Monarch of the Glen | Paper Hearts (Author's Notes, Part 5)

Title: Paper Hearts
Fandom: Monarch of the Glen
Universe: Canon (Series 3)
Genre: Drama, Romance
Rating: M
Rating: Language, innuendo
Word Count: 9,455
Summary: Series 3. They could never quite get their timing right…until they did. Four times when Archie shouldn’t have kissed Lexie (but did), and one time when he very definitely should have – and did.

And finally, we make it to the end ♥ So, do four wrongs really make a right?

If you read this story, I hope you enjoy it. It was a labor of love, but it was also a lot of fun ♥ I'm not done with these characters, but I am pretty satisfied that I laid out my headcanon in a way that others may find appealing.

The easiest way to summarize this purpose of this story is to say "there wasn't enough kissing, so I added more kissing" :P

Series 3 contains the courtship between what is eventually the canon pairing, that of Archie and Lexie, but you wouldn't really know that just by watching it. I've actually watched it several times, and realized that, indeed, the problem is that there is no kissing, or any other convincing physical evidence that they are anywhere near a marriage proposal until it quite literally happens. And, though it was written that way for a reason (to capture a Cinderella aesthetic), it is ultimately disappointing, especially when you consider that these two characters had a major makeout session in Series 1 and a pretty hot kiss in Series 2. Series 3 was an exercise in wasted chemistry, and a frustrating one at that.

It took several rewatches of S3 to convince myself that it was worth keeping in my headcanon, and it was when I found the small moments that I realized just how valuable it is. It truly is those fleeting moments where their bond strengthens and deepens - the lingering looks and hugs and kisses on the cheek; the stark, high-stakes conversations they have about the future of the estate, as well as themselves.

Mix that sort of emotional bonding with the sizzling physical chemistry of the previous series and you have a smash hit of a ship, so that's what I did - I found those moments that would've benefited from a kiss and inserted it. Their running joke is that their timing is terrible, so that's the thread I went with, in an old-school five times fic, with four inappropriate moments and one very appropriate moment =) Because of the rich complexity of the canon, I'm breaking down my author's notes in separate posts for each scene.

Let's begin, shall we? =) )

Monarch of the Glen | Writing exercise - Lexie's proposition

In my never-ending quest to understand the characters I play with, I decided that I would use one of my Summer Mini Challenge prompts to complete a writing exercise - and, as the rules of the challenge state, post it publicly.

I wanted to explore this scene from the Monarch of the Glen canon. I wanted to do this from Archie's POV, because I just couldn't wrap my head around what he said when he rejected Lexie's advances:

Not, "I love Katrina," or indeed any mention of the word love at all...yet that's what he means. And given that when he *does* eventually confess his love to Lexie he says, "I love you, Lexie. I think I always have," I suddenly found an emotional knot that I was determined to untwist.

Here is my effort:

Is admiration the same thing as love? )

I wrote this for the prompt "bubble" in my 2015 Summer Mini Challenge table. In addition to using the scene itself, I also drew on the heaviness of this song for inspiration. It captures the sort of disbelief and perhaps hopeless hope that I think he felt when confronted with Lexie's feelings.

Though this scence was a straight-up rejection on the surface, it simultaneously deepens the pair's relationship, because Archie finally realizes just what Lexie does mean to him. I wanted it to be there, but for him to be blind to it. He calls her his "very, very best friend" - which in my book is a much stronger foundation for a romantic relationship than something rooted in passion.

Of course, the fact that he kissed Lexie more times than pretty much all of his love interests put together also probably says something about (unconscious) his feelings for her, LOL.

Written for the "cajole" prompt on my 2015 Summer Mini Challenge table.

Talk about a story that came out of nowhere - hell, even a fandom that came out of nowhere! I've been a MotG fan for a long time, but it was one of those series that I put aside and kinda forgot about until I was looking for something to marathon during my staycation this past week. I wanted something British and fun, so I pulled my DVDs off the shelf - and the rest is history...

...in that I fell for this series and these characters like a ton of fucking bricks )

I don't know if I'll finish my table this year, but I do know that I am definitely not finished with writing for this series ♥
