Every Heart: Notes for Chapter 17

Yay!  The epic continues!

I'm finally beginning to draw some of the storylines together, and this is pretty exciting for me.  I've always had the hardest time when it comes to finishing my stories.  Between the other plot bunny (Nihon Idol) biting me viciously, the end of the manga, and the general tension of fandom, it's been hard to concentrate on my original work.  I think we're all teetering on the brink, trying to see just how the original will end and how much it will throw the rest of our beloved stories into total contradiction.

Basically, in this chapter, I had to explain why it took so long for the villagers of the Western lands to find the demon-slayers.  The "real" reason was because the other lines of the story had to be developed, so it was intentional, when writing Chapter 10, to have an old man as the leader of this little mission.  Do I think its realistic for westerners to spend 3 months trying to get to the east?  Japan isn't exactly a huge country, after all.  But I suppose in the era before planes, trains, and automobiles, a small group of weary travellers could spend that much time on the road if they had no sense of direction.

It is important that Kohaku be the one most gung-ho about their offer.  This is his way of seeking forgiveness in the eyes of man (one of the three entities from which he can seek pardon).  It makes sense; in his guilt-stricken mind, what better way to avenge humans than by protecting them?  It won't be so straightforward, of course, but that is his line of thinking.  The chain of protection will continue, of course:  Sango wants to protect her brother at all costs, and Miroku wants to keep her and their unborn child safe no matter what.

As for Ryutatsu -- he desires revenge against Sesshoumaru, but also against Snegura.  This will draw him back to the House of the Moon for the final battle.  So I have about half the players headed in the right direction, but there's still a few points of interest that need to be dealt with.  I was hoping to wrap this up in 20 chapters, but obviously it's going to take a bit more than that.  Hopefully my readers are still enjoying the ride, though!

Next up:  our favorite taiyoukai meets his bride, who isn't exactly what he expected.
