Meta meme: 30 Days of Shipping

The next chapter of Stacy in Bloom is clicking along, and looks like it might actually be somewhere in the neighborhood of 3K words. I'm not sure whether to be happy (that its almost done) or disappointed (that it's not a mega-beast like the last few chapters have been). I guess we'll find out when its done :P

Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?

BSC slash - One of the things that makes me shy away from BSC fandom online is the sheer amount of slash. This makes me sound like a bad person (like I don't like slash), but that's *really* not the case. The reason I object to it is more of a 'this is perverting my childhood' thing. (Pathetic alert here.) When I was a kid, I didn't have many actual, physical friends, and certainly none in my neighborhood (our development was fairly new back in the day). So my friends were only people I saw at school...and the characters I found in media, especially books. The BSC constituted my friends for a good part of my childhood, so I hold the characters - and the series - in very high regard. I never saw slash-y subtext in the books, and in a way, I think it's missing the point to pair the girls together. The girls were best friends, a bond it is quite difficult for young girls to make with each other, and I thought the series was a great example of how to have and maintain good, solid, female friendships. That's very rare, even in the world of girl series fiction (Sweet Valley or Gossip Girl, anyone?).

So, while I don't personally like BSC slash, pretty much all of the rest of identifiable fandom does (either the girls themselves, or some of the kid clients), and that's great - I'm just afraid its one point on which we'll never agree.

Once again, I'm totally with you, chica. I have no problem with slash relationships when they make sense, but most fandoms - especially ones from our childhood - were written without it being anywhere *close* to on their minds. We settled into those worlds years ago and got familiar with how they worked - making slash fic out of that just rattles something that was pretty intent upon not being that at all.

Also, I firmly believe in the Kinsey scale, but no one wakes up and says, "Alright. Gay for today!" Please! I need some logical progression of why Miroku is suddenly feeling up Inuyasha instead of Sango. Justify it! *sigh*

Good luck on your chapter though! :) Looking forward to it!

there is a large contingent of people out there who love nothing more than to pervert their childhoods. Which, hey, good on them, as long as I don't have to partake

Haha. Yeah... I don't understand that impulse. Maybe they want to adjust it for their maturing outlook on life? *shrugs* It seems like you could do that without making the nostalgic types run for the hills. But whatevs. To each his own and such.

The part I'm interested in is how the pair gets together (and how they maintain it through adversity), not so much all the ins and outs of the confirmation of togetherness.

Exactly. I just need something additional if you're going to make a character that is so far straight into one that is gay, just like I need additional explanation if a character who is part of a canon couple suddenly leaves that relationship for another.

And I think you're doing it *right* if you interested in emotions more than sex. That's a pretty good rule for life in general, actually. :P

hopefully it won't require much major rewriting *crosses fingers*

*crosses fingers with you*

Wow. Fandoms are weird places. I never would have thought to slash BSC.

However...

I could kinda see it if it's written well and if they're older (and NOT with clients). Not interested in reading it, but I could see it being not too bad.

Hmm.

Rule 34 has ruined so many childhood memories. For every person, like yourself, who enjoyed the series for what it is, there are legions who want to hook them up in any possible way.

You know, I try to keep an open mind about just about anything, and I'm sure "anything" can be done right if it were the right author and someone made the effort. But slashing for the sake of slashing... yeah, I don't know if I could handle it for this series. Maybe because it's my childhood and it'd be weird cuz I never considered such things when I read those books.

That doesn't say I wouldn't be curious if like five people recommended me the same story or something, you know? But a whole slew of slash because it's cool and popular and there's not enough peen to satisfy people, well, I just don't think that's gonna hook me into the fandom.

This has been an interesting thread. My childhood was mostly Ghostbusters and Batman. Even at the age of 5, I was slashing. It was pretty obvious to me that Peter and Ray were in love. I think the Ghostbusters and Batman fandoms usually skew a little older, hence some of the built-in homoeroticism. IDK.

Is nothing sacred? What's next? Bestiality between Shaggy and Scoobie Doo. Brady Bunch incest. Of course if you can slash Transformers you can slash anything.
