Still feeling pretty shitty, but I'm working a bit on the next chapter of Stacy in Bloom, which is making me all sorts of happy :) Its a tough one, but the muse finally seems to be coming around, so *crosses fingers*

Day 09 - The most believable relationship?


Jonathan Creek/Maddie Magellan, BBC's Jonathan Creek - These two are the stars of the first three seasons of the quirky BBC mystery series Jonathan Creek. He is a magician's assistant, a brilliant man who thinks any way but laterally and designs all sorts of feats of illusion for a self-serving American magician, Adam Klaus. She is a freelance investigative reporter who stumbles onto seemingly impossible-to-solve mysteries, and blackmails Jonathan into helping her solve them (at first - then she just railroads him into it, LOL).

As the series progresses, these two become closer, and its obvious there's something there beyond good-natured friendship. It's never rushed or pushed, though - its entirely natural, and its wicked good fun, considering Maddie's sharp tongue and Jonathan's innate ability to drive her bonkers with his leaps of logic. They do eventually get together, and then decide they're better off friends ~ which is far more realistic than the way most relationships on TV go.

I like a lot of things about this ship, including the fact that they're friends first (and foremost), and that neither one of them are tall, thin, gorgeous specimens of humanity, too perfect for themselves, much less each other. Each of them has their flaws, and its those flaws that ultimately draw them together. The BBC had a brilliant run in the late 90s/early 00s with shows like this, with real-looking people in real-feeling relationships doing realistic jobs, no matter how outlandish they read on paper.

It's a wonderful series, and Jonathan is one of my favorite characters *ever*, so I encourage you to check it out - the first three seasons are available on DVD and (shhh!) YouTube, if you're interested.

Looks very interesting, and the fact that you consider it the most believable is also bonus. ^_^

Its an amazingly good show, and Jonathan Creek is one of those quirky characters you can't help but like, even when you hate him :P Maddie is just awesome, hands down. The show wasn't the same without her.

Now I feel astonished because everyone has like a million fandoms and I am like no way there's so many...

I look at it this way: I don't have to be "in the fandom" to have ships or care about the characters. I actively fangirl very, very few of the things I actually enjoy. Most of the shows/books I'd never write for, because I was satisfied with the canon and the conclusion (if there is one). Only when I feel the urge to rewrite the ending, so to speak, do I delve into fanwork.

Mine are all childish, anyway.

You can't get more childish than a kid's show from the 80s, so that's no excuse :P

Hehe. I love Jonathan and Maddie - separately or (semi) together. :D She's so snarky! It's awesome. It has been awhile since I've seen any of this show - I should go back and watch it (probably on YouTube, lol).

I adore these two! (And I found a wonderful fanfic for them, too, when I wasn't looking, LOL.) I remember watching this show back in the day on BBC America, before they yanked it in favor of Gordan Ramsay (WTF?) When it *finally* came to Region 1 DVD, I had to own it. Now I have my Jonathan fix whenever I want, LOL.

LoL. I know people who adore him, but I don't get him. His constant yelling and anger - even when completely justified - just make me feel uncomfortable.

The original version of his show? Is pretty awesome, I have to admit. I really hate that they changed it for the American market (ramping up the whole "yelling like the owners are fucking imbeciles" aspect), and when they show one episode of each version back to back, the differences are pretty stark.

All in all, though, I'd rather see more British drama-created-for-British-TV than reality stuff. It's not better just because it has an accent :P
