RIP Whitney Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012)

Whitney Houston, star of music, stage, and screen, has died at the age of 48.

Whitney was a popular artist on Kids Inc, with covers of her smash hit songs spanning eight seasons over the course of the show. In fact, the way I found out about her untimely death was when Aris uploaded one of the covers with the announcement :-/ It's always sad when an iconic musical figure dies, but especially so, for me, when it's one that meant so much to my childhood.

SEASON 2 - 1985

SEASON 3 - 1986

SEASON 4 - 1987

SEASON 5 - 1988

SEASON 6 - 1989

SEASON 9 - 1993

I have a very specific memory of her.

When I was six or seven, my dad took me out to run errands with him. It was just him and me having an afternoon together. We got me some sunglasses (so I would fit in with the "cool girls" at recess). They had light purple frames and I thought they were beautiful. Then, he asked for help picking out a new cassette to play in his car.

I knew nothing of music, but he asked if he should get the Whitney Houston album. She was so pretty on the cover, I said yes.

It was a great afternoon with my dad that I'll always associate with her. It's so shocking that she's gone. D:

Whitney Houston meant quite a bit to me because of my college thesis, actually... I illustrated my own version of Cinderella as I'm pretty sure you know already. I ripped the audio from my DVD of the Rogers & Hammerstein Cinderella that The Wonderful World of Disney made with Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney as the Godmother, and I spent almost four months listening to it CONSTANTLY for mood music while I worked. As a result my thesis was greatly influenced by the mood of the music in the movie, particularly "Impossible" which was mostly sung by Whitney.

It's a shame Disney was never able to release a formal soundtrack to that movie... it was something about rights negotiations falling through that kept them from being able to do it. Needless to say the rip I made has been a popular hand-me-down to other people I know who watched that version of Cinderella as kids.
