Fandom History & Inspiration Meme - Day 7
Day 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Well. This is sort of a tough question for me, because I don't tend to read fic about characters I don't care for (or about, period). So I can't really say that I've ever read or written a story that makes me go from disliking a character to totally and completely loving him/her/it...but I have read stories that made me go from "meh" to "ultra cool!" For example...
landofthekwt writes an amazing SessMom, and I also really like his take on Kikyo. The little giftfic he wrote for me back in the day is still one of my very favorite Kikyo-centric stories, and his collection of SessMom stories for knittingknots are close seconds =)
I wasn't all that keen on Naraku until I read
paynesgrey's The Unicorn and the Spider, but now I really like the idea of pairing him with Kikyo, even if it's not something I'd write myself. These two have a great love/hate/mindfuck relationship, and nobody writes them better, IMO.
Speaking of IY pairings I'm not all that big on, reading
langus_fiction's Love's Smirking Revenge has made me come around to the idea of Sess/Rin. Granted, this *is* an AU, but still ~ I've never willingly read the pairing before. We've all got to start somewhere, right? LOL.
Beyond Inuyasha, I'm still exploring a bit :) I absolutely love
ozqueen's parent!fic in the BSC fandom, especially her Richard/Elizabeth series. It's pretty much canon for me now, and nearly impossible to consider these characters romantically linked. I definitely like Richard Spier much more after reading her take on him!
And I'd be remiss not to mention the power of
psyco_chick32's Bitter, which she writes with such zeal and passion that she makes me care about characters from a show I hated when I was a kid. And really, I guess that is the clincher for me ~ if you write enthusiastically about your character or pairing, chances are people who happen upon it will enjoy it, simply because you like it so much. Your own joy in the canon will shine through and attract others, even us skeptics, LOL :)

I agree about Richard/Elizabeth - I can never see them as romantically linked. I really do love the idea of them as friends, though.

You're welcome for the compliment! =) I never hated Richard, but I wasn't a huge fan of the way he was written most of the time. Just kinda "meh", really. You gave him some depth, some nice shades of complexity, and allowed him to interact with more than just Sharon or Mary Anne, LOL. Amazing how doing that will open up a character! :P But yes. Your series is definitely my personal pre-canon for them :) I like the way you write the Pikes, too ~ reading 'Ocean' gave me an idea of my own for them which I might write using one of the prompts in my table. It'd be fanfic of the series AND your story, LOL - how derivative is that? :P

I love it when I manage to make someone's "personal canon" :D And YAY, write it! That'd be awesome! :D I posted another Pike fic the other day, actually, and John Pike is trying to hammer another plot bunny into my head. I'm all like, "NO, I HAVE TO STOP WRITING YOU OR PEOPLE WILL THINK I'M... YOU KNOW... FUNNY."

I do, too, on the rare occasions someone tells me I have :) It's like an honor, to know my story blends so seamlessly with the canon, you know? A high compliment indeed :D
And YAY, write it! That'd be awesome! :D
I will, if I can get through some of my other stuff first, LOL! =) Goodness knows I need all the ideas I can get to work towards finishing my table over there... :P
