FF.net goes on strike & schadenfreude ensues

I can't be the only one amused by the fact that fanfiction.net goes down (or at least, their login authentication does) and LJ rant communities have a collective meltdown. Heh!

There's been a rumor (let me stress RUMOR) floating around that part of the reason for the outage is that FF.net is purging all M-rated fics. This seems unlikely to me (given the source - the Twilight IMDB board, aheh), considering the site is not in read-only mode, and that some people have been able to get through and update their stuff / review / favorite, but apparently back in the day, when FF.net decided to purge NC-17 fics, they did it under the guise of taking the site down "in remembrance" of 9/11. So, take that as you will.

All I can say is - thank Jeebus we still have Media Miner! At least we anime/manga fic writers aren't going through withdrawals quite as bad as those poor souls only on FF.net, LOL...

ETA: The source of the afore-mentioned rumor. Twilight wank, anyone? LOL.

[identity profile] eggplantlady.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That rumor made me laugh, regardless of the source. And if they really do purge the M rated fics? It would probably be because the vast majority of them are NC-17 fics marked as M simply because it's the highest rating the site allows. And I wouldn't blame them at all.

It did make me think that I ought to save my reviews for posterity, on the off chance that anything does happen to my fics... I know that people with vendettas or agendas can get fics removed with surprising quickness, even if FF.net itself doesn't take action against M rated fics in general. So I went to look and realized that all my best reviews are on MediaMiner, so it's no big loss. And besides, I've been expecting at least one of my fics to get removed for inappropriate content almost since I started posting it. XD

[identity profile] eggplantlady.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine it was a HUGE deal when they purged NC-17 fics from the site

It was. Oh, how I remember the bawwing. LOL, I was young and naive enough then that I didn't even know what an NC-17 rating meant or what the hubbub was about.

There are plenty of other places to post explicit material, and MM.org doesn't exactly have a "small" following, so I don't get what the deal is, other than people are 1) rebellious or 2) lazy.

I'm gonna go with "lazy" as my choice. They want the quick influx of lots of readers that ff.net brings.

Thank goodness for screengrab is all I can say! :P

I just chucked 'em all into an html file. That way I can delete the ones I never want to see again and pretend they never existed. LOL

I get a pretty equal balance; I can't find the Sess/Kag crowd at MM.org, so I get most of my support for those stories at FF.net.

I get more reviews at FF.net, but they mostly tend to be of the "update soon!" variety (but to be honest, my hit:review ratio is about the same at any of the main sites). I much prefer the quality of reviews that I get over at MediaMiner, even if I get more hits/reviews at FF.net...

Oh, I am going totally crazy. I finally just edited another doc in the doc section and have my latest up in the doc database, but now I'm trying to get it to acknowledge that I have accepted their guidelines. Maybe I'll get this stupid piece loaded today and feel like I can write something new. If not, well, my original story and my spinning wheel are here, waiting to be used. I got so much spinning done yesterday. Finished a ball of yarn that's almost enough to knit a sock.

[identity profile] knittingknots.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's my monthly hits...the hit counter is working, even if it gets hard to see it...and I'm darned close to a record number of hits...and seeing that hit counter is the best motivator I have that keeps me writing when I don't feel like writing...can I get it just a little higher? Can I break last month's totals? That motivates me a lot more than any other feedback...LOL.

It's silly, but whatever it takes to keep at the day to day grind. It's been working, too. I'm much better at daily writing now than before they started doing the monthly totals.

I hear ya about making a living at it. I'm plotting the story of a couple at the end of the American Revolution, and how they deal with life during the first decade after the war. They start in a community near Reading, PA and end up in Kentucky. This is a story I've been playing with off and on for awhile, but lately the urge to write it again is getting pretty strong.

I've written a few sketches in the past about them, but all of a sudden, I realized that I didn't have enough data about life right at the end of the war, so I am digging that up...

[identity profile] knittingknots.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've been thinking about this story a long time...not to say nothing from my fanfic thoughts might not blend in, but late 18th century IS my fun non-fanfic time period right now...I even do historical reenacting in it.

First this story was just going to be about them going to Kentucky in 1790, but now I've gotten interested in the immediate post Rev War impact on families, and decided to push it back.

Next on my agenda for that tale is a trip out to Pennsylvania. If I'm lucky, it'll be this spring sometime. (Hubby has ancestral roots in the place we want to go, and one of his ancestors was kind of important in the Rev War and I'm trying to nudge him into working on a biography of him).

[identity profile] knittingknots.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have bought so many real books on 16th century Japan that I'm going to have to write something real eventually...although it might not be fiction...but my American Civil war and 18th C book collections are probably bigger, especially when I add in the craft related books...Let me know if you ever have any questions about Victorian knitting...I know a lot, have a nice little collection of original books on the subject, and have privately published a few small pattern books on the subject...LOL.

Hot Damn!

By constantly hitting refresh, I finally got my stupid last poem listed at FF...

Maybe now my muses will come back to play....LOL.

I have too...and must have done another billion times this morning...but once in a blue moon a page will work...each step of the way took forever.

You can download a Mozzila firefox plugin that will automatically refresh the page every 5-10-15 or 30 seconds... that may help. (I believe it's called, 'refresh every')

Oh I *love* that plugin.
It wasn't giving me any luck last night tho :( Dumb ff.net...
Today it's working fine, though - yay!!

I am glad that I found other fanfic sites to read from as FF use to be my only one. Now I only go there to update my own stories and to read those few fics that I am subscribed to. Of course, I have found most of those authors on other sites now. All but Tally, I think.

"NOOOOOOOOOO FF.NET COME BACK TO MEEEEEE!"

Seriously - when I noticed ff.net was down, I began reading at mm.org.
And ED.
I've got back-ups!! *le gasp*

There's just so many other places to look... how do people not know these things?? I'm tempted to make a big post about it *facepalm*

Ooooh... that's a good point.
I was going to make a post going "OH HAI GUYZ IT'S OKAY" but now that you mention it... yeah, I don't want mm.org dying a slow, painful death!
*whispers* It'll be our little secret ;)

[identity profile] plumespixie2.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I would really like to know what these 'backups' are - and you can tell me, because I don't have anything up at mm.org anyway, so I won't contribute to any slow painful death, IN FACT, I'll make you a deal... You give me ONE other site where I can search by pairing and I'll actually go to mm.org and MAKE a profile and start to post there too! *Bats eyes, gets on hands and knees, begs shamelessly*

I have to admit, aff.net and ff.net are the only two places I've found to search by pairing. That's one thing I'd *love* to see at mm.org... I'd give my husband's left nut for it!

Edit: I'm dumb and forgot http://www.inuyasha-fanfiction.com/ has archiving by pairing, too!

It's not the end of the world but it is annoying. I just want to post a new chapter goddammit! *grumbles* I sincerely hope that removing the M stories is a rumour. If it's truth that goes pretty much everything I have posted at FF.net.

[identity profile] plumespixie2.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
PS, YES, I'm complaining about FF.net, but I'm also not FREAKING OUT that I can't log-in... I'd actually MUCH rather move to a different site, but AFF is like the badlands of fanfiction, and MM.org I have a feeling most of my readers would have NO IDEA how to find my stories, since you can't search by pairing.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to go to mm.org and make a profile and figure out how to post there. I've heard it's easy.

I haven't had 'issues' of any kind, I just notice the reviews I get at ff.net are things like 'Plz update cuz ur storie is sooo gud!', and AFF I thought was mostly for PWP type stuff, not actual STORIES, (I mean, there are a few actual stories, but not many), and I like to have a little plot with my lemon, y'know?

I have 68 M rated stories on FF.net and just spent the last 1 1/2 hours backing them all up via copy/paste, because I had a hard drive crash awhile back and some of those stories ONLY existed THERE. If they didn't give people NOTICE and just YANKED the stories that is pretty mean-spirited.

FF.net is full of 13yr olds and FAIL lately though!

Thanks for the info/RUMOR. XD

Well, I suffered a Hard Drive Crash awhile back, and so, some of my FF.net stories have NO BACKUPS!

Just IN CASE I just spent the last HOUR AND HALF copy/pasting all my M rated stuff into word files and re-saving it all to a memory stick.

If I remember correctly, the last time they 'purged' they gave the authors NO NOTICE at ALL...

This... Mediaminer you speak of... I think I've been there - but you can't search by pairing, can you? Hmmm... I MAY need to consider getting an account there anyway. Anything I should know if I DO?

The thing is, I have some stories that are 'M' Rated that aren't even SEX... some just deal with things that I wouldn't want younger readers reading, so I put up VERY EXTENSIVE warnings and ALWAYS rate on the 'high' side of things.

I don't know, either way, I'd like to expand beyond ff.net, which seems like it has a younger reader base than some of the other sites, and I needed to back up those files anyway.

You SO ROCK!

I don't mind a smaller pool of higher quality fics VS a large amount of badfic... I'll take quality over quantity ANY day!

Thank you so much for all your help :)

I'm setting up the profile at mm.org right now - this is, actually, remarkably easy...

In the NC-17 purge there was advance notice and a couple of reminders before the stories went down. I had only recently found the site and quickly downloaded every NC-17 story that looked at all interesting I could over the weekend before the purge only to find that most of them were total crap and not worth keeping.
