Fandom History & Inspiration Meme - Day 14

Day 14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

I tend to write fic that falls in the T (or PG-13) rated range most of the time. This is kind of my default setting, I guess, because I like to write about love and romance and angst and drama and stuff like that :P It's more advanced that your normal child-fare, but not anything that warrants a 16+ age rating.

I'm comfortable writing any rating of story, from the fluffiest piece of fluff to explicit sex. Usually, it depends on how familiar I am with the characters as to what sort of story I'm willing to write about them. I've mentioned before my problems with writing my childhood OTP in explicit stories; that's just me, and its my comfort zone *shrug* I certainly don't begrudge anybody else their druthers.

I've never been shocked to find myself writing a G-rated story, or even an X-rated story...what an odd question, LOL. But then, this is how I usually approach ratings: my default setting is T, and I adjust accordingly. If I'm writing something 'soft', with no language or innuendo or violence or whathaveyou, I'll drop it down to K+ (PG) or K (G). This is pretty rare; I enjoy writing UST or innuendo into my romantic stories. On the other hand, I really debate with myself about raising my rating, and how much is really necessary to earn a Y/M (R). X (NC-17) is pretty obvious to me - explicit sex (or violence, but usually I'm writing sexytimez). The hazy gray area is foreplay (amount, type, acceleration), but usually if clothes are coming off, that means it's time for the rating to edge up.

This is another place where a lot of reading helps, I think - you get a better sense of how the pros are rated (especially if you read detailed reviews), and you can adjust your expectations accordingly.

Day 2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Day 3 - For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
Day 4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

Day 6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
Day 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Day 8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
Day 9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
Day 10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

Day 12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Day 16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Day 17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Day 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
Day 19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

WORD. My default is PG or PG-13. It's a good place to start I think. :)

I always struggle though, what I can and cannot post over at FFnet with mature content in it. If it's too mature and I'll get reported, that sort of thing. Sometimes I just post it and see what happens, lol.

iven how badly FF.net is moderated these days? You could probably just post it, no problem

Yeah, I sorta have been going by this thought lately.

I wish MMO wasn't so buggy and unusable now. I'm grateful for AO3. It's starting to really grow into a great archive.

As I was telling paynesgrey I am amazed that when people can do NC17 for more than one pairing. Your lemons are so good you have won awards for MS,IK and SK.

lol I'm not sure how to be surprised at the ratings of my own fics, either. It's a conscious decision and (at least for me) one that needs consideration and planning.
