cottoncandy_bingo prompt "body language."
This was a fic borne of frustration.
This isn't the fic I've been working on for the better part of two weeks, the one that made me so hesitant to dip my toe into this potentially wanky fandom, the one that gave me a crush on 2011-era Mike Shinoda (because what even, brain). I was at a not-so-great stopping point in that story, trying to decide how I could cram in so much backstory without it feeling like an infodump...and when I sat down to think about it, this fic more or less sprang full-formed into my head.
It's an important piece of the aforementioned back story, and I think writing out the scene will ultimately help with my original idea, because now I have something to refer back to. Of course, whilst working on that original fic I had the tiniest inkling of a notion that I could ~actually~ serialize the headcanon I was building - something I am struggling to put the kibosh on, because I really don't have time to explore yet another expansive universe. But we'll see - these
cottoncandy_bingo prompts are taking me places I never expected, LOL.
There isn't much to tell about this fic - its a fairly straightforward piece. The moment in time, recalled as a memory, when Trent and Daria shared their first (real) kiss. It actually fits the prompt better, because I was able to hone in on Daria's body language, which is what Trent found so alluring. She is a woman of few (non-sarcastic) words, and he's a musician who's attuned to others' moods. I tried to tie in relevant bits of canon (Trent is aware of her crush early on in canon; and "Pierce Me" should probably play a bigger role in the Trent/Daria corner of fandom than it does; plus a reference to the whole Tom fiasco, which is where Trent shows that he's more than just an oblivious slacker, at least when it comes to his friends' personal lives), plus a little shout-out to Mystik Spiral, which is actually the centerpiece of the original (longer) Trent-centric fic I was working on.
I wanted to do a little subversive twist on this idea of a first kiss, in that it is actually the meeker partner who exerts control over the situation. Its such a delicate moment, before boundaries are set, in a moment of impulsiveness, etc - that it's Trent who hesitates and Daria who assumes control, if only for a moment. That's what makes it so powerful - even without words, she leaves an indelible mark on his memory, one that quite literally alters the course of his life. Its always the little moments, like this, that have the most effect.
The lack of dialogue was intentional. It forced me to follow through with the intense moment I'd created, instead of taking the easy way out and deescalating the tension. I like how it turned out, and I sorta like that this is my debut fic for this fandom. Usually I like to ease into things - but inspiration like this is so rare that I have to take it while I can.
The title comes from the song "Waiting for the End" by Linkin Park:
This was not what I had planned
It's out of my control
Flying at the speed of light / thoughts were spinning in my head
So many things were left unsaid
It's hard to let you go
I'm looking forward to finishing the other fic (hopefully in one piece instead of many :P), and luckily I have another
cottoncandy_bingo prompt that will fit the new direction of the story. I don't know *when* it will be finished - hopefully before the round is over, in July - but just having even a tiny bit of momentum will help.
I miss writing, a lot.
