iyfic_contest Week 160 | Power (3rd Place)
Based upon: Manga chapters 283-286, Discarded Heart
Damn! And here I thought my angst muse had let go of me, finally.
I drafted out an important part of the Memento Mori sequel Friday night/Saturday morning, and I thought that was enough to satisfy my angst muse. It seemed to be enough to satisfy *all* of my writing muses, because I've sat barren for the entire weekend, not having the motivation or inclination to work on any of my other stories (and I'm constantly thinking about them, if not actively writing on them).
Needless to say, I really struggled with an idea for this week's theme, and once again I went back to my strength - canon manga. This is more of a 're-telling' than I'm generally comfortable with, but hopefully I tweaked it enough to be satisfying as an original or fresh take on the material.
I was listening to Dave Matthews Band as I attempted to plot out the end of the afore-mentioned Memento Mori sequel, and during the song "Rapunzel", a few lyrics really struck me -- and gave me a specific idea.
I think the world of you
With all of my heart, I do
Push blood through my veins for you
You alone have all of me
I give my world to you
I think the world of you
With all my heart, I do
Push blood through my veins for you
You alone have all of me
From you my strength is so full
Carry your burdens, too
I give my world to you
To you I will be true
I was thinking about the anime episode, "Turning Heartache Into Courage" - which is one my favorite angsty Inu/Kag episodes :) Luckily, it does correspond to the manga pretty well, especially Chapter 286 (which I've linked above). The story is mostly told from Kagome's point of view, as she realizes that yes, she feels resentful towards Inuyasha and jealous of Kikyo - but those are normal human feelings, only signifying that she loves Inuyasha (which she boldly declares before he bursts in to save her). I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the same story from Inuyasha's point of view, and I also thought it was probably a good point in the story for him to realize just how deep his feelings for Kagome truly run. Yeah, it'd take another 300 chapters for him to declare said feelings, but we all have to start somewhere, no? :)
I thought it was an interesting take on the prompt, too; a little power-struggle between the pair as Inuyasha realizes the control he has over Kagome's happiness. I think this incident was definitive in their relationship, and we start to see more Kagome-in-distress after this point (which was disappointing, but another matter).
This turned out with more angst that I imagined :P so I guess the angsties weren't ready to let me go quite yet. Hopefully they will soon, though, because my schoolwork is piling itself to oblivion this week :-/ and I need a positive attitude to face it all.
*sigh*
This is *so* not a good time to be having genius-creativity spurts!
