Meta meme: 30 Days of Shipping
I'm pretty pleased that, for as shitty as the day has been, I managed to work out two very crucial conversations for the next chapter of my KI fic :) Maybe the muse is finally clicking along on something again? Goodness knows I've missed it.
I'm going waaaaaay old-school for today's meta meme - cookies to anyone who recognizes this one :)
Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?

Archie "Snake" Simpson/Christine "Spike" Nelson, Degrassi Junior High/High/TNG - Degrassi Junior High was the original teen drama series, back in the 1980s. It was very special in its own way, because it was shot using real kids (not actors), and, IIRC, it was short in a more documentary-style than merely slick, scripted TV. It wasn't a reality show, but it was far more real than the other 'after school special' type kids shows of the day. It was the first to talk about very controversial subjects (including teen pregnancy, homophobia, death and suicide, and AIDS), and it was censored or outright banned in the US because of these sensitive topics. It was co-produced in Canada and the PBS affiliate out of Boston.
I remember, very vaguely, watching some Degrassi in the early 90s on PBS, but I didn't really get into this show until the latest version of it, Degrassi: The Next Generation, started airing as the star vehicle of The N, Nickelodeon's teen channel. I wasn't really that into the new version, but they reran the original Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High episodes in full a few times, and I was totally hooked. (I guess I have a thing for 80s shows? LOL) I think I have both series complete on tape somewhere, and I have Degrassi High on DVD.
ANYWAY, I was always a fan of this pairing - he's a dork in a rock band, she's a rebel who became a single mother in high school. They're friends for most of the series, by at the end, things come to a head between them...only for the series to end right after. Luckily, both were back on the latest reboot, and three seasons in, they finally got hitched :) I definitely watched that episode, LOL, even if I didn't care for the new tween set.

Re: er...
It also repeated on The-N...geez, 10 years ago? o.O Hard to believe its been that long. I remembered the original Degrassi, so the reboot wasn't much of a shocker - but it was nice to revisit the original characters :) Joey Jeremiah and Caitlyn Ryan were a big ship from the original Degrassi Junior High & Degrassi High that also had a second chance in TNG.
I think you just have to be the right age/mindset to get into these shows. As my nostalgia trips have proven time again and, it's really a "you had to be there" kind of thing! :P

LOL, don't be too hard on yourself - you were just a kid in the 90s, after all :) Besides which (reply to next comment), the first seasons are up in the entirety on YouTube, so have all the 80s kitsch you want! :P
I don't watch much TV, either...except for what I'm searching for on YouTube, apparently. I don't think anybody thinks the kids' shows of today are as great as the ones from their own childhood, whatever those shows may be :P

I think the original Degrassi Jr High/High series lasted for five seasons...all of 'em are on DVD if you want to hunt them down :)

It's cool that they brought back old favorites and actually had them end up together. Happy endings are a dying breed, I think. ;)

(Degrassi High episodes are also available, but they are 'unauthorized', LOL - happy hunting! =))
Happy endings are a dying breed, I think. ;)
Noooo kidding ~ but that leaves us room for fannish exploration, so I suppose I shouldn't gripe too loud, LOL :P

That *is* awesome. I sometimes feel bad for stealing stuff that isn't out on DVD or whatever, but if they're not going to make it available for purchase *anyway*, I might as well bend copyright a little. :P
I suppose I shouldn't gripe too loud
Hehe. No, we shouldn't. On occasion though, I'd like to leave a show with happy, warm feelings, instead of immediately searching out fanfic to get them. But! That is what keeps us going. ;)

I'm just the opposite - I feel bad if I know I can buy it somewhere...but if I can't? I hoard like there's no tomorrow, LOL.
All of the original Degrassi series are on DVD, so it's even more awesome that PBS released one of the seasons in full on YouTube. At least you know it's not going anywhere anytime soon :P
On occasion though, I'd like to leave a show with happy, warm feelings
*nods* Totally understand what you mean. For the vast majority of shows/books/movies I enjoy, I don't feel the need to delve into fandom for a fix. Maybe that makes me weird, I dunno, but its certainly easier than trying to keep up with so many different things at once! :P
