Fandom History & Inspiration Meme - Day 25

Since it appears LJ is back, I'll resume with the meme...

Day 25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Music is an inherent part of my being, so to say it's an inspiration for me is an understatement, LOL :) For as long as I can remember, music has had a very powerful effect on me - it is the way to express happiness, pain, manic excitement, and everything in between :) I love it, even when I hate it. Of all the arts, music is the one I probably have the strongest opinions about (though I mostly keep them to myself these days, LOL). My first forays online where on AOL music message boards. My first long-term crush was on a musician (and my first boyfriend was a musician, though unfortunately, not the same one, LOL). I play several instruments myself, and I enjoy it immensely. I dunno - it's just a part of me, and always has been. Without music, I feel lost, even in regular old run-of-the-mill daily life.

So, of course music plays a HUGE role in my writing. Almost everything I've ever written has been inspired by a piece of music. I think I can count on one hand the number of stories that weren't, and they just don't appeal to me quite as much, for whatever reason. A lot of times when I'm feeling frustrated with my projects and I'm not sure why (as I'm feeling right now, actually), I realize it's because there's no 'backbone' to the story yet - there's not a song. And, generally, when I listen to that song, it instantly transports me into whatever universe I'm writing :)

I do make playlists for my work, if it requires one - I have lists for Fleeting (which I've shared) and Fragments. I had one for Nihon Idol, composed of the songs from the first season of Instant Star in the way that I wanted to arrange them for that fic. I have one for Stacy in Bloom - well, actually, I have a bunch for that story, LOL. But I rarely write long, involved, multichapter fics (mostly because I'm terrible at finishing them, LOL). I also rarely re-use an inspiration song for another story - if I do, it's because I particularly like that song, and it inspires the muse in multiple fandoms.

It's probably no surprise that I enjoy television that has a musical element in it :) Kids Inc and Instant Star present me with a wealth of fun and awesome and amazing win, not only for canon and characters and general squee, but because I love the music so much ♥ I can use the songs from those shows for other works, which only makes me love them even more, LOL.

I do use music to set a mood - 'get the emotions right' - for a fic, and I do play certain songs on repeat or sing/hum them to myself while I'm writing, but, paradoxically, if I hit the zone with my words, I need absolute quiet. When I come to a stopping point or find myself stuck, then I spin the record again, hehe :) I can work with music, but I can't work around any other sort of noise - people talking, obnoxious fans, etc - so I tend to do my best work in the quiet of my own home. I can brainstorm and edit with distraction, but not actually write. Weird, but true *shrug*

Day 2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Day 3 - For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
Day 4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
Day 5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
Day 6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
Day 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Day 8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
Day 9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
Day 10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

Day 15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
Day 16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Day 17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Day 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
Day 19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
Day 20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

Day 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
Day 23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
Day 24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

Upcoming....

Day 27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

Day 29 – What is your current project or projects?
Day 30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

I'm going to attempt to catch up on everyone's journals from the last week or so (my f-list isn't displaying correctly yet, so it might be a manual process, LOL), so if you receive a flood of comments from me, that's why :)

That's so cool that music is such an integral part of your writing. You can definitely tell in Stacy in Bloom. :)
