~*~
The last thing she remembered, she was enjoying the pleasant buzz in her head as she gyrated around on the dance floor. The lights were a touch too bright, the music a shade too loud, but nothing she couldn’t handle. Besides, she had fabulous friends who were looking out for her, right?
Not so much.
She woke up and found herself against a cold shoulder. She was being carried somewhere, arms wrapped around her as if she was a small child riding on her mother’s hip. Ugh, she thought, swallowing hard. I feel sick.
“Don’t even think about it,” a voice said crisply. “You puke on me and I’ll drop you like a stone.”
Kagome furrowed her brow, tilting her head against the shoulder and glancing up. The stoic profile of her roommate met her gaze, and she immediately flushed. Sesshoumaru is carrying me? How embarrassing!
People often wondered how they got along, much less lived together, considering their stark difference in personalities. She was as loud and extroverted as he was quiet and aloof. She was absent-minded and prone to indulgence, whereas he was incredibly uptight, letting the smallest details bother him. They couldn’t be more opposite if they tried, so most assumed they had some sort of weird, sexual thing going.
I wish, she thought, concentrating on keeping the bile at the back of her throat from rising. He was the most beautiful creature she’d ever seen, with his unusual silvery hair and dark amber eyes. But, the sad truth was, he simply wanted a quiet roommate who would leave him alone, and she fit the bill – a rare considerate soul who’d lasted more than two weeks in his presence. She’d done everything she could think of to draw him into a friendship, but most of her efforts were met with cool indifference.
“In you go,” he commanded, breaking into her hazy thoughts. She landed softly on the backseat of his car, somehow managing to not hit her head against the opposite door. Something soft and warm fluttered over her, and she glanced up.
“What?” she muttered, her voice in the gravel register.
His gazed seared through her. “I don’t trust you to hold your cookies if you’re sitting up, so just relax. We’ll be home soon enough.” He tucked her feet inside and shut the door, rounding the vehicle to slip in the driver’s side.
They drove home in silence. Kagome stared at the roof as she clutched the blanket to her chest. She’d been so thrilled when her lure worked and she managed to get him to come out with her, though it was rather surprising that all it took was a sexy outfit and a promise of excitement. Unfortunately, he’d turned into a rather boring date, not really speaking to her for most of the evening, and lurking in the shadows.
Okay, so maybe the plans had changed a little. They had both been invited to a party at one of the student dorms, but when they arrived, the group unanimously decided to go into town instead. And…maybe she had let her attention be monopolized by the more flirty social stylings of Inuyasha and Koga. Those two could be pretty domineering when it came to conversation and decision-making.
“What time is it?” she asked. Sesshoumaru drove in the same manner that he generally lived, in total silence.
“12:30,” he replied tonelessly.
Kagome slumped against the seat. So, not only had she done something that warranted intervention by this staid creature, but he was also toting her back home before the party really got started.
The car eased to a stop. Kagome heard him leave, swinging his door closed with a firm shove, but he did not immediately retrieve her. She eased up, feeling lightheaded, and glanced out the window.
Of course. He was unlocking the main door to their apartment, no doubt having already figured it would be harder if he had to juggle her as well. She felt humiliated, suddenly wondering what she could have done to warrant such treatment.
He didn’t say anything as he returned, helping her get out of the car without getting tangled up in the blanket. She attempted to walk, but found herself falling over the impossible heels of her shoes. The crowning piece of this assembled outfit was now, literally, her downfall.
He caught her around the waist, patiently guiding her to their door and within with little trouble. Once inside, he flipped the lock and continued to lead her with a firm hand until they were at her bedroom door.
“I’m not a child, you know,” she groused, reaching for the key she’d hidden on her person.
“Could’ve fooled me,” he replied, supporting her shoulder as she struggled to connect the key with the lock.
She glared at him as she turned the knob, stumbling inside. She felt around for the light switch, about to retort when she realized he hadn’t followed her. Scowling, she made her way over to the bed and sank down heavily, reaching down to release her feet from the torturous boots. She sighed as she kicked them away. You were my hook, she thought, gazing at them remorsefully.
Even in the haze of her mind, she remembered so clearly the expression on his face when she presented herself to him, decked out in her sexy best. It was as if he was realizing for the first time that she was a woman, not just some entity that shared his accommodation. His eyes seemed to linger the longest on the patch of exposed skin between the hem of her miniskirt and the top of her thigh-high boots. For some small moment of time, he wanted her, and the promise of whatever lay ahead on this night.
“Here, drink this.” Suddenly he was there beside her, holding out a glass. She imagined she looked pretty pathetic as she sat there, staring up at him with tear-swollen eyes, her arms crossed over her torso as if to hold it in place.
Was that…pity she spotted in his gaze? “What is it?”
“Water,” he replied. “You had a lot to drink tonight.”
She accepted the glass, cupping it in her palms and taking a small sip. “What happened to me?” she asked softly.
He gazed down at her impassively. “You passed out because you had too much to drink. Inuyasha and Koga were tag-teaming you, and I guess you didn’t notice.” He shrugged. “You have a higher tolerance than I thought, though. I’m impressed.”
She put the glass down on the cluttered bedside table. “They probably think I’m a total loser,” she moaned, covering her face with her hands.
He didn’t answer her directly. “Go to bed,” he instructed.
“You can’t tell me what to do!” she cried out, glaring up at him with all the righteous indignation she could muster. Goddamn it, it was his fault she felt so shitty! Drunk and frustrated – not how she wanted this night to end at all.
“Stop making me regret peeling you off the floor,” he replied calmly, crossing his arms over his chest.
“How humiliating,” she snorted, grabbing the corner of the sheets and ripping them back. “No wonder everybody thinks you’re a prick, treating me like that!”
He was in her face faster than she could blink. “Let’s just get one thing straight,” he murmured, his fingers curling into the soft flesh between her neck and shoulder. “I did what I did because I care about you and I didn’t want to see you get hurt.”
She didn’t put forth any resistance as he eased her down on the mattress, looming over her for a moment like some vengeful deity. “God help me, but I care,” he sighed. “Those two idiots were taking advantage of you, and maybe they would’ve succeeded if I hadn’t been there.”
“Sesshoumaru,” she whispered, her mind filled with wonder as she looked up at him. The knot of need in her stomach tightened, and she fought with all her might against the nausea that also threatened. As his grip on her loosened, she surged forward, twisting her arms around his neck. “Thank you.”
Was her desire written on her face? She didn’t much care at this point. He exhaled sharply, his breath warm against her mouth. All he had to do was shift down a little, just the tiniest bit…
“No,” he said, reaching back to unhook her arms. “Not like this.”
She fell back with a soft gasp, her head hitting the pillows at the same moment that he flipped the covers over the rest of her body. She opened her mouth to call out to him again, but he was already gone, on silent feet, the door closing softly behind him.
She sighed, turning onto her side and curling into a ball. She was so close…
“Not like this.”
But his words gave her hope.

Kagome and Sesshoumaru do change over the course of the manga. Kagome only uses the osuwari command three times after Kikyou dies. When Sesshoumaru throws away Tenseiga in the Meidou arc, he is willing to risk his life to save his brother (of course maybe he just does not want Naraku to kill him.)

Well, personally, I feel like conflict and anti-heroes are good for the story. Inuyasha's not exactly Mr. Nice Guy to either of them, either, so I don't see the value in treating him like a sacred cow just because he's the title character.
I like both of them quite a lot, which is another reason I enjoy writing them in some form of romantic entanglement.
But if you don't even like them, why do you read fic based on them? It seems like it'd be more stressful and unsatisfying than its worth *shrug*

In Vying for Dominance he has to face an opponent he cannot beat without Tetsusaiga. He does so as Kagome's champion even though Kagome has already chosen Sesshoumaru as her mate. I have always been a sucker for medieval courtly love. (MA in Medieval European History) Those knights wrote poetry for their ladies(married to someone above them.)and fought for them, but in the end society would not allow them to be together.
As far as Sesshoumaru goes, I do bring some personal biases. Being male hetero I feel no romantic impulses towards him. When I first saw his picture I thought he was a woman. He reminds of all I ever disliked about one of my brothers who was always perfect (perfect score on SAT's, PhD in English and Philisophy and Senior Master in chess)
I have almost no interest in the S/K romance in these stories. I started reading them so I could vote on IYFG. They bring a different feel to Inuyasha than you will find in I/K. When S/K authors treat IY well I do not
find the reading stressful at all
I just finished reading all of the Harry Potter books. What struck at the end when Snape's role was finally revealed was that he was one of those tragic heroes who did what he did for the love of a woman (Lily) he could never have because of what Voldemort had done to her.

I'm something of a hapless romantic myself :) though unrequited love is too real for me to enjoy in my fantasies. If I had my druthers I'd lose myself in the history books, too, but unfortunately that's not the case. Maybe one day if I become rich and famous and can afford the tuition LOL.

That's very interesting! I'm always fascinated about what draws or repels a person to a certain character. I find the whole context of being the perfect elder heir as just another internal struggle for him to overcome. If he was so perfect, why did his father do all those things to him?
Also - I have to admit I've never thought of Inuyasha as a medieval champion, but it does put an interesting spin on his character & actions.

And they're a rare breed, no doubt about it, but not many people are up to the challenge in the first place. To me, half the fun is positioning an alternate pairing so that it's viable.
Also: you are a better man than I, because I couldn't read everything that's nommed at the IYFG - I simply don't have the time. But I'm glad someone else has a sense of fairness about what should and shouldn't be voted upon :)
Sometimes I just like to read well written stories like the ones you write whether they are S/K,I/K, Sess/Rin or otherwise.
Well, I thank you for the compliment, as I do my best :) I have my personal preferences but I, too, am willing to read outside of what I most prefer if the story is good enough.
