Fandom History & Inspiration Meme - Day 23
Day 23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
I post everything in four places these days:
• FF.net: Call me crazy, but I like FF.net. (When it's working, that is :P) This is probably colored by the fact that the 'new' fandoms I get into tend to be for tiny, obscure, and/or old media. FF.net is still the biggest fanfiction archive on the internet, so chances are if people are interested in reading fic, that's where they're going to start. FF.net means eyeballs on your work, and a fairly reliable way to receive reviews. I don't think it's a Pit of Voles, but maybe that's because I tend to hang around the small, quiet corners :) This isn't to say everything FF.net does is a-okay in my book - the user-end redesign was dumb and unnecessary *eyeroll* - but there's enough control and its intuitive that I'm not going anywhere else anytime soon.
The only thing I don't post to FF.net is explicit material.
• LJ: I've posted most of my work at my fic community,
luxken27_fics. It's probably the most organized and easiest to search archive of my work on the web. The stories I haven't posted here are Stacy in Bloom (which is so long that it'd be a nightmare to code properly) and the fills I'm writing for my
babysitters100 table. Those are posted to the comm instead, and it seems a bit redundant to me to post them again when I can just as easily link to that comm in my author's notes posts instead *shrug* I like posting to LJ (again, when it works) because I can control pretty much everything - the look, the order of the posts, the tagging system, etc. I can also control access, but mostly this is just to stay in accordance with the LJ TOS instead of creating an exclusive club :P Anyone can join my comm, provided they told LJ they were at least 18 when they signed up.
There are also a couple of exclusives posts to
luxken27_fics ~ Allegiance, my post-canon non-linear meandering S/K series, and the remnants of Nihon Idol.
• Dreamwidth: This is basically sort of a backup archive of my non-IY works. I'm not as enamoured of DW as some other fen are, but I have one and I poke around. If anything ever happens to LJ, at least I'll have some familiarity with the service most likely to take its place :P
• AO3: I am not all that enthusiastic about AO3, but I'm trying to get more comfortable using it. When I first joined, it was pretty much impossible to post a multichapter story and I ended up deleting my stuff out of sheer frustration. This has colored my view of the archive, though I have started using it again. I don't like the look and I absolutely ABHOR the tagging system, but otherwise, it seems the kinks are getting worked out of the system. There aren't a lot of eyes over there, and even fewer people willing to leave comments, but when they do, it does have a very nice LJ-like feedback system.
I've also posted my Inuyasha works to Media Miner and deviantART, but as I move beyond the anime/manga world, my posting at these archives has declined as well.

Day 1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
Day 2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Day 3 - For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
Day 4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
Day 5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
Day 6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
Day 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Day 8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
Day 9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
Day 10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
Day 11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
Day 12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
Day 13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
Day 14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
Day 15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
Day 16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Day 17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Day 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
Day 19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
Day 20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
Day 21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
Day 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
Upcoming....
Day 24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
Day 25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
Day 26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
Day 27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
Day 28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
Day 29 – What is your current project or projects?
Day 30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

*shrug* Like I said, my initial dealings with AO3 have colored my view of the archive. It's not a replacement for FF.net in terms of traffic, no matter how much the elitists want it to be. I post there because it's there, but I don't post anything multichapter because it's such a fucking hassle, which severely hampers my ability to share my stuff over there.
And I really hate the tagging system. Everytime I post, I have this itch to clean up all the redundant and unnecessary tags, LOL.
But I am well aware that my opinion of AO3 is in the minority, so I don't share it unless asked.

OTOH, I really like AO3! Why don't you like it? I love the tagging system! :p And I love that whenever there's a slight change or event, the people behind it are public about it. (On lj their account is

Considering 85% of my work fits into this category, well. There you have it, LOL. Even IY is quickly becoming outmoded.
I don't generally edit things after I post them to FF.net, but it's a whole helluva lot easier for me to edit things over there than anywhere else. Maybe I'm doing it wrong on AO3, but I still have to provide code for things to look right. And yes, FF.net's war against nonalphanumerical characters is insane, but like I said, I don't approve of everything they do there.
Why don't you like it?
- Posting multichapter work is damn near impossible
- My "customer service" experience was terrible - it took them months to get back to me on the issues I was having posting my work, which is why I deleted it
- The tagging system OH MY GOD. I hate the tags so fucking much, probably because I am militant about tags being useful instead of twee. I *love* the tags at LJ and I love the free reign we have to control tags at LJ, but ugh. The tags at AO3 make it look and feel incredibly unprofessional
- I am not 100% on board with OTW, and it seems like if you don't drink their kool-aid, you're not worth their time. See above, re: my customer service experience
I hate elitism in fandom. I think its unnecessary and pointless, and it seems like the people most adamant about using AO3 lord it over everyone else and look down their noses at people who post elsewhere. Thanks, but no thanks, you know? AO3 wouldn't have half the meager traffic it does have if not for Yuletide, and the archive's handling of that exchange as further soured me on its ability to ever potentially take over FF.net's position as biggest/most travelled archive on the net.
The kudos function at AO3 is just like the Favorites at FF.net, only it can be left anonymously. At least when someone favorites your stuff at FF.net, you have some clue who they are. I like interacting with my readers, so anon comments/faves/kudos don't work for me on the same level that they might for others. I'm glad it's there, but I'd much rather have a way to contact people who are interested in my work. I am here to make friends, LOL!! :P

IDK - I found it easy to post multi-chapter stuff. Have you tried recently? Maybe it's changed since you last had a go?
I agree about the people who use ridiculous tags. It's not tumblr, ffs. Don't use cutesy tags to show your ~uniqueness. There are people who try to fix and group the tags to make them work properly, and whenever I see someone using ridiculous tags over there, I want to punch them.

I have two multichapter stories over there, so yes, I've posted since I deleted my original tries. And no, it's not any easier or intuitive than it was before; the only difference is that now it actually posts...only for me to have to go back and edit something because their preview window sucks. As it is now, I have to copy/paste my formatting code from LJ to even get it to look right to begin with o.O and then I have to go in and add even more code because their system does something funky to my scene breaks.
There are people who try to fix and group the tags to make them work properly
And I still say they could make their lives a whole lot easier if they had people request tags (character names and such) instead of trying to fix whatever the special snowflakes come up with. It's always easier to ask forgiveness than permission, so to speak.

It's pretty much the only place I post to, and when it works, it's pretty great.
However, finding the ways to get it to work can drive me bonkers. And the formatting. The formatting! Ugh. But now that I've come up with my "tricks" to get things to work and understand better the way their functions work, it's gotten better.
I remember how glitchy it could be, too. There were times when I would post and it would just randomly erase spaces between words. Suddenly you hadsentences that looked like this.
But I am glad it's there and free and allowing us to share our stories with one another. :)

I always upload .rtf documents and have never had trouble with the way FF.net formats them, beyond stripping my scene breaks unexpectedly. (Seriously - that is just dumb, and sooooooo infuriating >:( )
Yeah, for all its faults, FF.net isn't as terrible as it could be. If you practice safe browsing anyway, not even the ads are annoying (because you don't see them, LOL!).

I get frustrated with ff.net sometimes, but it's by far the easiest site to find fanfic that I like on... so I doubt I'll ever be abandoning that site! Their flash ads used to bug me to death, but I ended up installing a blocker. :P

Yeah - I use Firefox + AdBlockPlus to browse, period, so I've never had to deal with the aggravation of ads on, well, *any* site (not even the ones in front of YouTube VEVO videos!). I don't know how people browse without a good ad blocker - it would drive me insane, LOL.

I'll buy into "AO3 is so much better" from the fandom types when people start going over there and commenting more, lol.
I guess it all comes down to what's going to get you the most traffic. xD

And, honestly, now that LJ's been DDoSed, I'm expecting FF.net to have sudden problems again o.O It always seems like they break around the same time o.O
