Inuyasha: The Final Act | 6 - The End of Mouryoumaru

Finally, someone besides Inuyasha gets to fight! :P

This was another whiplash-inducing episode, but once again, I thought they brought the disparate arcs together in a way that made sense. We start by learning of the demonic tree Yomeiju, which was sealed by Kikyo fifty years ago in order to make it stop eating humans and demons alike. However, it has been revived, drawing the attention of the Inutachi. When they arrive on scene, they realize it is Naraku who revived the old tree, and watch in horror as he uproots it and absorbs it before their very eyes - Shikon shard and all.

Meanwhile, Koga pursues Mouryoumaru, only to find Kikyo and Kohaku instead. Kikyo threatens him, wanting him to give up his shards, which are being controlled by Midoriko's soul. She explains to him that she has joined souls with Midoriko, and they both intend to make the Shikon jewel whole again and purify it, alongside Naraku, in order to cleanse him from the earth. He refuses to give up his shards and leaves, intent on his pursuit.

Meanwhile, the Inutachi are following Naraku, who is also pursuing Mouryoumaru. He taunts the Infant who resides inside, telling him he knew all along of this plan, hatched by the body that holds his heart, to betray him and fortify himself in order to gather the shards of the jewel. As everyone looks on, the two incarnations fight in mid-air, with Mouryoumaru appearing to win when he absorbs the remnants of Naraku's body.

Believing his has won, Mouryoumaru turns his attention to Koga, intent on taking his shards. Inuyasha runs to the wolf demon's rescue, with Kagome insisting they work together to take down the newly-fortified demon. Too late, both learn that their attacks are of no use - Goraishi has no penetrating power, and Inuyasha can't sense the demon vortex in order to use dragon-scaled Tessaiga. As they bicker over what to do, Kagome takes off with Sango on Kirara, intent on finding Kikyo and preventing her from using Kohaku's shard in the fight.

She confronts Kikyo, telling her to have some faith in Inuyasha, as he's been working damn hard to take down Naraku before she has a chance to kill herself and who knows who else in the process. Kikyo scoffs, maintaining that Naraku won't be brought down by a mere blade, but Kagome insists, leaving Sango behind with her brother (whom she refuses to allow to die for such a cause) and Kikyo, as she rides off to see how she can help Inuyasha and Koga.

The two finally come to an agreement, with Tessaiga sucking up the power of Goraishi in order to break through Mouryoumaru's armored shell, at the access point where he's holding onto Koga, trying to dissolve his flesh to get to the shards in his legs. It appears to work, with the shell cracking open...and the Infant takes his turn to scoff at their efforts.

Naraku appears nearby, taunting the being that holds his heart, and reveals the reason why he absorbed Yomeiju - to break the Infant's barrier and absorb him, effectively taking down his enemy from the inside. That's just the sort of sick, twisted plan Naraku would come up with, LOL :P So the Infant makes to escape, and Naraku tells him Mouryoumaru hasn't absorbed the Shikon jewel - for a reason. Because its still under Naraku's control? That's my guess - it wasn't entirely clear.

At any rate, Naraku finishes the job of overtaking Mouryoumaru and trapping the Infant. Kagome rides in to help Koga escape, firing a scared arrow at the bonds which still hold him. Her power, in turn, awakens the ancestors of the wolf-demon tribe, those which vowed to protect Koga as soon as he let go of the unnatural shards, and he escapes, injured by alive.

With Koga out of the way, Miroku takes aim, opening the Kazaana in order to finally defeat his enemy. The animation of this was really nice, and it was great to see someone else take charge, besides Inuyasha, in a battle situation. Of course, most of what he's sucking in is miasma, and it becomes so terrible that he bleeds from his eyes and mouth, as well as the wind tunnel scar on his hand. He manages to take the Fuyoheki from the Infant, which allows Naraku to completely reabsorb his heart, but Inuyasha stops Miroku before he kills himself.

There were some really great Mir/San moments there at the end, as Sango rushes to his side, and Kikyo reveals how deep the lines of shouki have drawn into Miroku's body ~ almost to his heart. A few seconds longer, and he would've died in his efforts - not only to break his own curse, but to save Sango the heartache of watching her brother die. *shiver* Very powerful stuff.

The episode ends with Kikyo promising to attempt to purify Miroku and help him live.

I liked this episode quite a bit; for once, the snappy pace seemed to work in favor of all the battling going on. And the battle felt a lot more balanced - it wasn't just Inuyasha swinging his sword while his cheering section looked on; instead, Koga, Miroku, and Kagome also got in on the action. It was more of a team effort, which was great to see - especially since it was representatives from different groups coming together to fight against a common enemy.

The animation was impressive in a few different places. THe clouds of shouki were patently gross, killing and skinning skeletons as it drifted out of both Naraku's and Mouryoumaru's bodies. The wind tunnel action was reminiscent of the movies - but still, great to see. And in general, I thought the action of this was well-done. It remains to be seen if the quieter moments can be as impressive as the action-y ones.

Next episode previews: Byakuya goes after Kohaku's shard, which attracts the attention of a most unlikely savior, and the Inutachi and Kikyo begin their ascent to Mount Azusa.

I loved this episode. The directors followed manga and stayed within one episode. The result was great. Kagome shows her loyalty to IY and Koga helping them both with her arrow. You see the doubts creep into Kikyou about her mission. Midoriko would have sacrificed both Koga and Kohaku without a second. Kikyou does do a great flop off cliffs. The action was great at all times. The scene at the end was poignant. Sango is begging Kikyou whom she hates for Miroku's life. Mount Azusa is great. Kagome gets a great test. We will see what happens. They do show Sesshoumaru saving Kohaku from Byakua who
everybody attacks on site even he does not actually attack anyone.

I think they are cutting out quills even though it is great MS action because Miroku resists opening his wind tunnel which Kikyou told him would kill him.
Spider Webs which starts Kikyou's death spiral begins after Quills. I doubt if they will show Naraku going to Mount Hakurei to take back his humanity. Naraku uses the webs to convey his hatred to Kikyou. Once she is touched by the webs she is good as dead. From Webs to Light is one day. It took 13 weeks for Kikyou to die. Worthy of any western. I hope they show the scene where Kagome is infected and sees Kikyou's last moments trying to hug IY. IY has a great remark when Kagome will not ride with because she found him with the dying Kikyou. She remarks that maybe she is tainted. IY says that he cannot tell the difference between her pure and her tainted.

I liked this one, too. I actually thought it was a lot less whip-lashy than the last couple - maybe because I'm getting used to it? LoL. Probably it just seemed more cohesive, despite so much going on. I didn't quite get the Naraku-shard-control thing either, but enough that I realized that Mouryoumaru was screwed, lol. And the Mir/San moments were wonderful! Although my heart stopped a little when Kikyo said he would be affected permanently - which is silly, because I obviously know he's just fine in the end, but I don't remember that bit from the manga and/or what it does mean.

Anyway, I'm excited about Sesshoumaru coming back and the whole Mount Azusa bit. I'm starting to wonder if we will see the Hell arc though. D:

This is the catalyst for all of the Mir/San angst from here on out - Miroku sucks up so much poison that he's hovering on the brink of death each time he opens the wind tunnel.

*headdesk* Okay, I knew that. I guess it made me so unhappy that I blocked it out of my mind. They don't take the time to say whether getting rid of the Wind Tunnel cures him or not in the last chapter, so it just was a series of D: moments that was never really resolved (not enough for my neurotic self anyway - unless I'm forgetting something else... it's been awhile, lol).

I've got my fingers crossed, if only because the Hell arc is pivotal to the sword upgrades still to come.

Yes. Keep hope alive! :D

Kikyou tells Miroku that she cannot cure him of the miasma and that it will kill him eventually. Miroku tells her to lie about it so that no one will realize that he is dying. She actually lies to IY about it for Miroku and he does not believe. Not a lot of trust between despite what Kagome thinks.Koga is great telling Kikyou "see ya" and walking between Kikyou and IY.

Next episode previews: Byakuya goes after Kohaku's shard

I'm sorry, what? No, don't tell me, I don't need to know. Just when I hear Byakuya, I think of Kuchiki Byakuya from Bleach. *points at icon* I was just having a "canon crossovers, WTF?" moment. Carry on.
