Because I need a break from the drama...
Character: Sesshoumaru (maybe if I flatter him a little, he'll be willing to work with me on the upcoming Fleeting chapters...he is mighty resistant when he wants to be!)
1. Do you like this character?
Yes, he's my favorite Inuyasha character, and part of what drew me into fandom in the first place, trying to figure out his mysteries.
2. What name/s do you call this character?
Sesshoumaru, though sometimes I shorten it to "Sess" when dealing with my muses. I don't use any of his usual fanon names unless I'm being majorly sarcastic, LOL.
3. What color do you associate with character?
Silver, gold, and ice blue
4. What song do you associate with character?
"Selfless, Cold, & Composed" by Ben Folds Five (video)
5. What blood-type do you think this character is?
*blinks* That's why characters are given blood types, because there are associated characteristics?
Huh...learn something new everyday.
6. What character do you like to pair this character with?
Kagome is my current victim :P He has no official canon mate, so he's something of a free agent. I like the potential dynamics created when sticking these two together in a situation neither of them asked for, precisely because their canon relationship is strained, at best. I'm also open to a pairing with Kagura, or an OC, depending on the author. I don't like to read him with Rin at all, and will generally do my best to avoid that ship.
7. What would you want to say to this character?
"I understand."
8. Which do you want to do with this character: Shake hands, hug, or kiss?
If I had my druthers, a hug, but he doesn't seem to be a touchy-feeling kinda guy :P
9. Please choose 5 friends with your choice of character.

You haven't had the chance to read Journey yet, have you??? Not that there's any funky business going on there, as she's twelve, but still. . .hmmmmm
I almost always associate Sesshomaru with anything and everything Depeche Mode. The Sinner In Me, and the new song Come Back (great for the manga arc where he loses Rin that second time). . .ahhhhhhh Depeche. I can't say I've heard the Ben Fold's Song, though. I might have to give it a whirl.

LOL, this is what I usually say to people, only with Sess/Kag. I have no idea how I manage to attract so many people to my f-list who can't stand the main pairing I'm working with at the moment (even though I write a variety of stuff, including canon ships).
I have a few friends who like Sess/Rin, and I've even written the ship as a gift!fic, but it squicks me, especially if its a romantic ship while she's still, technically, a child and under his guardianship.

Honestly? No. You're like 78 chapters in now, so at this point I figure it might be better to wait till you finish before taking the plunge :P Plus, I'm not familiar with the material you're crossing it with.
LOL, it's just another on my very long list of epic fanfics to catch up on...
I can't say I've heard the Ben Fold's Song, though. I might have to give it a whirl.
The title probably makes you go, "Wah?!" but the song is really nice. The first S/K piece I wrote revolved around four BF5 songs and that one, along with "Evaporated" (video) are the ones that stuck to my ribs, so to speak.
It's always interesting to see different interpretations of Sesshoumaru, because we can get rabid enough to believe ours is the only *correct* one, LOL :P
no subject
Oh, take your time. I've been told most people have no trouble with the other material when they read the story, so hopefully when you do take that plunge it'll be the same for you.
Let's just put it this way: I've thrown Sesshomaru some mighty big curve balls.

Guardian/ward in general is a squick of mine; I don't like the idea of anybody having anything to do with the raising of their mate. But, at the same time, I recognize it's a YMMV thing and thus, do not feel the need to chastise those who enjoy the ship, whatever their incarnation of it.
Let's just put it this way: I've thrown Sesshomaru some mighty big curve balls.
Me, too! :) I just can't resist torturing him, even if just a teensy bit, in my work.
no subject
I see what you're saying about it being strange that you've practically raised your own mate, but at the same time, I always get the impression that Sess isn't entirely sure WHAT a human girl should be doing at any age and hasn't really taught her what a human would typically know by now. He's seemed to just let her be the wild child to a degree---ie letting her get her own food and the like. On the other hand, it's the one character I see him actually relating to on a romantic level someday, considering how fast she'll grow up and how slow he ages, it's not impossible which is why I seem to be okay with it. I think if he was a 50 year old man and she was going to marry him at 15, it'd be icky and wrong, though.
I generally stay away from certain pairings, like Sess/Kag, but I'm not totally adverse to it. I think the trick in any story is making sure it's a believable plot. I typically avoid Sess/Kag because so much of it's the same scenerio of Kagome finding Inuyasha with Kikyo and running into Sesshomaru and they run off to make hot love. Blech. If it was a believable reason, I'd give it a shot. I can see where their contrasting personalities might make for an interesting relationship.
And yeah, the best part of ANY story with Sess in it is the throwing of the curve ball. If you don't keep on his toes he'll get lazy and bored.
no subject
It's not really the age thing that bothers me, so much as the "raising" bit, or [in general] being in their lives as children. Just...no. Getting a little bit too close to incest for my personal tastes, you know?

Well, not to toot my own horn, but I've been told my stories are conversion-worthy :P The typical fanon cliche that you mention? Is one I hate with a vengeance. To me, the whole point of writing an alternate pairing is to tackle the challenge of canon head-on and coming out on the other side with a believable set of events.
This is why I'm NOT popular within the S/K corner fandom, LOL. I'd much rather focus on their relationship dynamics than on the sweet, sweet lovin' :P
And the funny thing? In my more canon pieces, there are strong hints of a past Sess/Rin romantic relationship, of the sort I rather openly despise. But, well, if you're attempting to do justice to a Sess/Kag pairing in future!post-canon manga...you kinda can't deny either one of their relationships, now can you? It's been an interesting conundrum, to say the least.
And yeah, the best part of ANY story with Sess in it is the throwing of the curve ball.
He's still got a few headed his way in Fleeting and I don't think he appreciates it very much. I got him to *finally* open up and be vulnerable two chapters ago and now he's about to pay for it dearly...

I'll have to seriously consider reading some of your stuff at some point because I'd like to see HOW those two could work together without it being the cliched method. It's usually what I see when I look in the archive, so I almost have written the pairing off altogether.
I just hope when you do attempt to read my stuff that you'll be pleasantly surprised, too. I have spent way more time in Journey focusing upon Sesshomaru's emotional self, and Rin is a huge portion of that rather it's eventually romantic or not. I also make him, at least in private, a bit more physical with his contact with Rin, not because of some romantic overture, but because he's a canine. My dog loves to sit on laps and be as close to her people as possible. Just about every dog I've ever known is that way, so why not Sesshomaru?
no subject
I hope you have the chance. I'm actually posting both of my current serials here to my LJ, so you will receive periodic updates on your f-list. Fleeting is the AU; Allegiance is the post-canon.
I just hope when you do attempt to read my stuff that you'll be pleasantly surprised, too.
I'm sure I will. I've certainly enjoyed talking to you, and if you're half as thoughtful in your fic as you are in your meta, I already know I'm going to have a ball :P
I also make him, at least in private, a bit more physical with his contact with Rin, not because of some romantic overture, but because he's a canine.
I beta for a girl who has the exact same sort of interpretation of him, and who draws on his canine heritage much more than I do (I prefer working under the 'Ice Lord' moniker, myself :P). We've had some interesting discussions about his level of physical interaction with the various characters. I tend to write him as having a very rich inner life, only choosing to share it with a select few people, so its intriguing when someone can do kinda the opposite and still make it so characteristic of him.
That's why I love his character so much - he's such a mystery, and, if the author's willing to do the work, can be subject to many different, believable interpretations.
no subject
I'm glad I appear thoughtful. I try!
Sesshomaru's only physical in his interactions really with Rin when in private, it's mostly an unconscious thing on his part, I think, to put his scent on her. They ARE in a foreign world and he's a bit nervous. Other than that, his physical nature emerges when he's arguing with Inuyasha a few times---and believe it or not, that relationship actually starts to improve, too. I kind of blend his aristocratic nature with his canine. He tends to be very particular and he has no qualms about expressing his displeasure with something, be it a look or a biting remark and the more uncouth one is, the more aristocratic he becomes. It's when he lets go of that nature that he tends to be more canine. I also removed Jaken from his everyday, which changes his behavior some, too.
His character is one of the richest, despite the fanon impression of him. I often argue with him, and lose for some reason.

I know what you mean! I stick with authors I know, and pretty much never venture out in the great fandom unknown without at least one rec in hand.
I hope to have the next chapter of Fleeting up reasonably soon. It's actually from Kagome's POV; its just a matter of waiting for the right emotions to snap into place. The chapter after that is going to be a bitch, though.
I love writing from prompt tables, LMAO...

Oh, no doubt. I'm playing with the ideas of scent-marking and human emotions with Allegiance, so I've explored a bit of this territory. I totally agree that these are things he'd do, even if he wasn't completely aware of it or the reasons why he'd feel compelled. He shows he cares in small, silent ways. Sometimes, its easier to write for him than for someone who'd be out professing his love and desire to protect, LOL.
I often argue with him, and lose for some reason.
Sesshoumaru and I mostly get along famously; it was more me trying to overcome my fear of writing for such a complex character that held me back for the longest. However, I think he's catching onto my muses' plans for coming torture and is starting to become resistant!
no subject
So you prefer to write in the third person limited as well? It seems to make a story much more manageable, at least I think so.
His scent marking is mostly through holding Rin or keeping in close contact. For what's it's worth, you could say he's scent marked Inuyasha, too, with all of those fights. I love the fact that Sesshomaru is subtle. It's what makes him interesting and much more challenging to write for. His opposite is Koga with his loud declarations. I think when one earns a remark from Sesshomaru it means more. He really meant for that person to know he felt that way and that they're worthy to get it.
Sesshomaru argues with me because he KNOWs I'm going to be torturing him down the road and he really would rather I didn't. He also doesn't like the changes I've made to Rin and his resistance has been great because of it. It was necessary to equalize their characters, but that doesn't mean he likes it!

Yes. With Fleeting, it's part of the challenge, because the characters' perceptions of each other - and of other characters, like Inuyasha - differ wildly. It helps the reader to hear "both sides of the story", so to speak. I'm having a lot of fun with this serial, even though its growing more and more complicated with each entry. It's the first time I've not committed to a certain style for an entire piece before writing the first scene, but I think it's helped - I'm building the layers of complexity asymmetrically.
What can I say, its fun to roam free sometimes.

THIS, exactly. Heh, I knew there was a reason I also favored having Koga as his foil rather than Inuyasha! :P
Sesshomaru argues with me because he KNOWs I'm going to be torturing him down the road and he really would rather I didn't.
Heh, same :P He fought me long and hard after I wrote this piece. That's probably my favorite entry in the series thus far, and I hated to destroy the tranquility - but it must be done!

I typically stick to third person limited, but did write a Sess/Rin lemon one night in first person from Sess's point of view. I didn't plan it, it rather just happened. Most of the the time, third person limited allows me to jump from character to character, especially in Journey, so I can have a bunch of story lines all at once. Truthfully, each character does have their own POV on every thing happening and that makes it work best.
I haven't really had a chance to use Koga as Sesshomaru's foil, but when I think about the characters, they are the more logical foil pair. Inuyasha is stiff with his emotions in a different way than Sesshomaru, but Koga has no qualms about shouting his love or feelings to the sky. I think of Inuyasha and Sesshomaru rather being opposites of the same coin in a lot of ways. Sesshomaru is the confident one while Inuyasha hides his lack of confidence under false bravado.
I think when Sesshomaru actually has to face a real challenge we find him to be his most interesting, which is why the Hell arc is so fascinating and good. He couldn't power his way through the situation, and was rendered rather powerless, which made him more real. Of all the arcs with in the series, it's the one that sticks with me the most---that and Rin finding him in the first place.

Well, something worked, because its my most award-winning fic ever! :P I like to think it was the overarching theme of finding yourself, or maybe the rather clever tie-in to the canon, but it was probably because of the sex, LOL.

Same :) Although as the stories progress, more and more limits seem 'natural' - like for Allegiance, it's all just from Sesshoumaru's point of view; or Fleeting, were only Sesshoumaru and Kagome's POVs are explored, despite the (growing) cast of characters they interact with.
I've written a few contest pieces from first person POV but I vastly prefer third person and past tense - just kinda goes better with my introspective style, I suppose :P

Well, one reason I like to use Koga (besides the fact that he's kinda a doofus :P) is because I try my very best to not demonize Inuyasha - another HUGE S/K fic cliche. I *like* Inuyasha, and Inu/Kag is my canon ship of choice, so I don't see the need to make him into some evil or stupid creature just to get the Sess/Kag ship to sail.
I had just never really thought of them in those terms until you mentioned it, but they really are more opposites than Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha.

Oh, so totally definitely agreed!!! I think my favorite arc is the early 500 chapters, when he learns of Tenseiga's "true value" and has to face his father's ghost, so to speak, to finally give up his pursuit of Tessaiga and gain his own weapon. The whole meidou zangetsuha arc, we really see what he's made of.

I'm very much the same way. A lot of my writing incorporates a lot of introspection in all of the characters I tackle, so third person limited works, where first person would be almost too immediate, although I've seen it used well, for instance in Philippa Gregory's novels, she tends to handle three characters in first person/past tense. I might consider it for a story at some point myself.
When I pit Inuyasha and Sesshomaru head to head in their arguments, cause let's face it, they don't get along on most points, I make sure that both their strengths and weaknesses are shown. It is only fair to both of them. I also think it's critical that the two of them put their past behind them and admit where both were wrong, so I usually focus on them growing in that area. That's one of my problems with the series, because while they did grow a bit closer towards the end, they still hadn't really put that behind them.
I love when he finally acquires his own strength and gets his own sword. It took him a long time to grow up, but boy when he did, did he ever grow up fast!

Tis another reason I'm not a particularly popular S/K author - I don't write reams of the stuff. Frankly, its rather boring ~ I'd much rather explore the buildup and possible consequences rather than the act itself, which is why I'm surprised so many people tell me they enjoyed my citrusy content. I think its one of my weaker points, but who am I to argue? :P
That's one of my problems with the series, because while they did grow a bit closer towards the end, they still hadn't really put that behind them.
I haven't really written a lot about their relationship with each other, so much as how that strained relationship affects the other characters, but I'd agree. The entirety of the story feels unbalanced, even though they worked together at the very end to defeat Naraku & his incarnations.
As for the rest...well, I agree, I agree, I agree! LOL, its nice to find someone who enjoys meta as much as I do...
no subject
I found that both Inu brothers decided that they hated Naraku more than they hated each other. It was an easier method than having them truly deal with their inherent problems. I've worked hard in Journey to change that. Besides, it keeps both of them on their toes.
I'm a big fan of meta. Meta Lovers should unite!
no subject
Yeah, this. If I'm going to write a lemon, it's going to be creamy :) Technical details are boring - let me know how the players are acting, reacting, feeling, thinking, etc. Plus, well, I dread the purple prose leik woah and sweat over whether or not I'm heading there with my own ramblings...
So, yeah, I've found its better to do the citrus in small doses. Doesn't mean I haven't awoken a fluffy smutty muse from out of nowhere, but it doesn't get the best of me. Not yet, at least :P
I'm a big fan of meta. Meta Lovers should unite!
This whole journal is meta; I'm just glad I've managed to find people who tolerate and/or even enjoy it! :)

My journal is a mix of things, but I do like to have a bit of the introspection in between the rants.

I'm...open to Sess/Rin if it's a good writer that makes it work but otherwise it squicks me (unless she's grown up). I'm a HUGE Rin/Kohaku shipper so... that usually interferes. Sesshoumaru/Kagura was always a kick-ass ship. Too bad there isn't more of that anymore...
no subject
And, well, anything will be the exception to the rule in the hands of a good author :) Sess/Rin is a ship I do not seek out and, if I stumble upon it accidentally, I'm less likely to read the story. A few of my favorite authors write it and I just kinda politely skip those parts, LOL :P
Sess/Kagura is pretty awesome, but pretty rare - but, considering the reviews I got on my one and only piece revolving around them, I get the impression the fans of the pairing are fiercely loyal :)

better than the ones we usually see over at Dokuga. At least your Sesshoumaru has some faults and he is not Mr. Perfect. That is why I like RT's Sesshoumaru. He has to grow up and find his way to the daiyoukai status. I love how he has to discover his feelings and realize what is really important.
He almost cries when he realizes that Tenseiga will not revive Rin in hell.
Standing in front of SessMom he cannot express his sadness over Rin so Jaken has to do it.The anger he feels toward Mouryoumaru for saying Kagura's life was worthless. The wonderful scene in "Wind" where he tells Kagura that he came to see her. Jumping into the meidou to save Inuyasha. Coming to save Inuyasha from losing his soul.

I'd hope it'd be obvious by now, LOL :P

Thanks! :) You know how important it is for me to keep the characters in character, no matter what situation we throw them in. To me - no matter if its AU or post-canon - you have to keep exactly *those* traits at the center and forefront, because that's the core of who he is, and those are the things about him that won't change even if his situation does.
The fun comes in trying to tease it apart and let him grow within the boundaries of your setting/plot. But then, I always enjoyed a challenge, LOL!
