Inuyasha: The Final Act | 11 - Kanna's Gravestone
Hmm. The new anime switching to Monday evenings is full of fail...
Anyway, I'm finally getting the chance to watch the new episode - and, well, it was equal parts impressive and "meh."
You have to admit, RT, started getting more creative with the deaths of her demons as the manga went on. The idea of Kanna taking all of the hits for her mirror monster, to allow it to continue fighting with the stolen power of Tessaiga, was a great twist. Naraku knew the Inutachi would be loathe to kill her, no matter what their desire to do away with her ultimate incarnation, and it was one of his better emotional manipulations to pit them against each other.
This episode was very much about Inuyasha's connection to Tessaiga. He transformed because of the call of the stolen energy, but he was sentient during the encounter (which is interesting, considering he loses it again during the final battle...you'd think going through this - and what's to come, the battles against Tenseiga - would've made their bond unbreakable). He continues to fight with the monster, against his own attacks, even as he and Kagome urge Kanna to stop. The interesting thing is, of course, that Kanna is a void - she feels nothing.
Or does she? It can't be a coincidence that we see a replay of her laying Kagura to rest - not to mention, her last thoughts are of her free-spirited older sister. And yet, she continues, allowing Inuyasha to destroy her with each swing of his sword, until finally, he strikes the phantom Tessaiga and regains his powers.
The entire time, we're given color commentary by Byakuya, and he is quite sardonic - I can see why a cult following developed around him :P He sees what Naraku is willing to do to his incarnations, and files that information away for future use. The only thing that bugs me about him is that he's basically a replacement for Kagura, and was that really necessary? *shrug*
The animation of this episode was a bit uneven, IMO. There were some comical moments (which weren't intended to be funny), like Inuyasha being stopped dead in his tracks, on several occasions, while swinging wildly at the mirror monster. And yet, the final blow which destroys the monster - and when Inuyasha picks up Kanna's mirror after she's destroyed - are amazing.
I also liked the small scene with Kagome, where she realizes that Kanna holds the key to defeating Naraku and cries the mirror shard from her eye. She's really starting to come into her own, which makes me wonder how much impact the hitomiko arc will have on her.
All in all, it was a rather enjoyable episode :) I'm surprised the whole episode was devoted to her death, but once again, the final scenes were really nicely done!
Of course, because this arc got an entire episode to itself, that means the big Mir/San arcs are going to be condensed into one episode. That sucks BIG TIME, even though I was sorta expecting it after reading the list of episode titles. ARGH, will they always get shafted like this?! >:( FAIL, Sunrise - you are full of FAIL for that decision...
