Holy shit...I can't believe it's been almost three weeks since my last update to this story! I hate not being able to work on my writing when I want to :-/ Well, the latest chapter is here, so here are my excessive thoughts on the matter :)

Our story is drawing to a close. I'm anticipating only two to three more chapters, so they will be pretty action-packed if everything comes out the way I want it to. This chapter was another piece of 'transition', but it contains the final reunion of comrades (Inuyasha and Kagome with Sango and Miroku in the human village of the western lands), as well as the first flirtation with the big Final Battle. Mostly, what I hoped to accomplish with this chapter was set up the final scene, when Sesshoumaru learns that his home as been attacked by the very creature he's been actively seeking during his time in Russia. It wasn't quite as "oh, shit!" as I'd hoped, but again muses can be difficult.
It was hard to figure out how to plot this chapter. I knew I wanted each of these scenes to happen; I mainly struggled with the order to put them in to have the best reveal of the plot. Originally, it was going to start with Sesshoumaru's point of view and end with those at the HotM, but I think the path I've chosen is the best.
It was important that all of our protagonists be reunited at this point, and that their mission be clear. As I was writing the first scene, I realized just how much it is true, that the demon-slayers are mostly a defensive force. Yes, they fight their battles with superior skill, but they are more mercenaries than warriors. They don't just set out and slay everything youkai that crosses their path.
The aside into Snegura's head was completely unplanned, but I thought it important for the reader to understand something of her motivations. I've tried to bring in a bit of the folk story/myth that character is based upon, and put a little feeler out for the attention this part of the storyline draws. There is a possibility of a Sesshoumaru-centric sequel to this story, but if that happens I hope I still have some fans aboard the ship. I've noticed in my stats that the Sess-heavy chapters don't get as much attention as the Inuyasha/Kagome chapters (understandable, perhaps :)). So we'll see.
Next up: the battle royale commences, with our characters plunged into immediate danger. How did Ryutatsu get there all in one piece? What kind of invading force does he have? Who's going to die? (WHUT) All thoughts for the next chapter, friends!
