Well, it looks like the story is still there ~ keep your fingers crossed!
First of all, I have to reiterate that this story makes me so freaking happy, its stupid :D And, I think with the release of this chapter, the reasons why will start to become clearer.
This chapter is from Ryan's point of view, and goes a bit further to flesh out not only his character, but the rest of the ensemble I'll be dealing with. It's been something of a struggle, trying to decide how much of everyone else I want to include here, but ultimately, one of the things that makes this show work is the fact that there is such a strong ensemble cast, and I think it'd be a real disservice to shirk them off at this point. Its my first time writing in this universe, so I want to try my hand at everyone - I can always write ship-exclusive fic later, haha.
And because I promised, here are the references back to canon from this chapter =) Enjoy!
[+] The title song was performed in the 1987 season, covered by Stacy:
[+] Devyn auditioned for the band after showing up, unannounced, during their first rehearsal with Kenny, whom they picked up off the street in the first episode of Season 5, The Pick-Ups. The song she tried out with was "Here to Stay," originally by Sister Sledge:
I tried to stay true to the choreography in this scene, though I did take the liberty of making it a bit more risque at the beginning - but the group dance described in the middle of the number is exactly as presented here.
[+] The lineup of dancers tended to change a bit more often than the lineup of the band. In Season 5, there are two new girl dancers, but the rest had been there at least one season, if not longer. Brian isn't necessarily the "lead" on the show (the dancers don't have speaking parts), but he does get a bit more visibility in this season, hence my choice of picking (on) him :P
[+] Ryan actually covered Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" (1987) and Foreigner's "Say You Will" (1988), and they constitute some of my favorite of his performances. There's a very decent chance of both numbers popping up later in this fic, so I'll keep you in suspense on that score :P
[+] Ryan joined the baseball team in the ninth episode of the fifth season, "When the Clock Strikes Twelve." This is the only mention of it ever made (unsurprisingly), and it was a surprising mention at all, considering Ryan was never portrayed as being all that interested in sports prior to Season 5.
[+] This line:
When he’d first rolled into town and rather arrogantly asked to be let into the band, she had walked right up to him while the others held back, prodding at him with curious hands, as if she’d never seen a real leather jacket or felt real spiky hair before.
is an allusion to this scene, from Ryan's first episode in 1985, "New Kid in Town."
[+] You can see Stacy playing the "communal pink guitar" in her version of "Who Will You Run To," which was a pretty good cover of the Heart song:
Note Ryan's and Stacy's positions on stage in this performance...:D
I am tentatively hoping to update this fic on a weekly basis, depending on how far ahead of schedule I can stay, so stay tuned!
