Woohoo Recommendations!
A handful of recs, under the cut.
Title: Line in the Sand (2010)
Author: ndnickerson
Fandom: Nancy Drew
Universe: Canon
Genre: Angst, Romance
Rating: Y
Word Count: 4,701
Pairing: Ned Nickerson/Nancy Drew
Summary: After Nancy turns down Ned's proposal, she finds they can't go back to what they were.
Why I'm recommending this piece: Sometimes you need a bit of bittersweet angst to fuel your romance, and this story is a perfect example of that. It's set in the mid-sixties, and though the author notes that at the beginning of the piece, she really brings it to life in the details - the description of the cars, the clothing, the songs on the radio. It feels natural, and effortless, and reads beautifully. Ned's character is given some dimension, which is also really great to see. I only have the most basic knowledge of the 'original' Nancy Drew series, but it seemed only Nancy herself was a fully developed character; her family, her friends, and her boyfriend were there to give her shape, not necessarily themselves. Here, Ned flickers to life under the icy numbness of rejection, and he is truly Nancy's equal, his actions having the ability to influence hers. The end of the piece is steamy (hence the rating), and satisfying, giving you a reason to believe that sometimes true love receives second chances.
Title: Bayside Revisited (2006)
Author: fearlessfan
Fandom: Saved by the Bell
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: General
Rating: T
Word Count: 14,552
Summary: Bayside High's Class of 1993 celebrates its 15 year reunion. Ensemble, written originally for the 2008 Yuletide challenge.
Why I'm recommending this piece: This is probably the best piece of Saved by the Bell fanfic I've ever read. It really reads like a natural epilogue to the original series, with characters who have grown since their time at Bayside, and yet who still retain those same characteristics that made them loveable in the first place. We get a peek into each of the main characters' lives - Zach and Kelly, Screech, Jessie, Lisa, Slater, even Mr. Belding has a cameo appearance here :) Life at Bayside might have been idyllic, but for one night, these characters are able to recapture that magic. There are lots of great nods to canon in this beautifully rendered story, and it's a great example of the power of writing in the present tense in order to drive a story forward.
Title: I Want Candy (2011)
Author: rebecca-in-blue
Fandom: Baby-sitters Club
Universe: Canon
Genre: Friendship
Rating: K
Word Count: 1,481
Summary: "She's found a kindred spirit, and all the inspiration she needs." Reading about a famous artist, Claudia discovers something about herself. A Claud-centric one-shot.
Why I'm recommending this piece: This is a great oneshot, exploring all it means to be Claudia. In a day where it seems like nothing is going right, her best friend Stacey comes to her rescue, telling her something interesting that turns a heretofore famous artist into an almost kindred spirit. It's cute, it's sweet, and it's poignant, recalling some of the best Claud moments from the series. I'd love to see more from this writer.
Title: Ducky: The College Years (2006)
Author: Amy
Fandom: Baby-sitters Club
Universe: Post-canon
Genre: General
Rating: T
Word Count: 5,738
Why I'm recommending this piece: Oh, my God. First of all, it's hard to find California Diaries fic (many thanks to
lucida for the heads' up on this one!). It's even harder to find good Ducky-centric fic, but this piece has it all. Not only does the author capture the essence of Ducky's character, but she also totally nails his second-person, slightly manic writing style. That's enough to win me over - but Amy goes one step further, colliding the spin-off world with the original series in a pretty awesome way. Ducky is starting college, trying to learn what it means to be himself away from the friends who got him through high school...and who is his next-door neighbor? None other than Sam Thomas. Be still my beating heart, LOL. This story is amazing, right down to the Pretty in Pink references. It gets everything and everyone right, IMO (though it takes a bit of work for me to completely buy Sam growing up to be a player, it totally works here, LOL).
With the help of the always awesome
lucida, I've managed to give the master lists section of my journal a major facelift. She wrote the code, I modified the color schemes (which was so painful, I'm vowing here and now to never do it again OMFG). But the pain was worth it, because now everything has been organized and prettified! =) Take a look:
