Meta meme: 30 Days of Shipping
Here's hoping LJ doesn't decide to eat this post like it did the last one o.O Talk about a long-buried ship...
Day 19 - A pairing you've rooted for since the beginning?

Trent Lane/Daria Morgendorffer, Daria - Oh, man, I was in it from the start for this one! =) I *loved* this show, and I loved the character of Daria ~ I could completely relate to her brutally realistic view of teenager-hood and life, in general. People called me Daria in HS, but then, I also fine-tuned the art of sarcasm back in day :D
For me, the most enduring ship of the show was also the first (another pattern I've apparently developed): Daria's crush on her best friend's older brother, Trent. Trent was sort of the epitome of slacker cool, but he wasn't a loser, so much as...misdirected? In the later seasons, he and Jane have some development that's quite telling: as independent as the Lane siblings are (and as jealous as Daria and we the viewers sometimes are of their freedom), they crave the sort of order a stricter household would've given them. When they pushed boundaries as kids, nobody pushed back. And that lead to a little stagnated emotional development, someone emotionally blunted as Daria could find attractive and potentially safe as a way to explore romantic feelings.
I wish these two had gotten together, although it was pretty obvious as the seasons went on it would always be a 'woulda, coulda, shoulda' sort of thing instead. No, instead, the writers decide to bring on another character, in the form of Tom Sloane, who was first Jane's boyfriend. In fact, Daria breaks Jane and Tom up, though she feels horrible about it. I just never cared for this storyline, because not only would betrayal go against the very grain of Daria's and Jane's tenuous friendship, but it also made her look weak, unable to find a boyfriend without going through someone else first. Bleh! I don't think Jane would've minded if Daria had pursued her brother instead :P
Daria fandom exists in large part on the interwebs (wiki!), and a few years ago I went on the prowl for some fic - and I found an *awesome* Trent/Daria fic over at Outpost Daria - the "Daria Continuum" by Diane Long. Even though I haven't read that story in probably years (that was many moons and a screenname or two ago), it's stuck with me all this time, because it's so very well done, and explores more than just the immediate romance between the pairing - it also encompasses their families and friends' lives, and how each (even Quinn) come together in the end to help push the story towards its eventual conclusion. For once, fandom satisfied me on an 'ultimate canon ship' level =)

I pretty much stopped watching Daria when Tom showed up. Though, this changes now that I have the complete series.
I might go read that story then...
(Of course I always sort of shipped Daria/Jane more, but that's just me...)

*nods* It was a HUGE miscalculation, I think - the show was definitely not the same in season 5. I think I originally stopped then as well, but I did eventually see it all the way through...and of course ordered the complete series as soon as it was available for pre-order :P

You are hardly alone in that regard :P I never got into it, because I never thought their friendship had a sexual edge, but *shrug* Just my opinion, of course. I wasn't surprised a jot when I discovered the fandom and saw so many people who shipped it, LOL.

Honestly, I don't remember a lot of the show so rewatching it has really been helping.

I'm just sad that they couldn't retain the rights to the original music, because I thought it added quite a bit to the show. Ah, well. It's nice to just have the uncut episodes available after so long, and so much speculation that it'd never happen.

Well, the series is out on DVD now...but there's always YouTube, too :P
I was far too geeky to be considered Daria-like, but I kinda aspired to it, lol. Sarcasm was always my favorite weapon, at least!
*nods* I'm not really sure how Daria-like I was, aside from the caustic humor and depressing sense of reality. I've certainly become far nerdier as I've aged, but otherwise? Yeah. Making amusing (silent) observations about life in general is, like, my favorite sport.
I probably would have died and gone to heaven if there was a single guy as cool as Trent in my school though. :D
I know what you mean...I had my own long-term crush in HS, but the guy was no Trent, I'll say that much :P

Nooooooo! Stop tempting me! I have too many series to watch and books to read as it is. Unemployment is the only reason I'm making any headway at all, lol.

See, my observations are usually loudly made with meaningful looks in the directions of the offenders. This *might* be the reason that no one thought I was cool enough to be Daria-like. :P
the guy was no Trent, I'll say that much :P
We all have to take a step down from Trent. LoL.

Mwahahahaha...*evil grin*
See, my observations are usually loudly made with meaningful looks in the directions of the offenders.
Sometimes I wish I had more nerve to say the things I think, and sometimes I'm thankful I don't :P

However, I did catch some later shows...
When Daria broke up Tom and Jane, I just had to drop the show. I was so disappointed. Just, no.

WORD. I hated that particular arc, and how much in influenced what was to be the final season of the show. I suppose I could say I could see why Tom and Daria would find each other attractive (especially after Daria got over her jealousy of having to share her time with her best friend with him), but the whole overarching "best friend's boyfriend" thing just - ugh. Totally destroys it.

But after he had his 'almost growing up' moment in IICY, there's a lingering hope that he may yet become a productive member of society.

And there is a cute little Daria/Trent get together fic on ff.net called Welcome to the Dollhouse. I read it, and just had to go, "Awwwwww." It was just that sweet.
And, didn't Tom just seem like they were running out of ideas, and just had to add some kind of IDK, "She needs a boyfriend, but we don't want her with Trent, so let's just make up a new guy... and let her and Jane duke it out over him."?

I know I've heard of this fic, but I'm not sure if I'd read it...I'll haveta check it out :)

Yes. I kinda hated that they felt the need to give her a boyfriend at all, truth be told. Not saying she didn't deserve one, but it's like they picked the worst possible candidate o.O
