And I loathe the English dub...loathe, loathe, loathe it.
Oh well.
Kohaku, and his shard is an important factor in this part of the story...how to keep Kohaku alive while taking out Naraku is part of Inu's motivation, Kikyou wants to use Kohaku's shard as a way to deliver a poison pill to Naraku, and it's Kohaku who will eventually free Kagome from the time Naraku had grabbed her, and in having Naraku take his shard, gave the now dead Kikyou a chance to fully redeem herself from the need for revenge by choosing to save Kohaku's life instead of going onto kill Naraku, thus putting the whole job of purifying the jewel into Kagome's hands. He's a pretty important plot device...and he's important in the death of Kagura, and how that impacts Sessh...so, I'm not surprised it got pushed here.
I was pretty pleased with the episode.
Since they only got the go-ahead for one season, it's gonna be a lot of material to cover. So far, in my opinion as someone who has condensed material before, they did a nice job.
