Chapter 556: Fate

So, just as I suspected, the newest chapter of the manga spells out the curse of the jewel, and Naraku's final wish.  On the plus side, we finally get to see Midoriko again!  And we get as close to a declaration of love from Inuyasha as we'll likely ever see!  Apparently Kagome's made her decision, has figured out what the right wish is (after that all-important chat with Grandpa in Chapter 512).

So Inuyasha battles the youkai within the jewel, and sees Midoriko for the first time since Chapter 94.  Then comes the ominous spider web and...tada!  Naraku's severed head!  Show of hands, who was surprised by this?

*crickets*

I didn't think so :)

The youkai promise Inuyasha that when Kagome gives in to the darkness and makes the wish to return home to her friends and family, her soul will be transported into the jewel, Naraku's soul will be reawakened, and they will continue the never-ending battle that keeps the Shikon No Tama alive.  Good vs Evil.

Meanwhile, Kagome is trying to figure out what she can do, to fulfill the requirements of the legend and purify the jewel out of existence.  She hits on the right idea, but just as she's about to open her mouth and make her wish, she hears Inuyasha's voice from within the jewel.  So now what?

I'm interested to see what her wish is.  I don't think it will be to see Inuyasha again (as she referenced that in her thoughts as "Kikyo's wish"), and it won't be to go home (the selfish desire the jewel craves).  So how can she wish for the jewel to be purified...unless she has to literally say that?  And if those are the magical words...what of Inuyasha's fate?  There's a mindfuck for you.

As for Inuyasha's declaration, it's quite poignant.  He's rather dense at times, but when push comes to shove, he's been known to show Kagome his actual feelings.  The spoilers for the chapter were cheesy, but the actual words and thoughts here aren't.  He appreciates everything she's done for him, and thus the desire to find her again.  He knows how important she is to his life and his own survival.  That's an understanding of love beyond he's-so-cute-I-wanna-kiss-him-hehe.  Very mature for the Inuyasha world.

Again, my story and the manga are at the same point on an emotional level, and that's pretty cool :)  Though the next chapter will be Sango/Miroku/Kohaku, Inuyasha's separation from Kagome in my fic brings out these same sorts of emotions, and their reunion will be worth all the angst I've put them through (I hope!).
