Written for the "coolly" prompt on my 2017 Summer Mini Challenge table.
When the Dialogue Fairy starts whispering in your ear, you definitely don't tell her to shut up!
So this fic idea came from my own delirium, I think. I stayed awake for almost 24 straight hours from Wednesday into Thursday of this week. I hadn't slept well the night before, and I wasn't tired in the least when I did finally pack it in, but I couldn't get completely off my sleep schedule, no matter how tempting the idea was at the time. As I lay in bed at 4 am on Thursday morning, I had a little thought about doing a scene with characters discussing their insomnia and/or other inability to get any sleep, and finally did manage to fall asleep while thinking about who I wanted to write said scene about.
I woke up with some choice pieces of dialogue, and sketched out the scene yesterday. I pretty much never am in the good graces of the Dialogue Fairy, so I definitely went with it as much as could, considering how little sleep I actually got yesterday :P
Anyway. I settled on writing a KI fic with the Kid teasing Stacy about her crush on Ryan. Very fun and frothy, with a chance for some teasing jabs between the two. I love their friendship, and I love the idea of it continuing even after their time in the band. They have such an easy way of talking to each other, and a very useful one. Everybody needs somebody who will just give it to them straight, and these two definitely serve that purpose for each other. They both get in some choice cuts in canon, so of course that would continue into my post-canon world.
There is canon context for these two studying together, as that's the premise S3 Ep 10 revolves around:
Given the Kid's lack of good study skills in junior high, I can totally see him as someone pulling all-nighters to get through college. Stacy struggles with her homework in early KI canon, too, so again this is a context where they are well-matched.
So in this story, these two are pulling an all-nighter in their college library before finals. The Kid is studying for a chemistry exam, while Stacy is tackling world history. During an early morning break from their studies, they discuss an upcoming KI reunion that the Kid has organized, bringing the Golden Era castmembers (and Mickey) back into town, basically just because they want to see each other. During said discussion of the reunion, the Kid teases Stacy about her long-held crush on Ryan.
Simple, but fun. I really enjoyed writing this. It basically came together in one sitting. I struggle writing funny stories, so when one comes to me I don't hesitate, I just go for it. Sometimes the humor works, sometimes it doesn't. It is quite rare for me to really enjoy my comedic writing, but I love this one. I can see it playing out so perfectly in my head.
The title is from Season 4, when the Kids perform "Never Say Never" as a closing number. Bonus that it was a Kid/Stacy duet, hehe:
The prompt I used was "coolly," describing Stacy's tone of voice when her side of the conversation gets really serious, really fast.
I love it when I have sudden, random ideas. I wish it happened more often. Its the rare times like these that writing is 100% magic and 0% sausage-making chore :D
