iyissekiwa #67 | Catch (3rd Place)
Based upon: Manga chapter 292, A Special Woman
Hmm, my very first Mir/San standalone piece! I'm surprised it placed in the contest, considering it is so very, very close to the original manga.
I've been wanting to write a Mir/San piece for awhile now, even moreso after becoming involved in opening the
mirsanficart community. I enjoyed their dynamic in Every Heart, even though I didn't really feel all that confident in writing them. Because they don't have as much time in canon devoted to their relationship (or, should I say, the development of it is much more subtle), it's harder, to me, to get an accurate read on them. Both are so complex - mentally, emotionally. They've had tough lives that have shaped their experiences.
They have also been the victims of stereotypes in too much fanfiction - Miroku as the comedic hentai, Sango as a stuck-up prude who hits him for the smallest comment (or, less so, someone who spends her time angsting fruitlessly over Kohaku). But, in working on the comm's resources, I've had a chance to reread the source material, and one of my favorite moments is this one, when Miroku proposes to Sango mid-canon.
I like the emotion very much, because it represents their dynamic very nicely - it follows the battle with the salamander youkai, that had possessed the sad and lonely women of the village, who'd lost their families to the war. Sango was also bewitched, and put up a helluva fight when Miroku attempted to rescue her.
This piece is quite similar to the others I write when I'm starting with a new pairing - very close to canon, elaborating on or 'inserting' a scene. It's a relatively safe way to play with the characters, in an already established situation. What I liked about this scene - and what I wanted to highlight - was Sango's turmoil over hurting Miroku. I feel she is unnecessarily hard on herself (as a general rule...). Combine that with confusing emotions and, well, you have this little piece.
I should note that I started out wanting to rewrite the whole scene, incorporating the fact that she still uses a respectful title for him (whereas he calls her by her given name), but alas, the word count defeated me, so maybe in the future? I really enjoyed looking at this from her perspective, trying to get into her head.
That said, I do have a Ch 558 story brewing in the back of my mind, with a perfect soundtrack piece, so hopefully this won't be the last of my Mir/San experiments :)
