Aaaaand the pendulum swings from hardcore angst to teeth-rotting fluff o.O This is going to be one, uh, tricky muse to contain, it appears.
This story is based completely on book #6 of the regular series, Kristy's Big Day. Her mother is finally marrying Watson, her boyfriend, and Kristy and her brothers are all excited to be in the wedding. However - four days after they make their plans for an autumn ceremony, all hell breaks loose, and the entire shindig has to be moved up two months and more or less completely planned on the fly. Some of Kristy's family (and Watson's friends) come in a week before the new date to help set everything up at the Brewer mansion, leaving Kristy and the rest of the BSC to care for fourteen children during the day at the Thomas house. Her older brothers, Charlie and Sam, conveniently make themselves scarce while the day camp/play group is going on, but everyone reconvenes at the wedding and a good time is had by all.
I am a big believer in the Sam Thomas/Stacey McGill ship, as (with a lot of my ships, actually) it's one of the first mentioned in canon. Stacey has a big ol' crush on Kristy's older brother, but it kinda fizzles to nothing until it suddenly reappears out of nowhere in mid-canon. I love and relish the books that give us some clue about it (other than the last one, where Stacey makes a fool of herself and breaks up with Sam), so it was rather inevitable that at least some of the short work to come out of this prompt table would be for them.
This piece is set during the wedding, and it incorporates a lot of things that were hinted at in the book:
-- Sam eating olives compulsively
-- Sam's summer job working for the A&P delivering groceries (a major throwback to Ann's past, because I dunno that grocery delivery was all that common in late 80s Connecticut suburbia)
-- Sam & Charlie not showing up at their own house until five minutes after everyone else (the kids and the baby-sitters) leaves
-- Aunt Theo's bland "My, how you've grown! What grade are you in?" cornering question
-- Stacey taking lots of pictures at the wedding
I hemmed and hawwed about how I wanted to write this - first from Sam's POV, then Stacey's, then Sam again *facepalm* After telling myself I was taking this far too seriously :P I decided to do a sorta limited third person omni, with Sam as the focus. One of the problems he always had with dating Stacey was their difference in ages. It's only two years (13 and 15), but considering she's in 8th grade and thus, still at the middle school, while he's a bigshot sophomore at the high school - it's a pretty tricky situation. Sam takes some ribbing later in the series for being a "cradle robber" and such from his friends, so yeah. Typical teenage boy stuff *eyeroll*
The Thomas brothers are two of my favorite periphery characters, mostly because of their backstory. I suspect more of my stuff will involve or maybe even revolve around them, we'll just have to see. Each of them have their own prompt in my table, so they're guaranteed to get *some* love :P
My muses are kinda warring between ideas for this prompt table and my Charlie/Janine fic. I'm trying to work out a deal with them - 1 chapter of the fic in exchange for 1 oneshot - so hopefully I can spend the next couple of days finishing up the longer fic. I'm just about halfway finished with it. I'm quite excited about it, so as long as everything else in my life is fairly calm and quiet, I should be able to get this done soon *crosses fingers*
Also, be on the lookout for a BSC fic rec post sometime in the near future. Even if I don't read a lot of the slash, there's still plenty of good stuff that deserves recognition =)
