Every Heart: Background

It all started with Every Heart.

Well, not technically.  I first became aware of Inuyasha when the anime was first released in the States.  I watched a few episodes here and there on adult swim, mostly marvelling at the hotness that is Sesshoumaru.  I didn't become seriously interested in the fandom until late last year, when I was on the hunt for information on the web.  I stumbled onto DeviantArt, and from there, a little fic called Tales from the House of the Moon.

I devoured HotM over the last weeks of December, and it stuck with me for weeks.  Not only was the story epic, it set so many precedents for fanon.  It's practically required reading for any serious study of the Inuyasha fandom.  But more than that, Resmiranda is a really great writer.  The technical aspects of the story were pretty near pitch perfect, and the whole idea - a series of twice-told fairy tales - was wonderfully original.  Reading the work sparked my long-dormant creativity.

There seems to be a lot of good fanfic in the Inuyasha fandom, or maybe I was just lucky to stumble onto the good parts first.  Fanfiction awards also helped me find some wonderful authors to cherish.  Just check out the latest lists from the Inuyasha Fanguild (putting poliltics aside) for some primo stuff.

All of this, plus the imminent end to the manga (which I started reading after viewing most of the anime, and ultimately came to enjoy more), led to the opening scenes of Every Heart.  The most interesting question facing the manga (was), what happens after the jewel is completed and Naraku defeated?  Nobody had yet written it the way I imagined it, so I had to write it myself :)

This was the first serious bit of writing I'd started in almost three years.  I bit the bullet and posted it online, and have had some amazing feedback for it, and I'm forever grateful for the response.  Though the story is pretty well mapped-out, and has a definite ending, I've enjoyed the interactivity of posting it as a work-in-progress.  It's always interesting to see if I'm on the same page as my readers.

Every Heart is my "epic fic", in story if not in length.  It's a general fic; I am actively trying to incorporate all of the major manga characters and keep them in character.  It's a pretty big challenge, but it's been quite enjoyable so far.

To me, there are 3 questions that are drawn naturally from the end of Naraku's saga.  1) What happens to Inuyasha and Kagome?  2) What happens to Sango and Kohaku?  3) What happens to Sesshoumaru?  These are the questions I'm trying to answer with my fic.  Sometimes I find the answers are surprises, completely left field from my original plan.

As I am trying to stay close to canon, there is high doubt the rating for the fic will ever reach "X" at Media Miner, or "M" at FF.net.  The romance at the heart of the story, between Inuyasha and Kagome, is very sweet and tame.  They haven't even kissed yet; it's hard to imagine they would start boinking like bunnies anytime soon.  It's a real feat to work a lemon into a canon-inspired story.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not against the citrus.  I have some rmove into the highest mature rating.  For me, the story is more about their emotional bond than a physical relationship.  After all they've been through, they deserve a happy ending!

Not only have the manga and anime inspired me, but also the wonderful music put together for the TV show and movies.  "Every Heart" is the name of a song by BoA, a soft ballad with some rather relevant lyrics.

If there were many tears falling down
Every Heart would become gentle
If everybody expresses what they think
Every Heart can be satisfied

I was frightened by the never-ending night
So I prayed to the distant stars

In endlessly repeating time
We were searching for love
Because we wanted to become stronger
We look up to the faraway sky

The two of us, smiling, meet here
Every Heart has a habit of receiving its dreams
Sadness has no effect on us
Every Heart gains happiness when it flies

Someday our souls will unite
We will give peaceful approval

In endlessly repeating time
We know why we are living
We go through the nighttime laughing
Both of us are mourning
Yet we walk on

Memories of everything has settled
This is a warm place to be
The stars separate us from the future
We are always so brilliant
So shine

In endlessly repeating time
We were searching for love
Because we wanted to become stronger
We look up to the faraway sky

In endlessly repeating time
We know why we are living
We go through the nighttime laughing
Both of us are mourning
Yet we walk on
