Manga panel coloring experiment

Hot damn, I just learned how to color manga panels!

I'm making a banner for psyco_chick32, and she picked out manga images to use...so, on a whim (literally), I decided to give coloring a whirl. Here are the results:

Now I just need to figure out WTF I did...note to self: stop having moments of genius in the middle of the goddamn night.

Cool! Good for you. I need to learn how to do that too. I seem to have forgotten everything I once knew about Photoshop. hmmm...

Double click your image in the layers menu to make it editable (or "Layer 0"), then set it to "multiply" using the drop down menu right above it. Create layers underneath your image layer to color on... by setting your image layer to "multiply" it makes it transparent save for the lines so the color underneath it shows through.

No worries! You are the resident arteest around here, hehe. I don't have Photoshop, only Paint.NET, so it was literally trial and error. I'm just so pleased my very first try came out so nicely! Now the trick will be trying to remember what the hell I did...

Thank you! That is a technique that I did not know about. I used Photoshop back when I was in the printing/publishing business and we didn't learn the more creative aspects of it. I'm really excited - must go try!

I'm afraid this is one of those once-in-a-million things, LOL - will I be able to replicate this? Probably not. And just the word Photoshop gives me hives...I did this with Paint.NET, believe it or not!

Well, now that I'm doing banners for a couple of comms, I've wanted to learn how to color the manga panels in a semi-decent way. I don't think I've done that yet (thank God the story I made this banner for is AU, is all I can say!), but I was so pleased with the results of my first experiment, I just couldn't resist sharing.

Its fun to make banners, though - for those of us who can't draw, it gives us a chance to play with images anyway :P

Not bad for 3 am delusions, was it? A tip - pick a nice, cleanly-drawn, small image to work with. I should've cleaned this one up, but I literally just started coloring them on a whim and didn't even think about cleaning up the images beyond cropping them from their backgrounds.

When psyco_chick32 debuts her story, I'll post the banners I made for her here, and you can see the full extent of my experiments :P In the meantime, I might have to dig up those colors and find more pretty panels of Sesshoumaru...I kinda dig the look he ended up with here, crude though it might be.
