*snerk* I've been getting a lot of mileage out of that "Etchings" portrait by the esteemable
technoelfie...though technically, this piece came first (before Illicit), and was built completely around the image of Sesshoumaru and his beautiful bedroom eyes.
I've been having a love affair not only with that portrait of Sesshoumaru, but also with the idea of writing without dialogue, hoping my descriptive powers can convey the emotions of the characters. I really admire authors who can do this, and its no easy thing when you have a chatterbox like Kagome to work with. But this was fun, and I also stuck in some interesting twists to go along with my schmoopy romance.
In this little drabble, we see Kagome coming home after a long week at a medical conference, ready to slip into bed and forget her troubles like so much dust on the wind. She does that, grabbing a little snack before heading up stairs, checking on her daughter, and finding a bit of solace in her husband's arms. Just a nice little romantic/comfort fic to warm your heart, yes? :)
I really like the idea of Sesshoumaru waiting up for Kagome, instead of the other way around - so often he's portrayed as the more powerful partner in any relationship, mirroring his taiyoukai status from the canon story, where he has no real equal...but here, I enjoyed playing with the image of him comforting their daughter, the two of them waiting up anxiously for mommy to arrive home after a long night or week away, and of course the lovely image portrayed in the artwork, of him staring at her with glowing golden eyes, his expression muted yet inviting.
I never know, when I'm writing alternate universe scenarios, if Sesshoumaru retains his demonic heritage or not until the moment I begin to describe him. I always let him keep his coloring (that's the best part, no? :)), but when it comes to fangs or claws or markings, it's like my fingers know before my brain does. Most of the time, it doesn't matter (especially with shorts like this one), as he never displays his youki in any way, but it can add an interesting dimension to the fic, as it does here - why is he waiting up for her? What sort of job does he have, or does he have one at all? What's their backstory, did he live five hundred years to meet her? What about their daughter? All these sorts of questions are like wisps of backstory, and maybe that's why I often receive pleas to pick up a short piece and continue it.
This piece started as the scene at the end, of Sesshoumaru wordlessly opening his arms in welcome, and I have to say, I'm pleased with the way the momentum built up to it. All credit for that goes to my inspiration song, "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Even so, I was shocked to see this win the competition (fourth week in a row I've won at
ebony_silks - you guys totally spoil me!!), considering its far more sappy and romantic than my usual fare. But I suppose one of the community commenters summed it up nicely when she said, "It's so nice to be greeted like that when you get home. And Sesshoumaru greeting you? Well, even better! :D"
So enjoy ~ and remember, they don't love you like I love you...
