30 Days of BSC | 2: Least Favorite Sitter

2.) Least favorite sitter:

Abby Stevenson - By process of elimination, mostly. Abby has several strikes against her, IMO:

1) She is a purebred Lerangis creation. Peter Lerangis is my least favorite of the ghostwriters (I don't think the man allows the word "said" to ever show up in his manuscripts; everyone is always screaming or crying or shrieking, usually with mouths full of food), and one of the things I dislike about him the most is his love of stupid puns. Abby is a pun machine, with a wild and crazy/off-the-wall sense of humor. BLEH!

2) She shows up in late-era canon. I was kinda on my way out of BSC the first go around when Abby showed up. When I found out that RS #100 was going to be called Kristy's Worst Idea and would be about the club breaking up, I couldn't bear it. I stopped with #99 Stacey's Broken Heart and didn't go any further. So, Abby only had ~10 books and 2 Super Specials for me (I dropped off reading the Mysteries even sooner than the regular series and Super Specials - I apparently had the first two Super Mysteries but I have no recall of ever reading them until I came back to fandom 15 years later).

3) I didn't win the "Name the Twins" contest. So, okay, I can't hold that against Abby per se, but I was an entrant (I'd been writing Sweet Valley/BSC fanfic for years with twins moving to Stoneybrook and the Liz-like one joining the BSC, while the Jess-like one ran in the popular cheerleading crowd), and my names didn't win. Considering how attached I was to my twin characters, the actual twins turning out to be nothing like them - and having totally different identities - did not make me feel very warm and fuzzy about them. I guess I had a bit of a grudge against them because they weren't the ones I'd been writing into my stories for years before that.

I have learned to appreciate Abby more as an adult, especially as a soccer fan, but she's definitely way down there on my personal list of favorites. I just don't have the connection to her that I have with the others. Even now, reading post-#100 books feels like reading weird AU fanfic to me.
