Day 11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
Glancing at the tags for my fic comm, it looks like drama is my forte, followed quite closely by romance and angst. I really like writing stories that explore the characters I'm interested in, and, especially for longer pieces, that means giving them a problem to solve, or a conflict to resolve. That's my basic definition of "drama" - it's different from just plain genfic because there is tension there that must be addressed.
Angst and romance tend to go hand-in-hand for me. There always has to be a payoff for the agony I put my characters through, and usually that comes in the form of a requited love. (I can't help it - I'm just a big sap, LOL.) Not all of my angsty fics are resolved with an affirmation of love, though - sometimes it's just survival that's enough.
I like trying different genres on for size, and it's probably easier to name the ones I know I suck at. Humor is definitely a weak spot for me. Darkfic/horror is just hard, because it depresses the hell out of me and I definitely don't need any help in that area :P I also suck at writing mystery stories, or the sort of suspense/thriller aspect that comes with that particular genre. I can't write a battle to save my life, either, so that takes action/adventure out of reach, too. I will endeavor to keep trying at some of these, because the stories I work on require them, but I'm generally just not wired to think in these terms. I envy those with the ability to write great battle scenes, humorous fic, or who delve into the darker side of fandom without losing themselves.
