Day 14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
I tend to write fic that falls in the T (or PG-13) rated range most of the time. This is kind of my default setting, I guess, because I like to write about love and romance and angst and drama and stuff like that :P It's more advanced that your normal child-fare, but not anything that warrants a 16+ age rating.
I'm comfortable writing any rating of story, from the fluffiest piece of fluff to explicit sex. Usually, it depends on how familiar I am with the characters as to what sort of story I'm willing to write about them. I've mentioned before my problems with writing my childhood OTP in explicit stories; that's just me, and its my comfort zone *shrug* I certainly don't begrudge anybody else their druthers.
I've never been shocked to find myself writing a G-rated story, or even an X-rated story...what an odd question, LOL. But then, this is how I usually approach ratings: my default setting is T, and I adjust accordingly. If I'm writing something 'soft', with no language or innuendo or violence or whathaveyou, I'll drop it down to K+ (PG) or K (G). This is pretty rare; I enjoy writing UST or innuendo into my romantic stories. On the other hand, I really debate with myself about raising my rating, and how much is really necessary to earn a Y/M (R). X (NC-17) is pretty obvious to me - explicit sex (or violence, but usually I'm writing sexytimez). The hazy gray area is foreplay (amount, type, acceleration), but usually if clothes are coming off, that means it's time for the rating to edge up.
This is another place where a lot of reading helps, I think - you get a better sense of how the pros are rated (especially if you read detailed reviews), and you can adjust your expectations accordingly.
