Oh, Miroku and Sango. They definitely set the standard for "angst-filled" in IY. In comparison to a lot of the rest of the show, they have a far more adult-level relationship with adult problems. It's never surprised me that fanfic for them has kept with that deep complexity.

I still had a girlish squeal when I found out they both survived the final battle, of course. :D
