WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - An absolutely hilarious meeting between Sesshoumaru, Rin, Jaken, and Ayame from Fruits Basket. I haven't read Fruits Basket, but I do know the general story...so you know that if even I can find some humor here, it's good. Jaken's reaction = totally. priceless. TITLE - Mistaken Compassion (2006) AUTHOR - Wheezambu UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Darkfic RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 2,769 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Rin SUMMARY - I don't like romantic SessRin so I wrote it how I think it might be...realistic and in character. In truth, Sesshomaru is not that nice a guy. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Quite frankly, I agree with the author's assessment. I see the Sess/Rin relationship as one-sided at best, and this is a dark, but definitely plausible scenario if she finally managed to wear him down. Take note of the date it was written; that was before a lot of the character growth that upended the second half of the manga. TITLE - Tokyo Kid & the Demon (2007) AUTHOR - BlackMamba07 UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Drama, Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 24,231 PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - Can Kagome survive her double life? The story of an unlikely friendship, and the miracle that happened because of it. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Wow, where to begin? A high school fic that's inherently readable. Worldbuilding is pretty damn spectacular. The characters are recognizable, even in this alternate universe setting. There's a great twist, incorporating manga canon into the story. The ending is fabulous! TITLE - Clinging (2008) AUTHOR - psyco_chick32 UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Drama RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 3,465 PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - As Kagome lay dying in his arms, InuYasha realizes just how badly he needs her in his life. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A death scene that rivals even the master mangaka herself, this piece is a wonderful take on the actions - and reactions - in the face of a beloved's death. psyco_chick32 has captured all of the characterizations beautifully as she rewrites Kikyo's final death, giving it the significance it deserves for the greater story as a whole. If you like a good, angsty, sad-but-hopeful read, you'll want to read this. TITLE - But Slumber'd Here (2008) AUTHOR - the_glow_worm UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Darkfic RATING - T WORD COUNT - 289 PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - "Imagination, of course, can open any door-- turn the key and let terror walk right in." - Truman Capote WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Whoa! This piece (written for a contest) absolutely floored me. It's a great twist on the canon, and the short length only adds to the drama. TITLE - Captive Audience (2008) AUTHOR - darkfrog24 UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Comedy RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 1,266 SUMMARY - Shippo wants answers and a chance twist of fate--to say the least--gives him the chance to find them. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A hilarious little oneshot, and another great take on a contest theme. It's disgusting, but oh so funny! Be warned. TITLE - The Loyal Servant (2008) AUTHOR - Langus UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - General RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 572 SUMMARY - If you think you understand my relationship with Sesshomaru, I can tell you that you are mistaken. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - This is an original, fresh take on Sesshoumaru's relationship with his most hated sword, Tenseiga. Just brilliant! (Not to mention an excellent example of how to use a contest prompt!) TITLE - Nighttime Birds (2008) AUTHOR - katwamp UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - General RATING - T WORD COUNT - 300 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Sesshoumaru always gets what he wants. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - This is an excellent portrayal of the forbidden nature of a Sess/Kag relationship. The exchange at the end is especially good, in my opinion. TITLE - Honor Bound (2008) AUTHOR - redglade UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - General RATING - T WORD COUNT - 300 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Promises have to be kept. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A sweet story of boredom, fear, and assurance that keeps both Sesshoumaru and Kagome in character to a surprising degree for such a short piece. TITLE - Caught (2008) AUTHOR - iloveprettysilverhair UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Drama RATING - X WORD COUNT - 100 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Found in an awkward situation WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Inuyasha catches Kagome in an awkward situation. I love this author's work in general (can't get much better when it comes to Sess/Kag), and the feeling of awkwardness conveyed here in so few words is downright amazing. A very deserving contest winner! TITLE - Too Late (2008) AUTHOR - piratequeen0405 UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Drama RATING - T WORD COUNT - 100 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - In the end, neither could save her. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Talk about packing a punch in a mere 100 words - you get a little bit of everything in this one: drama, angst, remorse, anger, and absolutely exquisite imagery. TITLE - The Wish (2009) AUTHOR - pos_sess_ed UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Comedy RATING - K WORD COUNT - 300 SUMMARY - It’s a birthday party, what could go wrong? WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Inuyasha gets the ultimate revenge on his brother, through a bit of modern-day magic. This piece is hilarious, right down to the anime-mandated "OSWARI!" at the end. TITLE - Repeat After Me... (2009) AUTHOR - pos_sess_ed UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Comedy RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 300 SUMMARY - Some things don’t bear repeating. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A lovely, inventive use of the prompt word - "echo" - by a masterful comedic writer. It's something you don't see coming from the beginning of the piece...but makes perfect sense by the end. TITLE - Outside Influences (2009) AUTHOR - KnittingKnots UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Drama RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 790 PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - In the year 1561, InuYasha has to come to a hard decision. How does Kagome take it? And will she let InuYasha protect her the way he wants? WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Part of her ongoing, nonlinear, post-manga canon universe, this is the start of a small story arc, so you may need to familiarize yourself with her earlier work here first. The whole story is a wonderful bit of continuation from the manga, but this piece just feels particularly inspiring, from the interaction between Inuyasha and Kagome, to the threat of history and war, to the questions about Sesshoumaru's honor and finding safety. TITLE - Until Death (2009) AUTHOR - pos_sess_ed UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Angst RATING - T WORD COUNT - 300 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Though time is endless, it will eventually run out. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A beautiful piece, expressing how time truly waits for no man. The imagery is stark, yet powerful, leaving you breathless by the end. TITLE - Wait (2009) AUTHOR - kmoaton UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Drama RATING - T WORD COUNT - 449 PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - He had waited 500 years for her to return. He would wait as long as it took for her to come back to him. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Somehow, kmoaton manages to squeeze in the wonderful premise of her chapterfic Memories of You into less than 500 words, as she portrays Inuyasha's frustrated longing over watching Kagome grow up without him, knowing he'd have her once again but having to wait, as per his promise upon the Shikon jewel. This is a beautiful little vignette, and it was a rightful contest winner. TITLE - Midnight Bath (2009) AUTHOR - KnittingKnots UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Drama, Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 357 PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - Post Manga. Who's this taking a bath at night? And is she alone or not? Takes place about 1562 in my story timeline. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Absolutely gorgeous imagery here, as we see Kagome preparing for a sensuous midnight dip in a river (with her husband, of course :D). KnittingKnots has a way of making her descriptions sensual without being smutty, though the reader is never left in doubt of what happens when she fades to black. TITLE - Hit the Mark! (2009) AUTHOR - pos_sess_ed UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Comedy RATING - K WORD COUNT - 300 SUMMARY - Kagome learns a valuable lesson from Sesshoumaru. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Sesshuomaru attempts to show Kagome how to make proper arrows...and pays the price for meddling, LOL. A very cute interlude between these two, showcasing the differences in their personalities quite well. TITLE - Tarantella (2009) AUTHOR - dreaming_trees UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Darkfic RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 246 PAIRING - Naraku/Kagura SUMMARY - Portrait of a rape. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A dark look into Kagura's soul and miserable life, one that manages to be sympathetic and frustrating all at the same time. This is another wonderful use of a contest entry. TITLE - An Unlikely Pairing (2009) AUTHOR - paws_bells UNIVERSE - Crossover with Final Fantasy VII GENRE - Comedy RATING - T WORD COUNT - 2,990 SUMMARY - In which the disgruntled villain is being rescued by the lively, spirited heroine. Unfortunately for her, he is no Prince Charming. Unfortunately for him, she is a mouthy wench who just would not shut up. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Cracky humor at its best. Sesshoumaru is tricked into attending an anime convention as Sephiroth, and it goes about as well as one would expect. A little meta humor as well, for fans of Final Fantasy, or just for those who've attended conventions before and seen fangirls at their fangirlly best, LOL. TITLE - In the Rain (2009) AUTHOR - kmoaton UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Drama RATING - T WORD COUNT - 386 PAIRING - Miroku/Sango SUMMARY - Sango takes a good, hard look at herself - and her life - during a rainstorm. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - One of the best examples of good characterization for Sango that I've ever seen. Beautiful imagery connects her pain and tears with the falling rain. This is a chapter in the Absolution serial, but it stands alone exquisitely. TITLE - Riders on the Storm (2009) AUTHOR - landofthekwt UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Comedy RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 500 PAIRING - Miroku/Sango SUMMARY - Slayer spikes Miroku’s love life. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - You have not seen a Mir/San love story quite like this - the ultimate crack!fic, as our couple is transformed into a Harley-riding, leather-jacket-wearing, cringeworthy-line-spouting biker couple. Not meant to be taken seriously, but all in good fun nonetheless, LOL. TITLE - Concealed (2009) AUTHOR - yumi_michiyo UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - General RATING - T WORD COUNT - 323 SUMMARY - It would be better for all if some secrets couldn't be kept. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Lovely and quite en pointe explorations of the four main characters and their secrets, and why they hide what they hide. TITLE - Seasons of the Heart (2009) AUTHOR - Milareppa UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - General RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 200 SUMMARY - "I once made a promise: three branches for three sheaths..." WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - An unusual and refreshing piece of the canon story, from a very minor character's point of view. It reads as a more 'literary' piece than your standard fare, but brings a fresh perspective to a very complicated character. TITLE - Betrayed (2009) AUTHOR - silenttaiyoukai UNIVERSE - Pre-canon GENRE - Drama RATING - T WORD COUNT - 350 PAIRING - SessMom/InuPapa SUMMARY - In matters of his heart, they would never really understand each other. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - This is a really crisp, vividly imagined encounter between SessMom and Inupapa, when she first loves of his affair with Izayoi. The use of language is absolutely exquisite, painting a haunting portrait of a marriage. TITLE - Incessant (2009) AUTHOR - Milareppa UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - General RATING - T WORD COUNT - 489 SUMMARY - Four months after Naraku’s death, and while some things have changed… some things haven’t. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Now this is believable post-manga interaction between the brothers! A perfect jaunt inside Sesshoumaru's head as he deals with the everyday drudgery of life. TITLE - Home Again (2009) AUTHOR - silenttaiyoukai UNIVERSE - Pre-canon GENRE - Drama RATING - T WORD COUNT - 300 SUMMARY - The Inu no Taisho returns home after battle. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - The image of a sleepy, innocent, toddler-size Sesshoumaru makes this piece worth the price of admission :) In the context of the larger story, the scene depicted here is all the more bittersweet, which adds to the enjoyment of the piece. TITLE - One Morning's Surprise (2009) AUTHOR - KnittingKnots UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Family RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 629 SUMMARY - One morning in early April, InuYasha insists that Kagome come look at something with him. What is it, and what makes her giggle? WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Mama KK knows how to deliver the fluff, and she does so magnificently in this warm-and-fuzzy ficlet. What these two find is the only thing that was able to pull me out of a really desolate mood, so give this a read if you need to be cheered up! TITLE - Steel and Salt (2009) AUTHOR - Scribe Figaro UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 4,815 PAIRING - Miroku/Sango SUMMARY - Miroku recovers from the injuries sustained with the group in the Oni's Stomach. After awaking to Sango's vigil, the two decide to share some well-earned intimacy. Canon, or close enough to it. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Because for all I love the Mir/San corner of fandom, it seems a grand majority of the authors who currently reside here are afraid to write intimacy for this pairing. Don't get me wrong - higher rated fic doesn't automatically mean greatness...and, after all, I also write mostly T-rated fic myself - but its refreshing and exciting to see someone else's take on the sort of intense, romantic, sexual bond these two form over the course of the canon story and beyond. This piece is set around mid-manga, after the end of the first anime, and it slips into the universe so well. It's beautiful, erotic, and mature all at once, definitely a rare trifecta to find in any fandom. There's a reason we like to call Scribe Figaro the GOD OF ALL MIR/SAN FANDOM, and he just proves his worthiness with this piece =) Completed Works: Multichapter Fics Where I go when I want a great read. TITLE - Tales from the House of the Moon (2003-2006) AUTHOR - Resmiranda UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance RATING - X WORD COUNT - 343,755 (42 chapters) PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Kagome, now in college, discovers the tale of Sesshomaru and Rin. Grief can be a prison, but the bonds of love are not easily broken. What is the truth behind fairytales? ALTERNATE URL(S) - explicit version here WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Ah, ToHM: the epic fanfic that launched a thousand fanon ships. Whenever someone asks me, "what's the story that brought you into the fandom?" this is my answer. It seems strange, considering I was very much a canon shipper (and, indeed, only wrote canon fic for the first ten months of my fandom career)...but this story is so well told, even canon-pairing shippers can find something to love about it. If you ever needed to be convinced of the plausibility of this pairing, though, this story is the one that will make you a believer. Three of the four major arcs are adventure stories, where Sesshoumaru and Kagome are merely companions, trying to get through their quest without killing each other. It's the best kind of enemies-to-lovers story, because the evolution of the relationship is fully explained. My personal favorite arc is the second one, the quest to find the special medicine needed for birthing hanyou babies. The characterizaton of Sesshoumaru is beyond excellent; I think everyone who reads this story and sets out to write Sesshoumaru fanfic unconsciously carries this version of him with us, just as much as the anime and manga versions. As much as I love this fic, it is not without its issues: some chapters tend to drag under the weight of verbosity; the six month or so break taken between writing arcs is evident, because of a change in style; the last arc is very unfullfilling; the ending is bittersweet, at best. TITLE - Unleashed (2005-2006) AUTHOR - BlackMamba07 UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 131,119 (13 chapters) PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - For as long as he can remember, he has been Naraku's slave, a nameless killer, without will or mind of his own. Then one day, everything changes. He meets her... WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - If ever there was an author who could give a class on "the correct way to write an alternate universe fic," it would be BlackMamba07. The way she weaves the familiar characters into a realistic version of modern-day Japan is absolutely exquisite. If there are anomalies, they are not noticeable. The characterizations are absolutely brilliant, near flawless, here. You might raise an eyebrow when you realize half the main cast are members of the police force, but their canon personalities shine through. For an Inu/Kag writer, she does wonderful justice to Sango's character in particular, and the jocular-but-grudging sort of way she interacts with Miroku. Sesshoumaru is also particularly strong here. BlackMamba07 cleverly inserts the canon events in a way that makes absolute sense in this universe, and its all topped off by a wonderful little stylistic experiment. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll fall off your seat in disbelief at the action scenes, but you won't regret a minute you spend reading this fic. It's that good. The only real 'con' to this piece is that it goes on just a bit too long; the word count clocks in at 131,119, so you can't really read it all in one sitting (and truly absorb the subtle but wonderful bits of the story). It's worth the week of sleepless nights, however - if you like a good canon ship fic (complete with Sess/Kagura, no less!), this should be at the top of your list. TITLE - Hello Again (2004) AUTHOR - del-kaidin UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Drama, Romance RATING - X WORD COUNT - 38,299 (30 chapters) PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - Kagome struggles to raise Inu Yasha and her son. But can she get passed their three days together? Or will she even have to? WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - I actually first read this story on dA; because I wasn't a member, I couldn't read the racy chapters, LOL. But the rest of the story held up quite well, even minus the lemons. This is another great 'comfort read' for me. A believable alternate universe scenario post-manga, with most of the usual pairing suspects (Miroku/Sango, Sesshoumaru/Rin, Inuyasha/Kagome). I liked the characterization of Kagome, and the OC Kenmaru was absolutely adorable! However, I do put some serious reservations on this recommendation, if you're a technical eagle: the grammar is pretty horrid, and may be hard to ignore; the storyline is fairly simple and, by now, a complete trope. It's also quite dated, but that's to be expected considering it was written four years before the manga finished. TITLE - Golden Fire (2003-2004) AUTHOR - RosieB UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance RATING - T WORD COUNT - 53,833 (23 chapters) PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - Kagome finds out that someone wants to hurt her and her family in the modern era. Can Inuyasha get over his jealousy to help her, along with Sess, Kouga and Kikyo? WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - It was shortly after I read this story that I began to consider writing (and publishing!) my own stories. I was just enthralled with the various storylines and how well she wrote what she considered her 'weak scenes'. And - no mating bites! One of those rare ones who dare to be different, LOL :) This is another early story for a well-established writer in this fandom; interestingly enough, it was probably her last attempt at this particular pairing. This is one of the (few) stories I've enjoyed that didn't automatically pair Sesshoumaru with Rin. The characterization of their relationship as parent/child was very nice. The story is told in first-person POV, something I generally loathe, but it works here, especially for the angst of the last chapter. I *LOVED* the storyline, the original characters were pretty damn great, and the final battle had me on the edge of my seat - literally. However, there are some downsides, as with any fresh new author: there's a bit of annoying behavior (begging for reviews, etc). The storyline is a bit simplistic, not well fleshed-out in places, especially compared to later works. The epilogue is fairly cheesy, but imminently readable. TITLE - Earthshake (2008) AUTHOR - SugarRos UNIVERSE - Canon divergence GENRE - Drama, Romance RATING - T WORD COUNT - 13,973 (2 chapters) PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - Natural disasters are nothing to laugh at...and so Kagome realizes as she's trapped, hundreds of feet beneath the rubble of what was once her school, with her classmates dying one by one, and absolutely no hope of rescue. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - An interesting take on the Inuyasha/Kagome relationship, and a very emotional 'first kiss' fic. The author notes the song "Glosoli" by Sigur Ros as inspiration, and it's absolutely beautiful. TITLE - The Weight of Memories (2008) AUTHOR - minerva_one UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Drama RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 14,643 (12 chapters) PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Burdened by his past, Kagome decides to give Sesshoumaru a present to heal his broken heart. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A beautiful Christmas-themed piece, with gorgeous characterization of Sesshoumaru in particular. When Kagome finds a way to allow him to grieve Rin, she also finds a way into his heart. This is one of the few fics that also doesn't automatically demonize Inuyasha; his role is handled very well and quite positively. TITLE - A Simple Kind of Life (2008-2009) AUTHOR - iloveprettysilverhair UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Comedy, Drama, Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 30,904 (23 chapters) PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - He's strong, powerful, handsome, intelligent...and has a problem interacting with women. Hopefully Kagome will have enough patience to help. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A hilarious series of drabbles & oneshots, exploring the unlikely relationship between this unlikely pairing. They have plenty of chemistry, to go along with family drama and career ambitions! The characterizations are played mostly for comedy; do not read if you can't stand the thought of Inuyasha/Sango as a side pairing. Wonderful misdirection leads to a somewhat surprising ending, but one which is just as sweet as the first entry. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A very innovative experiment, as the author writes the story backwards, supplying the reader with the missing pieces of the puzzle and a knot of dread, as they see the outcome of the characters' actions. Recently completed and very satisfying, definitely not your typical schmoopy S/K happy-ending - you may need a Kleenex for the last installment! TITLE - Outmatched (2009) AUTHOR - piratequeen0405 UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Comedy, Drama, Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 12,936 (37 chapters) PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - Kagome has a crush on her best friend's brother. Sesshoumaru thinks dating a human might be diverting...for a short time. He may have met his match. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - The best sort of serials are the kind that aren't planned, and this is that sort of fic. Written on the basis of contest prompts at an LJ community, the story's twists and turns are delightful and all-too-realistic. This is one of the FEW Sess/Kag stories that doesn't immediately turn Inuyasha (or SessMom, for that matter) into a psychotic maniac, which is always refreshing. Wonderful, believable characterizations all around, as per usual with this author :) TITLE - Rokujou (2009) AUTHOR - yumi_michiyo UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Darkfic, Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 21,745 (6 chapters) PAIRING - Miroku/Sango SUMMARY - All he ever wanted to do was to make her happy; it was the only thing a cursed monk like himself had to offer. A short story told with six different emotions. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A lovely little series exploring the development of feelings between Miroku & Sango in the canon setting. When Miroku sees Sango suffering, he makes the ultimate sacrifice - for her, for him, for them. Saying much more would give away the ending, but make sure you have a tissue or two handy nonetheless! The author writes beautifully no matter what the situation. TITLE - The Unicorn and the Spider (2005-2009) AUTHOR - paynesgrey UNIVERSE - Various GENRE - Various RATING - Various WORD COUNT - 12,390 (30 chapters) PAIRING - Naraku/Kikyo SUMMARY - She was once a pure and holy miko, now tainted in an undead life searching for revenge. He was the one who soiled her life with hate, the reason she lost her true love. Together they would hate, desire, and long for one another. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - I've seen no one better at exploring the dynamics of the Naraku/Kikyo relationship than payesngrey. She has something for everyone in this collection - love, hate, mindfuckery, whether in the canon universe or alternate (and not just modern day universes) - with pieces that will often leave you wanting more. TITLE - A Pillow of Twisted Grass (2009) AUTHOR - Milareppa UNIVERSE - Pre-canon GENRE - Drama RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 11,921 (3 chapters) PAIRING - Miroku/Sango SUMMARY - As two children struggle with the hardships life throws their way, they have no way of knowing how the physical distance separating them hides their shared destiny. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - This is one of the most beautiful yet haunting pre-canon stories I've ever read. The author traces the childhoods of Miroku and Sango, finding and illuminating those key events which define them as characters, and shape the destinies we begin to glimpse as they're introduced into the manga. It's full of recurring motifs, drawing on the canon as well as Japanese culture, and the end result is something I'm just a sucker for learning how and why characters find each other and what ultimately brings them together. TITLE - Identity Crisis (2007-2010) AUTHOR - Griddlebone UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Drama, Romance, Mystery RATING - X WORD COUNT - 79,974 (20 chapters) PAIRING - Miroku/Sango, Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - When Sango's confidence is shaken, she struggles to find her way back to being the woman she was. ALTERNATE URL(S) - explicit version here WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - This is one of my very favorite Mir/San stories of all time - the premise is fresh, the mystery riveting, and the character growth and development is totally realistic. This could easily be a story arc within the manga itself, that's how well it fits into canon, IMO. And, well, I've never read anybody who writes Sango as well as Griddleone. Everything I know about the subject I learned from reading her work - and this, to me, is a must-read for anybody looking for a good Mir/San story. TITLE - The Ushi Oni (2010) AUTHOR - KnittingKnots UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Action/Adventure RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 11,344 (7 chapters) SUMMARY - InuYasha and Miroku head out to help a village deal with a powerful youkai that is plaguing them. Why is this time different than previous youkai exterminations and who is this boy who befriends him? Takes place Summer, 1568 in my timeline. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - Nobody captures the friendship and companionship between Inuyasha and Miroku quite like KK. This is a wonderful slice of life centering not only around an exciting youkai hunt, but also exploring the depth of friendship between the two male leads. Somehow, you just can't imagine one without the other here...:) The original character Yoshi is also quite adorable, and the right kind of OC ~ one who blends into the background seamlessly, but adds so much to the story. TITLE - Love's Smirking Revenge (2007 - 2012) AUTHOR - Langus UNIVERSE - Alternate GENRE - Drama, Romance, Mystery RATING - X WORD COUNT - 200,904 (41 chapters) PAIRING - Inuyasha/Kagome SUMMARY - Inuyasha Takahashi is a beat down detective heading the most publicized Yakuza murder investigation of the year. Kagome Higurashi is a journalist who likes a good mystery. When the two clash over the investigation will sparks fly or will they get burned? WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - I have yet to meet a fanfic writer who can write a good, solid, absolutely engaging mystery - so this story was a wonderful surprise. Written like an old-school hard-boiled detective novel, Langus sweeps us into a modern-day world while keeping the canon mythology that makes Inuyasha so interesting and complex. There are multiple storylines which weave together in compelling and sometimes surprising ways, and enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. There is also plenty of hot romance between canon pairings - so if that's your thing, then this is definitely the story for you :P Just when you think you know whodunnit, the author throws out a final shocking twist - one that reverberates through the entirety of the story, making you want to go back and read it all over again from the beginning. Another nice touch is that every character has closure, not just the main pairing - a rarity for sprawling fic with multiple story arcs. This is a definite don't miss! Commissions & Giftfics Because I have awesome friends who sometimes take commissions - and who sometimes give me gifts when I both least expect it *and* most need it :) TITLE - Emotional Babysitting (2008) AUTHOR - zangetsugirl UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Comedy RATING - T WORD COUNT - 428 SUMMARY - Kagome discovers a new "literary form" right before she goes back through the well. Uh-oh... WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - My first commissioned fic :) She calls it an old fandom cliche, I call it clever meta-writing :D TITLE - Purification (2009) AUTHOR - landofthekwt UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - General RATING - K+ WORD COUNT - 325 SUMMARY - Kikyou tries to purify herself. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - kwt knocks it out of the park when contemplating the inner turmoil of Kikyo's life after her initial encounters. with Inuyasha. Very powerful language packed into a tiny little piece. TITLE - My Sanctuary (2009) AUTHOR - Langus UNIVERSE - Post-canon GENRE - Romance RATING - Y WORD COUNT - 803 PAIRING - Sesshoumaru/Kagome SUMMARY - When the day was over and all the world’s obligations were met, they would return to this place, together, and find each other once again." Sess/Kag one-shot written as a giftfic for LuxKen27. Won 2nd place for Best One-shot in the 2009 2Q Dokuga Awards. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - It's a special sort of author indeed who can convey such intimacy and emotion without the use of dialogue. The descriptions are lush, languid, and natural. TITLE - Fat Bottomed Girls (2009) AUTHOR - landofthekwt UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Comedy RATING - T WORD COUNT - 1,003 SUMMARY - Mushin tells Miroku how his father and mother met. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - A colorful imagining of how Miroku's father chose his mother, as told through the drunken eyes of Mushin. This is a really cute piece, and at the same time, completely plausible. Basing it on a Queen song is just an extra bonus, LOL! TITLE - Waiting with You (2009) AUTHOR - psyco_chick32 UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Drama, Friendship RATING - T WORD COUNT - 3,703 SUMMARY - The battles just keep coming - along with the disappointment and climbing danger. How can the two less physical members of the InuTachi face the future without losing hope? A Mir/Kag interlude. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - I gave her the challenge, and she met it beautifully. Its the perfect mix of drama, angst, friendship, and understanding, with the smallest hint of misguided romance. A really lovely, tangible piece that hits you square in the gut every time. TITLE - Consanguinity (2009) AUTHOR - zangetsugirl UNIVERSE - Canon GENRE - Angst RATING - T WORD COUNT - 515 SUMMARY - Family. Can't live with them, can't get rid of them--even when you're handed the perfect opportunity. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - If you're a fan of Sesshoumaru, angst, or a good, introspective, sibling-rivalry fic, this is the fic for you. Miroku reflects on his wife and daughters while at the end of a bandit's blade. WHY I'M RECOMMENDING THIS PIECE - This was my gift during the Mirosanta 2009 exchange, and I couldn't have asked for anything more: drama, action, and a really great rendering of just how strong Sango is - as a mother and as a warrior.
