About the only thing this Todd has going for him is the fact that he looks like he might actually be about 16

This is true. Everyone else looks about 30. I agree, no way Jess would go for this version of Todd (or any version - IIRC, she was trying to get Todd from the start because he was popular, not because she had any actual personal interest in him, like Liz did).

I was gonna say stepback Sam isn't actually terrible (he's not) but he just doesn't look like Sam to me and then I remembered that in my head, Sam's always kind of been hard for me to fully conjur a mental picture. Like I get essence of Sam (that sounds gross, oops) but not a clear mental picture...

Agreed. I didn't realize he was on the cover of #82 so I genuinely thought this was the only picture of him, and he is consistently described as being blond, at the very least (which stepback!Sam definitely is not). It's kinda amazing how, without a cover picture, it can be hard to picture these characters. Is Winston on any classic SVH covers? I think he's the only (main) side character who may be the exception. Of course, he was also represented on the TV show, which helps.

today's conspiracy theory is that they offed Sam to keep Sam and Jess from having sex, especially given how often those two are at the beyond hot and heavy, gotta have a crowd around so they don't go too far point.

I'd buy this conspiracy theory. When I was looking up Sam covers on the internet, I came across someone's old recaps/posts of the books, and apparently in an earlier book, Sam and Jess decided to be "just friends" because they couldn't keep their hands off each other. So yeah, this is one way to forego the cliche Prom Night Ending. Though considering how badly Jess treats him in pursuit of the Prom Queen title, I can't believe Sam would be ready to sleep with her anyway.
