iyfic_contest Week 164 | Demon in Disguise
It's amazing what inspires stories sometimes. For all the meta I went through over the course of the weekend, I came out on the other side with some clear ideas, and the spigot of creativity opened once again.
Woohoo!
This piece actually came from an idea I had for last week's
iyfic_contest prompt, which was stress. I was trying to think of something fresh for this idea, and hit upon chronicling a day in the life of the put-upon Jaken. Unfortunately, said piece did not materialize in time for the contest, and the idea was too much for a oneshot anyway, most likely. But I really wanted to do something with this part of the Sesshoumaru 'group equation', as I've never really focused on Rin's and Jaken's relationship.
The first thought I had when I saw this prompt was actually, "How fortuitous! I can finish up the Fright arc!" LOL...yeah, that kinda fizzled when I realized there was a lot more to that story than I realized at first glance, and the part I intended to work on only related tangentially to this prompt. So, it was back to the drawing board -- and back to Jaken + Rin.
I like how this idea turned out, because I can actually see this happening. I think Jaken is a closet pushover when it comes to Rin, and he would worry about her even though she wasn't in his presence anymore. One of those "absence makes the heart grow fonder" deals :) By the same token, I think Rin would be clever enough to recognize him even under his disguise, leading to this rather unfortunate misunderstanding.
The Jaken-in-disguise idea came from the anime episode "Jaken's Plan to Steal Tessiaga", but I had to give him a better disguise than that LOL :P He may be no more than a little toad imp, but I think he could handle a successful transformation into a human.
I'm pretty strictly a father!Sess/daughter!Rin person, seeing no realistic romantic implications for them. One of the more popular 'after the manga' scenarios is, of course, Sesshoumaru returning to the village to reclaim Rin when she is of an appropriate age to marry & bear heirs. Personally, I don't see Sesshoumaru doing the very thing he held against Inuyasha for the better part of the manga (that is, creating hanyou children). It's another reason I mostly relegate Sesshoumaru/Kagome into the realm of fantasy as well, even though I like this pairing more.
The inspiration song has been in the news of late, as it was revealed to be about statutory rape. Usually when I list a song as inspiration, I mean the greater meaning of the song via its lyrics or the feelings it inspires in me. It's not so much the case here, as I don't like rape fics and don't generally assign such violent, degrading tendencies to my characterizations. But, two lines in this song struck me and kinda highlighted the one-sided emotion I hoped to convey in this piece:
I know you depend on me like a young thing would to a guardian / I know you sexualize me like a young thing would [and I think I like it]
Even though it ends on a bittersweet note, I don't feel like this piece is as depressing/angsty as some of the stuff I've been churning out of late. Same for my latest
dokuga_contest prompt piece, which most people would probably cry over - but I smiled when I finished. It was a nice feeling of accomplishment, and actually inspired me to write this one straight afterward.

I know she would be considered of age much younger than 18 - I was trying to make a point by picking that age, in that he wasn't coming back for her because it had been so long.
As for the other girls having no room to talk - they were just being concerned, with no ill intention.
I don't think Rin will give up hope, either, just because Jaken told her of this...but I do believe she would be upset if she thought Sesshoumaru betrayed her. This piece was meant to focus on Jaken and Rin's relationship, not on one or the other's relationship to their leader.
