ebony_silks Week 79 | Womanizer (3rd Place)
Based upon: "This is the Place" (C) 2002 Red Hot Chili Peppers
This piece is so far from the original idea I started with that it's almost laughable.
I seriously struggled to come up with an idea for this prompt. Like I've said before, the
ebony_silks prompts have never really excited me, but this one? "Womanizer"?! Yeah, talk about breaking my brain! The first thing that came to mind is that awful Britney Spears song (DO. NOT. WANT.), and the second was...how could that label ever be applied to Sesshoumaru? Given my obsession with characterization, I just couldn't reconcile the two, no matter how hard I tried.
However, I did have the kernel of an idea, of Sesshoumaru as an artist and of Kagome, a starstruck fan, agreeing to model for him. Artists sometimes have needlessly scandalous reputations, and Kagome would discover that his was indeed mostly rumor - much to her disappointment. And then a surprise twist at the end...
It haunted me, but I just couldn't find the words to write it. I had one of those awful "free time but no muse cooperation" nights over the weekend, and I just wanted to trash the whole idea. *sigh* Sess as an artist is pretty intriguing, though, so maybe it will show up in another form.
I was literally struck with the idea for this piece in the middle of the night tonight. I wasn't even listening to the inspiration song, though I've been spinning RHCP pretty heavily when working on the Allegiance series (of which, I posted one yesterday). I was walking to the kitchen to wash my dishes when I was struck by a line from the song:
I don't want to do it like my daddy did / I don't want to give it to my baby's kid
...and suddenly I had this scene of Kagome and Sesshoumaru, her confronting him over his level of commitment and asking if it was because she had a kid. This is all well and good, of course, but doesn't really square with the prompt all that well, LOL. So, as I did some other things, the idea mutated in the back of my mind - Sesshoumaru comforting Kagome after she dumps her womanizing boyfriend. But who would be said boyfriend?
Blame
langus_fiction for the choice of Koga. I read her really hot Koga/Kagome oneshot this afternoon, and though he certainly is more sympathetic there, he was a better (and maybe less obvious) choice than Inuyasha. Plus, in choosing him, I had the chance to skip all those crazy family dynamics, heh.
The "Uncle Sesshoumaru" tag also came from an offhand comment I made on another oneshot, the equally awesome
knittingknots's Ambush, from her post-manga series. I don't know why I find this so amusing, other than being able to picture Sesshoumaru's expression if anybody ever tried to call him that, LOL.
This is the first time I've really utilized an OC child character, and of course, she's also based on the manga, the Soul Piper arc to be exact. I went looking through the Profiles book, since I don't have my baby names book here with me, in order to pick a name for Kagome's child. It was either Mayu or Kokichi, the name of the little boy Kagome saved in the carrion crow arc. When its a tie, simplicity wins, LOL.
And, just to bring it all home, I managed to incorporate the artist angle anyway, only it was Kagome who held the distinction. A fiery artists temper also gave me a good excuse to let her volatile emotions fly :P
I was unsure of how to categorize this fic, hence the 'general' genre tag and the obscure summary. The shift in dynamic is subtle, but the one thing that draws them together is their common interest in the little girl. I hope Sesshoumaru isn't too far out of character, but when attempting to build a world around a brief moment, sometimes the more understated aspects of character can be buried.
Hopefully, with the inclusion of this piece in my lineup, that also means the smutty fluffy muse has relinquished its hold on me for the time being. The next chapter of Fleeting will be emotionally intense, and I'm antsy to write it, but couldn't while under the influence of the smut muse. I didn't want to shortchange the development there for a cheap thrill that would ultimately change the entire course of the story...
