Fandom History & Inspiration Meme - Day 22
Day 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
I've never participated in a big bang. I'm terrible with deadlines (see: the fact that I still owe a
help_japan fic *facepalm* and a giftfic from 2010 *double facepalm*) but mostly it's because there's no way I can commit myself to writing a specified-word-length long story (be it 10K, 20K, or 40K). I never know how long my stories are going to be until I sit down to write them ~ my brain just doesn't work that way, LOL. For instance, I thought Stacy in Bloom would be short and sweet and finished in a couple of months....and now I'm about to hit the all-important 100K psychological barrier. So, yeah. I don't *plan* chapter-fics, they just sort of happen to me, and they take a long fucking time to write.
I also don't really write in a proper fandom to do a big bang - they are all tiny and obscure and OLD. I can only imagine getting an artist assigned to my stuff (because no one would volunteer) and then either not know the fandom or do something silly/lazy/last-minute-generic. I've seen it happen all too often, and yeah. It sucks :-/ At least when I'm playing in my own sandbox, there's no one to disappoint (because there's no expectation for fanart).
The closest I've come on the fest front is probably
fandom_stocking, which isn't exactly an exchange. You can stuff however many stockings you'd like, and it can be with anything: fic, icons, graphics, fanmixes, good cheer. It was fun, and I made a new friend *waves to
summerofsoaps* but my fandoms were relatively obscure so I didn't receive much in the way of things I actually asked for. *shrug* Oh, well. Maybe I'll have better luck this year :) I like
fandom_stocking because it was very relaxed - you could contribute as much or as little as you wanted, and you had a couple of months in which to do it. It sucked when people I wrote fic for didn't acknowledge it, but mercifully, they were in the tiniest minority. (Most people aren't dicks about getting a gift, at least not in public.) So I guess it kinda evened out.
I'm considering Yuletide this year, but I'm not sure if I'll do it. I'm not the best under pressure, and I'm not all that great at writing giftfics - and Yuletide is notoriously wanky in some regards. Still, the damn thing was designed for tiny, obscure, rare and/or old fandoms, so I feel like I should at least give it a shot one year, you know? Just to say I have. I guess it depends on how crazy busy the end of my year is...but now that there are others writing KI, for instance, I have a better shot at not only being able to write something I'm familiar with/enjoy, but receiving a story in return that I'd love just as much :)

Good luck with Yuletide if you decide to do it.

Thanks =) The last thing I need around the holidays is more stress, but the fact that I'm already trying to decide if I'm going to throw my hat in the ring probably means its going to happen. I mean, signups aren't until October! :P

Cheers to do doing stuff around the holidays though. They definitely add to the stress. And I'm always like "Why do I need to see these people (my family)? I should be writing!!"

Bleh :( Doing NaNo doesn't make you a "real" writer or even a "serious" one IMO. But my opinion of NaNo is long and complicated and contrary, so we'll leave it at that, LOL.

I KNOW RIGHT. Holiday time is the only time I can reliably take a vacation - if only I didn't have to prove to family that I'm still alive, I could get so much done! LOL :P
This is one reason I like

I saw your request post, and think it's a great idea :) Sometimes working from prompts other than contests helps in unexpected ways!
