Day 20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
Rarely. If it happens, it's usually with art, instead of fic. I don't usually follow those ideas through, because it can be a tricky area to navigate (and some people are very possessive of their ideas/stories/characterizations) and really, I'd just rather not invite more wank to the party o.O
I have written a couple of 'inspired by' pieces, though, way back in 2009 - "Temptation", based on an Inu no Taisho/Izayoi scene in YoukaiYume's Raindrops doujinshi; and "Fade to Black", based on Lady Shieru's SesshKag – Lovers. Both times I was very obvious about giving credit to the inspiration piece in every place I posted it (so as to head off any accusations of stealing ideas). I also sent Lady Shieru a note on dA about it to give her a head's up, and was flattered when she said she liked it...but I know such a response is quite rare.
Usually reading others' fanfic inspires me to delve into the canon or the characters instead of working in the same universe as the author (see: most of
paynesgrey's Heroes work, and
gloriafan's non-Ryan/Stacy KI stories). They pique my interest in characters beyond those I'm most naturally drawn to. Only once have I read a story that I thought, "OMG, I want to write the sequel to this!" It was
ozqueen's "Ocean", the story of how John and Dee Pike first met, and why Sea City is their vacation spot =) I don't know if my little nibble of an idea will ever come to fruition; the only reason I'm even mentioning it here is because she gave me her blessing to write it.
