30 Days of BSC | 1: Favorite Sitter

On a mission for the BSC Discord, I came across this old post, for a 30-day BSC meme. Not that I need another excuse to do a deep dive into the canon, but...



1.) Favorite sitter:

Stacey McGill - Far and away my favorite baby-sitter, right from the start. Like most everything about my love for BSC, I preferred early canon Stacey: cool, but different, with a bare hint of insecurity. I liked that she was different, and her illness was diabetes, something I knew quite a bit about, because one of my grandfathers was diabetic, so in a weird way, I felt like I could relate.

I liked Stacey's half-desperation, half-determination to make a fresh start in Stoneybrook, and her willingness to go to all lengths for the club's survival in those early days (the war vs the Baby-sitters Agency). She had a soft and sensitive side, too, like when she's feeling insecure about Claudia in #12 Claudia and the New Girl. I even enjoyed her boy-crazy ways up to a point (I found her infatuation with Scott the Hunky Lifeguard in #8 Boy Crazy Stacey eyeroll-inducing even as a kid). When she was a fully-fleshed character, she was very interesting, with lots of facets.

Stacey is awesome ♥ Needless to say, I was less than thrilled with what Peter Lerangis did to her (my hatred of Lerangis will become crystal clear over the course of this meme, LOL). I might be the only person on the planet who didn't automatically love the "Bad Girls" arc. One of the best parts of the otherwise turgid #88 Farewell Dawn is the scene where Dawn and Stacey are chatting at the farewell party - one girl leaving the club, just as one girl came back.

Gasp! So you're the lone holdout on the bad girl arc. Did I know this? *ponders* Why don't you like it?

I love Dawn and Stacey interactions.

I don't like the Bad Girls arc because it is such a Peter Lerangis storyline that it's dumb. I don't outright hate it - I don't skip the books or anything, and I actually like reading the 'in betweens' when the girls are on the outs. Plus if they had been allowed to age, that arc would've taken place when they were 17 or something, and that sort of teenage rebellion would've made perfect sense, which is interesting to contemplate.

But the girls were becoming too one-note by that point, and the fight was especially immature, and I just don't get the pleasure out of it that seemingly everyone else does *shrug*

Ahhhh. That makes sense. Gotta say, I don't remember too much about the fight but that just means the eventual re-read will be more fun.

It is interesting that Stacey went from being the one most in need of the club (Kristy, MA, and Claud each had other things/people) to being the first one to bounce.
