think we're outvoted by all the others who see the ending as Sess/Rin. *shrug* Oh, well.

And yours is the only Inu/Sess piece I've ever tried to read, and I don't think I made it all the way through. Parody or no, it still made me go O.O

I quite agree that it was entirely one-sided and really, you've got to get Inuyasha out of the way for it to work. I'm actually fond of the backstory I have for them in BWM, and may have to write it up as a separate story sometime. (As if I don't have enough stories tugging on me at the moment. LOL!)

Hehheh! Different interpretations are what fuels fanfiction, so it's all good.

And you are one brave lady to have even attempted it. LOL! I'll confess I have read pieces with pairings I can't stand simply because a friend wrote it, but I always regret it because they depress me and mess up my writing mojo. So believe me when I say, it's always better to just give them a pass. I honestly never expect any of you guys to read my stuff.

I really did struggle to get 8 pairings together, however. In the end I had to throw in two Inu no Taisho and one unrequited pairing just to get past 5.
Never mind, it was fun to do. :)
