IYFG 2nd Quarter 2008: Results
Short version: I didn't win. Only one of the fics I seconded won.
Long version: I didn't win, place, or show. I can't say this is a surprise; after all, I *am* fairly new to this whole business :) I'm happy my stuff is recognized, even if it isn't awarded. I won't lie; I am disappointed, but...what can you do? *shrug*
What's more amazing, at least to me, is that the stories I seconded didn't do better! I suppose I don't have my finger on the pulse of the fandom, LOL! Ah, well. I seconded (and voted) based on what I liked the best. Just for the record, here's how everything placed:
(Category - who I seconded/voted for - rank)
Best Action/Adventure - myself, Every Heart - 7/9
Best AU/AR - Langus, Love's Smirking Revenge - 11/15
Best Canon - myself, Criminal - 5/5
Best Characterization - RosieB, The Once & Future Taiyoukai - 3/10
Best Comedy - Forthright, Sesshoumaru in Seattle - 3/12
Best Crossover - Forthright, Sesshoumaru in Seattle - 1/5
Best Drama - RosieB, The Once & Future Taiyoukai - 3/11
Best Lemon - Fenikusuken, The Phoenix Blade: Time Lapse - 1/5
Best Romance, Inuyasha/Kagome - Langus, Love's Smirking Revenge - 6/8
Best Romance, Other - RosieB, The Once & Future Taiyoukai - 2/7
Best Serial - catbaker, Darkness Before Dawn - 6/12
So, one winner from my seconding list, two from my voting list, and four placements...not terribly bad, but considering last quarter there were more winners/placements, it was, overall, a bit disappointing.
As for the voting aspect - I was quite surprised to see that some of the winners didn't even hit double-digits in the polls! Very disappointing, considering the sheer size of the group. The polls averaged 62 voters (1115 across 18 polls), with the most popular categories being Best Characterization (75 votes) and Best Action/Adventure (74), and the least popular being Best Short-Short (49 votes) and Best Romance, Miroku/Sango (51 votes).
Compare this to last quarter (1st Quarter 2008), where we see these statistics: an average of 59 voters (1117 across 19 polls), the most popular category being Best AU/AR (82 votes) and Best Characterization (77 votes), and the least popular being Best Crossover (34 votes) and Best Romance, Miroku/Sango (36 votes).
It will be interesting to watch this pattern develop over the course of the year.
I wish there was a way to have more members voting, but the only way to do that would be requiring members to participate, and I see over the course of the Guild's existence, there has been talk of disbanding it because most people use it as a fanfiction recommendation list. So, it appears having a story recommended to the list is more important/impressive than actually garnering an award, because more eyes are likely to see it.
All in all, this was the first quarter I more or less fully participated in the action, so I come out of it with more interest and curiosity than anything else.
