Fandom History & Inspiration Meme - Day 22

Day 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I've never participated in a big bang. I'm terrible with deadlines (see: the fact that I still owe a [livejournal.com profile] help_japan fic *facepalm* and a giftfic from 2010 *double facepalm*) but mostly it's because there's no way I can commit myself to writing a specified-word-length long story (be it 10K, 20K, or 40K). I never know how long my stories are going to be until I sit down to write them ~ my brain just doesn't work that way, LOL. For instance, I thought Stacy in Bloom would be short and sweet and finished in a couple of months....and now I'm about to hit the all-important 100K psychological barrier. So, yeah. I don't *plan* chapter-fics, they just sort of happen to me, and they take a long fucking time to write.

I also don't really write in a proper fandom to do a big bang - they are all tiny and obscure and OLD. I can only imagine getting an artist assigned to my stuff (because no one would volunteer) and then either not know the fandom or do something silly/lazy/last-minute-generic. I've seen it happen all too often, and yeah. It sucks :-/ At least when I'm playing in my own sandbox, there's no one to disappoint (because there's no expectation for fanart).

The closest I've come on the fest front is probably [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, which isn't exactly an exchange. You can stuff however many stockings you'd like, and it can be with anything: fic, icons, graphics, fanmixes, good cheer. It was fun, and I made a new friend *waves to [livejournal.com profile] summerofsoaps* but my fandoms were relatively obscure so I didn't receive much in the way of things I actually asked for. *shrug* Oh, well. Maybe I'll have better luck this year :) I like [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking because it was very relaxed - you could contribute as much or as little as you wanted, and you had a couple of months in which to do it. It sucked when people I wrote fic for didn't acknowledge it, but mercifully, they were in the tiniest minority. (Most people aren't dicks about getting a gift, at least not in public.) So I guess it kinda evened out.

I'm considering Yuletide this year, but I'm not sure if I'll do it. I'm not the best under pressure, and I'm not all that great at writing giftfics - and Yuletide is notoriously wanky in some regards. Still, the damn thing was designed for tiny, obscure, rare and/or old fandoms, so I feel like I should at least give it a shot one year, you know? Just to say I have. I guess it depends on how crazy busy the end of my year is...but now that there are others writing KI, for instance, I have a better shot at not only being able to write something I'm familiar with/enjoy, but receiving a story in return that I'd love just as much :)

Previous....
Day 1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
Day 2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Day 3 - For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
Day 4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
Day 5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
Day 6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
Day 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Day 8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
Day 9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
Day 10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
Day 11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
Day 12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
Day 13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
Day 14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
Day 15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
Day 16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Day 17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Day 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
Day 19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
Day 20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
Day 21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

Upcoming....
Day 23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
Day 24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
Day 25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
Day 26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
Day 27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
Day 28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
Day 29 – What is your current project or projects?
Day 30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

I'm with you. Those big bangs are really really hard. I don't know how people do them over and over. I could barely manage the one. It was grueling, as if NaNoWriMo isn't hard enough once a year. :|

Good luck with Yuletide if you decide to do it.

It really is insane. I guilt myself into doing NaNoWriMo, like if I ever want to be serious about writing, I should DO this, and I always do original, which isn't as easy as fanfic.

Cheers to do doing stuff around the holidays though. They definitely add to the stress. And I'm always like "Why do I need to see these people (my family)? I should be writing!!"

I'm participating in my first big bang at the moment, and arrrrrrgh! :( I really love the idea behind them, and I do want to finish this one and participate in more, but right now my brain is like, "LOL, NO THANKS, WRITING IS HARD. LET'S THINK ABOUT OTHER STUFF THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING."

Haven't done any exchanges or bigbangs. I tried to do my own quick version of helpjapan because I was afraid of getting behind on them. Always tried to post right away when I got requests.
