Inuyasha: The Final Act | 1 - Naraku's Heart
So the subbed episodes of the anime are up, both at Hulu and Shonen Sunday. I was able to watch it commercial-free at Hulu (guess I got back to the States just in time, LOL) and it was a pretty action-packed ride! Its nice to see everything animated again, and it'll be interesting to see how much of the story they cut and/or simplify.
I guess it's what we expected, considering only 26 episodes were ordered, in order to cover 21 volumes (approx 210 chapters) of manga. Even with the filler arcs, that's still shaving it mighty close to still include all the important stuff.
So I went and had a look ~ they skipped the medicine seller arc altogether (Chapters 357-358) and started with material from Chapter 359, "Hitoukon," where the little youkai that overpowers hosts is introduced in the form of a mountain dog. In the anime, Kohaku deals with this demon himself, with no help/intervention from the Inutachi, and he catches up to Kagura, to have the discussion of the location of Naraku's heart that's covered in chapter 368. The actual death of Goryoumaru is related to the Inutachi via a heated discussion between Kagura and Hakudoshi, instead of the way it was depicted in approximately five chapters of the manga, where both the Inutachi and Sesshoumaru fought with the newly transformed Mouryoumaru. The episode covers the betrayal and death of Hakudoshi, and leads directly into the end of Kagura's fate.
I was actually pretty impressed with the first episode, even if they did condense and simplify ten chapters of manga action into 24 minutes of playtime. The animation is reminiscent of the movies instead of the first anime, which has its strong and weak points. I liked the animation of Kagura's dance of blades (very impressive), and the adamant barrage attack, but the rest seemed a bit stilted, in the style of the movies. I was surprised and pleased to see at least a cameo from every major character in the series (the only one who didn't have any face time was Kaede), and splices of daily life from both the modern and feudal eras. We saw Naraku's group first, then Kagome's friends at her school, which lead to a LOL-worthy cut to Sesshoumaru's group (poor, put-upon Jaken!), and finally back to the reunited Inutachi. Even Koga and Kikyo had moments of action against Mouryoumaru. Instead of a dreaded "catch-up" episode, the second anime jumped right back into the story, so glossing over as much as they did feels a bit more forgivable.
It appears the next episode will be Kagura's death (and Koga's fight for the gorashi, which is being subbed as "Lightning Claws"), and the scenes we've seen via the preview here and the longer-cut preview at Shonen Sunday make me think its really going to be a good one! Goodness knows they spent most of this episode trying to redeem Kagura and make her sympathetic o.O But, Kagura's death means more facetime for Sesshoumaru, so you won't hear any complaints from this department :D Maybe it will breathe a bit more life into that ship, as the modern-day scenes from this episode will delight those Inu/Kag fans.
All in all, this was pretty good ~ if they can stay away from packing 10 chapters' worth of storyline into an episode, then I like the chances of seeing my favorite arcs coming to life: the Hell arc (with SessMom OMG!!!!!), Kikyo's death, Bakusaiga, and the rebirth of Hiraikotsu...before the big showdown. *fingers crossed*
Of the new opening/ending, I like the ending better - the song is pretty fast-paced, and it chronicles all of the important relationships between the characters in the story, starting with the brothers and ending with the red thread of destiny, tying Inuyasha and Kagome together. That was a magnificent piece of animation IMO, and here's hoping it'll be attached to most of the episodes!

The fact that I'm 90% certain any/all Mir/San stuff will get cut from this or glossed over totally has nothing to do with my annoyance.no subject
Well, that's the price we pay to have simulcast streaming...makes me wonder how much the subtitles sucked, but overall, I thought it was okay.
The only thing that surprised me was seeing Kagura and Kohaku get as much screentime as they did. I was expecting a lot more of Inuyasha and Kagome.
That's because Kagura's about to die, LOL! I'm guessing it will be the first half of the next episode, with Sesshoumaru's vengeance-seeking battle and Koga's discovery of the gorashi taking up the second half.
Frankly, I was okay with this. I thought it nice that they deigned to show all of the cast again, but I was less happy that they squeezed in so much storyline from the manga. I've got my fingers crossed that it won't be a total rushjob, but I have a feeling A LOT of my initial impression of the new anime will rest on the next episode, and how they handle Kagura's death.
I'm surprised they cut out the battle with Mouryoumaru, considering it was during one of Inuyasha's most vulnerable nights, and it was one of the rarer moments of the brothers fighting together against a common enemy, but then again...considering it was the first episode, how much can we ask for? :-/
I'm going to be PISSED if they skip the Hell arc. I'll probably not be able to forgive them that. (Next on my list of "things I want to see" is the rebirth of Hiraikotsu, so you have an ally in hoping that the Mir/San stuff won't get cut out - lord knows there's plenty of needless sword upgrades than can be skipped instead!)
no subject
then again...considering it was the first episode, how much can we ask for? :-/
Not much, apparently. I don't know that I'll be going out of my way to watch the rest, if it's just going to be glossing over everything in an attempt to cram the last third of the manga (give or take) into 26 episodes. -sigh-
I'm going to be PISSED if they skip the Hell arc.
I have to admit, I've never bothered to read the Hell arc, but it's one of those things I doubt they'll cut (at least not entirely). I'm up in the air about the Hiraikotsu thing, as to whether or not I think they'll leave it in. Time will tell, I guess. Not getting my hopes up, though.
They had better not fuck up Kagura's death or anything from chapter 523 or I will stop watching omfgTimes like this I really, really hate my unending fascination with and attraction to minor characters. Why can't I like the main character(s) for once? Why is it always the expendable secondary characters with me? -sigh- (LOL)
no subject
YES! I wasn't *too* bothered by the voices for this one episode, but I'm one of the few who can't stand Kappei Yamaguchi's Inuyasha voice. (LOL - did lightning just strike me, or was that the sound of half my f-list defriending me? :P)
But the season sets are *so* worth the investment, no matter which voice track you listen to...
I've never bothered to read the Hell arc, but it's one of those things I doubt they'll cut (at least not entirely).
Its a great one for the emotions, and, well, you know me - I'm such a sucker for anything Sesshoumaru-related :P But its something they very well could skip, because nothing "action-packed" comes of it; it is a moment of emotional growth, and it doesn't have anything to do with the 'main' storyline of finding and defeating Naraku. I wouldn't be surprised at all if quite a bit of Sesshoumaru's part gets cut here at the end; I don't know that his Japanese fangirl following is as strong as the one here in the US :P
They had better not fuck up Kagura's death or anything from chapter 523 or I will stop watching omfgI'm with you, on both counts.
Why is it always the expendable secondary characters with me? -sigh-
I feel your pain - this is me, with tennis. I could care less about the superstars; just give me the mentally-unstable, chronically-injured midlist and I fall in love...
no subject
-raises hand- Guilty as charged. Also can't stand Miroku or Sango or... well, okay, the only ones I actually didn't mind were Kagome and Kagura, at least for the "main" characters. And Kagura dies soon, so... XD
I wouldn't be surprised at all if quite a bit of Sesshoumaru's part gets cut here at the end
LOL I'm expecting quite a bit of everything to get cut... except Kagome angsting over Inuyasha/Kikyou. -rolls eyes- I really hope I'm wrong about this stuff. I don't want the series to suck, but after watching it today my enthusiasm sort of died. Hardcore.

Oh well.
Kohaku, and his shard is an important factor in this part of the story...how to keep Kohaku alive while taking out Naraku is part of Inu's motivation, Kikyou wants to use Kohaku's shard as a way to deliver a poison pill to Naraku, and it's Kohaku who will eventually free Kagome from the time Naraku had grabbed her, and in having Naraku take his shard, gave the now dead Kikyou a chance to fully redeem herself from the need for revenge by choosing to save Kohaku's life instead of going onto kill Naraku, thus putting the whole job of purifying the jewel into Kagome's hands. He's a pretty important plot device...and he's important in the death of Kagura, and how that impacts Sessh...so, I'm not surprised it got pushed here.
I was pretty pleased with the episode.
Since they only got the go-ahead for one season, it's gonna be a lot of material to cover. So far, in my opinion as someone who has condensed material before, they did a nice job.

I thought so as well. Viewing it a second time, I see everyone's concern with the pacing (it does feel rather breathless...) but as long as one realizes the anime is going to be inherently different from the manga, there really isn't see much room to bitch.
Not that that will stop anyone *shrug*

Nothing will EVER stop people from bitching in the IY fandom.
EVER.
*le sigh*
ESPECIALLY the manga vs. anime people. Except you know, fr the people like us who can just accept both -_-;;

That statement is blasphemous in my household. lol
That may not be lightning, but if you heard a thud that was my jaw hitting the floor at the anti-Japanese cast sentiment floating around. As
It's funny how people can have such drastically different opinions about the same thing.
no subject
Well, I said I was one of the few, LOL!! The rest of the cast doesn't bother me nearly so much (and I actually prefer Kagome's Japanese voice)...but, well, if you were introduced via the dub, that's prolly where your allegiance will lie. Case in point: I watched subbed Ouran HS Host Club and fell in love; the dub is like listening to nails on a chalkboard, especially of Tamaki.
At least nowadays on the season sets you have your choice of which voice track to listen to!
It's funny how people can have such drastically different opinions about the same thing.
And still be friends? Yeah, in this fandom, that's a freaking miracle!

Not necessarily true. I got into this series because I accidentally caught the premiere of the very first episode on Adult Swim back in 2002. I got all the way up through the first block of Adult Swim episodes before finally discovering torrents and fansubs... I've never looked back since and I wonder how in the hell I watched that many episodes in English to begin with. To me, it sounds like the "nails on a chalkboard" you mentioned, paired with (in my opinion) horrendous acting. :P
The only case I can really think of for myself in which I prefer the English to the Japanese (well, besides the Miyazaki movies sans the Disney dub of Totoro) in a series is Black Jack. I found that series in the animation section of Blockbuster when I was in high school and once I got ahold of the DVDs rather than VHS, I can listen to the Japanese but I prefer the English.

You will never be able to convince me David Kaye is bad at anything <3
Sub vs dub is, like, debating religion in anime fandom ~ I try to avoid the topic at all times! (Though I have to admit, I did the D: face when people asked if we'd have the English voice cast on these simulcast episodes... *facepalm*)
no subject
I will admit that David Kaye is one of the only things about the dub I like. You will never hear me say that about Richard Cox or Monica Stori, though. >_>
(Though I have to admit, I did the D: face when people asked if we'd have the English voice cast on these simulcast episodes... *facepalm*)
It's amazing how well the "D:" captures the look of abject horror that goes along with a question like that. lol

I'm giddy with excitement over Kikyou's death and the Hell arc. Kikyou is my favorite character and her death scene always make me weepy. Ahhh I'm the biggest sucker for unrequited love and Inuyasha's reaction never fails to hit me hard. Such a wonderful way to bring a bit of closure to the "love triangle".
I also liked the ending better. The song was fitting with the level of action (though there was some serious melancholy) and the red thread at the very end worked so well visually.
*sigh* I'd been checking shonensunday off and on through the afternoon, evening. Now I'm just so ready for bed!
no subject
Same here - it is, by far, my favorite death scene in the manga. RT's art is just absolutely gorgeous, and I love the way she lets it speak for itself - just pages and pages of art, with minimal words. *sigh*

Yes! The red thread of destiny is prolly my favorite trope of the whole story, and that was a great way to end the episode, which a closeup of that. It makes me wonder if/how they'll handle the scene in the meidou at the end.
I think what's going to be important here is to remember the anime is essentially a different canon from the manga...it's too easy to get upset about what's left about, but when you think about it, the way they spliced things together here made sense, even if it wasn't "true" to the manga. I've seen some comments saying it felt rushed, and I didn't really have the same notion, though it might've just been the excitement of the moment :D I hope they are able to strike a balance between the action and the emotion, though, or else the last part of the canon story won't mean nearly as much.
I'd been checking shonensunday off and on through the afternoon, evening.
I've been away all day; I guess I managed to hit it at just the right time! If they stay consistent, this will be a pleasant way to spend a Saturday evening (and give me shameless opportunities to watch Community as well).

I would love to see SessMom and the Hell arc too, but otherwise, I'm pretty cool with what they decide to cut... except the ending. We got gypped out of a kiss in the manga, so I hope there's one in this series. While I would like them to actually go in depth into everything, I'm not one of those purists that has to have everything follow the book (or in this case, manga). I dunno - overall, I liked it and was SO glad there wasn't a recap episode.
Um, and did anyone else giggle their face off in the opening credits when Shippo and Jaken were playing what looked like Red Light, Green Light?
no subject
It's been so long since I've read the manga that I had the same questions :P I was glad I wasn't quite aware how much of the story they skipped until after I watched the episode, though - I thought it came together pretty well, all in all. I wish they were giving this last part of the anime the same treatment as they did the first part (in terms of depth of storyline), but the fact that its being continued at all is nothing short of a miracle, so at this point, I'm content to take what I can get.
I only have a short list of deal-breakers, with SessMom being at the very top of it!
although I'm usually repelled by the Sess/Kagura pairing, so next episode might be difficult for me. :P
I like Sess/Kagura - its the only 'canon' ship of his that I'll readily support - but the best part of all is that we'll have more than two seconds of face-time with him, which is enough to make me happy...for now.
We got gypped out of a kiss in the manga, so I hope there's one in this series.
I hope so, too...and judging by how close the two of them appear to be already, in this first episode, I think there's a good chance of a kiss happening, either at Chapter 494 or at the end *fingers crossed*
did anyone else giggle their face off in the opening credits when Shippo and Jaken were playing what looked like Red Light, Green Light?
*raises hand* Oh, yes. I am perfectly fine with them turning Jaken into blatant comic relief :D
no subject
Exactly. I'm kind of at the point where the deal-breaker if Inuyasha dies and the world explodes, like it does in all of the "serious" anime. LoL!
I like Sess/Kagura - its the only 'canon' ship of his that I'll readily support - but the best part of all is that we'll have more than two seconds of face-time with him, which is enough to make me happy...for now.
Oh, yes - anytime with Sesshoumaru is good time! :D And you know, my problem with Sess/Kagura is not so much the canon or even the *idea* - it's how most fanfic handles it. They take out all the fire and independence and bitchiness from Kagura (i.e. all the bits that make me love her) and decide that she has to be tamed for Sesshoumaru to like her. WTF? Argh! I don't know why having Sesshoumaru be sweet to whoever he's paired with is okay with me compared to the pain of seeing Kagura declawed... maybe because I think she already has the capacity to care very much and more toning down isn't needed. I don't know, but it bothers me. /rant :P
Oh, yes. I am perfectly fine with them turning Jaken into blatant comic relief :D
He's one of my favorites! Hehe.

Hehe, I don't get much of it from my f-list, so I'll take what I can! =)

I haven't read much Sess/Kagura fic, but if authors tend to declaw her in order to pair them up, well, that's no good. I'd think he'd become bored of her if there was no challenge but meh, that's just my read...One of the best depictions I've read of these two was in BlackMamba07's Unleashed ~ she captured it all: the forbidden aspect, the chemistry, the tragedy ~ even though it wasn't a prominent storyline or pairing. It just...worked.
That fic is just awesome anyway, but one of the scenes that sticks with me to this day is his reaction to her death. On par with canon, IMO.

I have a feeling its all going to be this rushed, unless they're just going to leave things out, wholesale...I'm sure everyone has their favorite manga moment they want to see animated, and its just a question of, which ones will be?
We have GOT to see Sessmom!
OH GOD PLZ YES. Even if only for the snark factor!
no subject
I have the same feeling. There are so many moments I'd love to see animated. I agree with Eggplantlady, I really hope they don't butcher the Miroku/Sango moments in the manga. It's just so many moments to choose from!! I'm almost afraid to think of what they might cut!

I hear ya! I made this post and then went and read everyone else's and was like, "WTF?!" Geez! Its a small miracle the anime is being finished in the first place, after five years!
*shrug* I can live with it because the anime was always a different canon from the manga, so why should it be any different now? As long as they don't short my favorite character's arcs (too much...COME ON, we need to see SessMom!), then I'm good with it.
get the little InuKag tidbits you mentioned
It gives me hope for a kiss! *hopes*
I can't wait for the next episode. :)
Me either! I was afraid from the start they'd cut Kagura's death scene, so I'm already a happy bunny...even if it doesn't get an episode all to itself :)
no subject
This. This is what I keep saying. I find it astounding that there's already so much negativity back in the fandom after just... *counts*... good Lord, like five hours?! If you hate it that much, don't watch the rest of the episodes. :/ It took the original anime 167 episodes to cover roughly 35 books of manga (give or take the fillers). You're not going to get every detail you want when they're having to cram 21 books into 26 episodes. Be thankful for what you've got!
It gives me hope for a kiss!
Oh God me too. My mother as well... we said the same things after seeing all of the tidbits. The focus on the InuKag relationship seems much stronger to us than it was in the original series, and this is a good thing.
no subject
The capacity of this fandom to wank that hard in that short a period of time surprises you? :P LOL, okay, okay - I admit, most of the wank I'm aware of is centered in S/K right now...
Oh God me too. My mother as well... we said the same things after seeing all of the tidbits. The focus on the InuKag relationship seems much stronger to us than it was in the original series, and this is a good thing.
I hope the anime team realizes what a chance they have to "make up for" the lack of a kiss in the manga...IIRC, that was the one big hope everyone had a year ago, was that if the anime came back, we'd finally get our kiss. Judging from the shippy aspects of this first episode, I'd say our chances are very, very good indeed :D
no subject
I wouldn't know; I've kept to myself in my little corner of LJ and DA posting my arts and having them deleted as kiddie porn. I stayed out of the mainstream fandom just because I got tired of all the wank and stupidity. I plan to continue keeping to myself with my DVDs and pencils.
...and I have never and never will touch S/K. Just not my cuppa' tea.
I hope the anime team realizes what a chance they have to "make up for" the lack of a kiss in the manga...
Hey, they already put one in the second movie. I'll actually be pretty surprised if they don't add one in to the anime now.
...geez I need to dig through my hard drive and re-upload all my old Inu icons..
no subject
I'm amazed that fandom still wanks as hard as it does, considering we didn't have any new material to fight over for a year and a half, but what can you do - old habits die hard?
The fringes - they are a good place to be :) I am on my way there myself.
...and I have never and never will touch S/K. Just not my cuppa' tea.
Its a curious combination: a pit of vipers and a pit of fantwits. It takes quite the intestinal fortitude to survive both, so I salute those who can.
I'll actually be pretty surprised if they don't add one in to the anime now.
*fangirl squee* OMG I HOPE SO!!!

If nothing else, the red-thread ending shows us that they are really taking a good look at that relationship, not just action, killing and comedic relief.

I might just wait till it’s dubbed. It seems I’m the only one who likes the English version better then the Japanese. I like all their voices in English and hope the same cast comes back. I will be very disappointed if David Kaye doesn’t return.

That is correct - the episodes are being streamed in simulcast from Japan. I know there are links floating around everywhere, or you can just go to hulu.com or shonensunday.com and easily execute a search for it.

While I enjoyed a lot of the canon scenes, I did not like the additional scenes where Hakudoshi steals the shards or Kikyou saving Kouga . The original was important because Moryomaru discovers IY's human night and Jaken reveals that Kagura has told Sesshoumaru where to find Naraku's heart which guarantees Kagura's death. That scene is great because IY will not get out of Moromaru's body and Fluffy says OK I will kill both of them. Sesshoumaru reveals his feelings for Kagura by preventing Jaken from saying that Kagura gave them the crystals which will lead to the heart.( He says enough that Moryomaru figures it out.) Why did they not show SEsshoumaru saving IY. Re: Kouga If the anime had shown the birth of Moryomaru the manga way they would not need to include this fight.Instead they cut Kouga
out of the birth of Moryomaru.
All in all I was impressed. The scene from the Kind Boy and the two Mirokus
actually comes way down the line. I always liked the Kind Boy scene because it shows the actual relation between IY and Kagome not IY abuse of Kagome that is prevalent in both IK and SK. She really is scary and he really is afraid of her.
no subject
...because they need antagonism between the brothers in order to propel the meidou storyline? Let's see how its handled in the next episode, since we know the Inutachi comes rushing up to Sesshoumaru right after Kagura dies, demanding to know what happened. Reactions there might be telling.
no subject
The opening and ending songs were gorgeous. I practically worship DAI; it's great to see them back with new songs. But the ending was a pleasant surprise, although the animation could have done with a little less from the previous anime...
Meh... why is there an outburst of dislike for the Japanese seiyuus? I have to agree with
That being said, I will cut some bitches if any more filler arcs get cut (looking forward to seeing the Hiraikotsu arc, the wounds of shouki and the Kitsune Inn... and they'd better do the final battle properly!)
*deep breathing* That's over and done with.
