I blame this completely on Nihon Idol. I've been delving back into the universe leik woah, which includes rewatching the entire season (with special focus on the episode I'm using as a basis for the upcoming chapter) and listening to the soundtrack on a constant loop. One of the songs - the song for the next-to-last chapter, in fact - rubbed my Mir/San muse the right way, and thus, this little drabble was born.
Here's the video for those interested. I think I'm going to get quite a bit of mileage out of this song, for my various fics. I'm still searching for the right tone for the proposed Mir/San lemon, and this is getting pretty close...
And lyrics, just to make the inspiration obvious :P
What just happened - did you kiss me?
Cause that's a place we've never been until now
And I don't know how it's gonna be after this
Do we pretend these feelings don't exist at all...
Or do we fall?
My confusion shows whenever you get so close
I stumble, I stutter, forget to say
I'm nervous, I wonder why I'm acting this way
You've made a move - don't change your mind
Too much to lose, we've crossed the line
Between friends...and something more
Was it all a big mistake, and if it was
it's much too late to undo - and I don't really want to -
- let you go, but I still don't know
How I feel about you, what this really means
It's crazy to want you, is it meant to be?
Tell me this song wasn't made for this pairing, LOL! =)
Anyway, I really liked the idea that maybe their first kiss wasn't as perfect as all first kisses are supposed to be (not are, mind you, but are supposed to be), and that, like everything else with this couple, it would turn into something far more complicated that it appeared on the surface.
I'm not sure if Sango's reasons are completely clear (argh, blame the word limit!) here, but she's not necessarily pushing Miroku away because she doesn't want him, but because she does, and feels unworthy of him with her life currently in complete shambles. She doesn't want to drag him down into her problems, and wants to spare him the grief she's currently suffering - very much along the lines of that "I want to protect you from me" theme that they seem to get caught up in as the manga draws to a close.
I think Miroku always knew she was the one for him, even if he didn't want his proposal to happen as it did, and maybe isn't ready to settle into monogamy just yet. Hopefully his quiet frustration comes out at the end, along with his new understanding of Sango and her feelings towards herself and the situation she's become mired in.
Something else I hoped to avoid but fear I didn't was the emo!angsty!Sango trap. Hopefully the explanation is believable, that she'd feel even worse about things as the anniversary of her family's death approached, and she realized just how little she'd accomplished. This idea was actually born from a comment someone left on this beautiful piece by
paynesgrey, about how we don't realize just how tough Sango's life was during the jewel quest. It really made me think...so much of the manga is focused on Inuyasha (obviously) and the trials and changes he goes through - when the rest of the group has it just as badly, or worse, in some cases.
So, yeah. Another challenge met =) I'd like to complete the whole set of these, as well as the lemon challenge (the smutty fluffy muses have been threatening their revenge for all that teasing in Fleeting, LOL), but we'll see what happens.
