If you guys would be kind enough to at least click on the URL and let me know if my story disappears from FF.net, that would be much appreciated.
So, yeah, my new-old fandom is this little show called Kids Incorporated, which ran in syndication, and then on the (then-premium) Disney Channel from 1984-1993. It was in reruns until the mid-90s, which is when/how/where I became so familiar with it.
Obligatory resource post - here you can find out more info about the characters, episodes, and even what (little) fandom has existed for this show.
Mostly this fic is me rewriting Season 5 of the show. Season 5 is full of shippy goodness, even if its never actually dealt with directly onscreen. It was also Ryan's last season, and he was the first in a long line of characters to be written off without a proper farewell (aka, a mention in the next season about why he left/having to replace him). These were the two issues I wanted to tackle, and the direction my head-canon just naturally turned...because if even I can pick up on subtext, you know its pretty damn blatant, LOL.
Even though I'm more or less rewriting this season from scratch, I have thrown in some references from the episodes preceding (and following) the one I'm ultimately basing my story on. That particular episode is #11, "The Open Book," which just happens to be one of the few up on YouTube =) I'd suggest watching it first, so you understand exactly how this fic will diverge from it, if you're at all interested in background information...
A couple of things to keep in mind, even if you don't watch the episode:
[+] The season was filmed in 1988, which is what I'm using as the point of reference in canon - therefore, this story takes place in 1988, with all the resultant technology/pop culture references.
[+] As such, any fashion and/or music may be appropriately hilarious and/or tragic. I'm writing this with my sense of humor about me, so chances are, if you find the reference amusing, it was meant to be :P
[+] Character ages, especially Stacy's, have been hotly disputed within the fandom, but I've basically taken the ages from Season 2, when Ryan first appeared, as my starting point. Stacy was 9 then, Ryan approximately 12, hence the "aged up" three-year difference.
[+] All the songs referenced in the fic were actual covers performed by the band on the show in this season (so - there's the method behind the madness on that).
[+] If folks are interested, I'll keep a running tab of references from future chapters and post them along with any meta-style author's notes.
I was excited when I went to post this at FF.net, thinking they'd answered my request for the category and/or list of characters when I realized that both were magically there :D However, upon running over to my email to get the fic link, I instead found an email from FF.net staff, saying they wouldn't create the category because the characters and actors shared the same first names, which made writing fic for them RPF and thus, against the rules. I'm not about to tell them the category is already there, LOL! But I'm afraid the fic is going to disappear without explanation, which would suck :( If it does, I'll probably just repost in the Misc category, or I'll put it in my IY fic comm here at LJ.

(And... Black Eyed Peas, huh? I see what you did there.)

The episodes are like crack (and some of them are crack, if your surrealism meter is broken), and the ship is enduring because of all the RL stuff that happened behind the scenes. Plus the music isn't half bad, either!
(And... Black Eyed Peas, huh? I see what you did there.)
LOL :D You watch enough of this show and you're able to separate 'Stacy' the character from 'Fergie' the...entity. Same with all the others, really. That kinda adds to the humor, when you realize just how different the real people were (and are) from their fictional counterparts :P

Oh? This makes me curious. Well. Curiouser.

Well, the age difference is probably more than enough to help establish that difference, especially with how different what's considered "stylish" now is from the 80's. But it definitely adds to to the amusement factor.
And GAH I somehow have "My Humps" stuck in my head now. omgitburnsgetitouuuut...

I don't know if I'm up to that o.O I have to admit, I've kinda liked being something of a "fandom of one" over here ~ there's nobody else to worry about pleasing, other than myself.
And crack is good. Very good.
Some of the earlier episodes, especially, make you wonder just what the writers were smoking. There were a couple download-only eps that I snagged where I was pretty much either D: or WTF?! the whole time, LOL.
(Between this and Instant Star, you seem to like musical shows, lol!)
Knowing this was my favorite show when I was a kid should make my fascination with Instant Star come as no surprise :P I love music, maybe as much as I love reading/writing, so its only natural I have a soft-spot for these sorts of shows. Plus they play a good deal of "oldies" on this show, which is the music my parents listened to (thus, the music I listened to), so that was a bonus =)
There's something about music that just grabs me. I play a few different instruments myself, but I've never been able to write music or improvise very well *shrug*
Oh? This makes me curious. Well. Curiouser.
LOL. From what I've seen, speculation about this makes up a good portion of the remnants of fandom, so its not like its hard to satisfy that curiosity :P
join join join you know you want to mwahahaha!the age difference is probably more than enough to help establish that difference, especially with how different what's considered "stylish" now is from the 80's. But it definitely adds to to the amusement factor.
If not for the fact that she's made it so big? I'm sure there wouldn't be nearly as much material on the show on the internet as there is today. Just going by YouTube comments, it seems most people only want to swing by to marvel at the fact that yes, that cute little blond girl grew up to be ZOMG Fergie!!
And the cognitive dissonance I had when I realized who she was (because I've always known her as Stacy) was, indeed, rather painful :P But its quite easy to set aside - the actors are definitely not playing themselves, no matter what FF.net mods seem to think :P

LOL. Won't stop us from reading though, bwahahaha! :D (Seriously, I have no reason to be excited about this. I'd never even heard of this show until I saw your new icon. XDDD)

Well, considering it's the 80's we're talking about? Could be any number of things!
join join join you know you want to mwahahaha!
*points up* What was that about liking being a fandom of one?
But its quite easy to set aside - the actors are definitely not playing themselves, no matter what FF.net mods seem to think :P
I can totally believe that. After all, it's not like I think of couch!jumping every time Tom Cruise shows up in a movie. And this really makes me wonder if they allow fanfic for stuff like The Bernie Mac Show or Everybody Loves Raymond. Because, well... seems like much the same principle, where the leads share their names with their character, but they're still acting.

Rest assured, I certainly won't mind having someone to squee with :D LOL, I've been doing a fair amount of squeeing to people who more or less just tolerate it and humor me; I'm waiting for them to be like "STFU already"...so if I can entice someone to join me of their own free will? All the better!!
(Seriously, I have no reason to be excited about this.
Fangirl squee is infectious? :D
I'd never even heard of this show until I saw your new icon. XDDD)
This is the original picture - OFFSTAGE, mind you <3 LOL, just read the comments to it and you see how much everyone speculated...!
(And I have tons more icons that I made but currently have no room for...because yes, I am in that deep, LOL!!)
What's hilarious is that, even though this pretty much universally acknowledged as the "ship" of the show, so many people were against it. I linked to a crazy shipper essay in my resource post, and it is a must-read for the lulz!!

LOL. Well, I'm the queen of being
willinglysuckered into new fandoms - or at least watching/reading the original. I'm currently working my way through MMPR, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the FMA manga. Earlier this year it was Dollhouse... BUT THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE!Fangirl squee is infectious? :D
Consider me officially unwell.

I did read it... and you're right. Definitely lulzy! :) Someone was feeling a bit peeved at their fandom. With logic and evidence like that, she must have had hordes of people coming to see the light~~~! ...Or maybe not.
FF.net, you hypocrites
Uh, newsflash?

*cheers*
I'mma be in this one for a good long while, I suspect, even if its just me and a bunch of YouTube videos and websites. This show brings me so much joy its unbelievable <3

She is the type of wankbait I am attempting to avoid (which is why it sucks that she's the only other person with fanfic still posted on these here interwebz). She was over on the IMDB boards pitching a monumental fit because someone had asked about Aris's site (the KidsInc.us one) and not hers.
I basically just backed away slowly, LOL. Aris seems pretty cool (though he didn't acknowledge the gushy email I sent about how much I love his site :P) but her? She pings my batshit radar something awful.
Uh, newsflash?
I could've lived my whole life without ever knowing someone wrote Bill Nye fanfic, tho.

I absolutely hate it when characters are written off without explanation! I heard a term, that now slips my mind (of course), spawned by some character that was written off of The West Wing that's now used rather regularly. My reaction to that - there should be no regularly used term! There should always be explanation! :P
Anyway - 80's hair! 80's clothing! Hee. That kinda gives me giggles. But it looks like a cute show, despite not recalling much more about it than the title. ;)

Thanks for your review! I totally almost squealed when I checked my email, LOL. (I review-replied via FF.net.)

I know! And it was really disconcerting, because until that point, every kid had been at least given a throwaway explanation as to why they were gone, and every season that new kids appeared, there was the obligatory "audition" episode. Not that there's a lot of room for storytelling in this show (because they pack five songs into a 22-min episode o.O), but what little there is actually made sense for the first five seasons, LOL.

This episode is actually the shippiest (that opening number is the culmination of the Ryan/Stacy ship, in fact) and has some of the best outfits of the 80s-era seasons. LOL, you want to see hilariously tragic? You should watch season one or season two episodes. I'm talking sequins. And headbands.
On the boys.
I have gotten more laughs out of some of the outfits than I probably should have, LOLOL.
But it looks like a cute show, despite not recalling much more about it than the title. ;)
It is really adorable, and actually very witty, especially as the characters age a little (though the Kid is at his sassiest in Season 2, I think). Despite its dated look, it holds up fairly well =)

Lmao. Wow. It reminds me of this kids' workout VHS I got for a birthday - Scott Baio was in it, haha - and it had scads of neon yellow, pink and green spandex. Leg warmers on guys. Lots of hilarity! I think laughing is the way we deal with our past fashion mistakes. :D
Despite its dated look, it holds up fairly well =)
Seems like it would! Better than a lot of 80s stuff, I would imagine.

I'm just glad I wasn't old enough to have fashion sense in the 80s, truth be told. That way I can look back and laugh without guilt, LOL.
Seems like it would! Better than a lot of 80s stuff, I would imagine.
Part of the fun of being back in this fandom is finding it unintentionally hilarious, and being able to laugh at some of the outright bizarre and/or over-the-topness of some of the 'fantasy' sequences. The show is very formulaic, so it almost becomes a sport to see how they're going to top themselves.

Or, at the very least, laugh at our parents' poor fashion sense for putting us in that stuff. I had stirrup pants - 'nuff said. :P

The show is a lot of fun, great for a laugh, unintentional or not :P
And yes, I am definitely having fun =) Its nice to have something that just automatically lifts your spirits when you see it, know what I mean? Writing fic feels kinda like an honor, giving back a bit to the characters that made my childhood bearable :P
