The end is near...

So, apparently the manga is coming to a rather abrupt end.  On 6/18/08, with the publication of #558, the Inuyasha fairy tale will officially be over.

I'm not sure how I feel about this; I've known for a few days and its still sinking in.  Will two chapters be enough to tie up 11 years worth of plotlines?  It all seems rather rushed...this final arc has just flown by.  I think Inuyasha/Kagome will have a proper ending to their storyline, but what of the rest of the main characters?

There is some speculation in the blogosphere that the final chapter will be 21-24 pages long, with hopes for 30 to 60.  It will have to be that long, for every storyline to have a satisfying ending.  I suppose we can only wait and see...

Perhaps I'd be more upset if I'd been in this fandom for 11 years, or even 1 whole, continuous year.  But when I got here, there were already about 500 chapters of the manga, and the anime had come and gone (along with all the movies).  So I guess my soul isn't as crushed as it could be.

This is the first time I'll be in it for the ending, though.  Most of my childhood series faded off into the distance long after I'd fallen out of interest with them.  That makes me wonder how the fandom will react; will it still be going strong, or will it eventually wither and die away?  There are still some strong stories out there, as well as gifted writers.  I know I've still got lots of plans, too...but will there be many readers out there willing to listen?
