iyfic_contest Week 167 | Memoir (1st Place)
Based upon: Manga chapter 558, Tomorrow

This was an interesting process. Even though this is the theme I voted for, for this week's contest, I had *no idea* what to write for it. I wasn't even positive on what a memoir was...I mean, if you had to define it, how would you? That led to a trip to Wikipedia, which led to an interesting tangent on false memoirs and literary hoaxes. Seriously, if you have some time to kill, you should totally look into this stuff - just fascinating!
Anyway, now that I had an idea of what a memoir was, I had to decide what to write about. There are some good pieces going on right now that focus on a single character's introspection, and really, I wasn't getting any ideas from that angle. I tried to imagine a character finding another character's memoirs long after the fact, but that didn't amount to much, either. So, I went to bed last night, thinking it'd be mighty sad that I couldn't even write on the prompt I voted for!
When I woke up this morning, this is the idea that came to me: Memoirs of the Mikos, an ancient scroll housed at the Higurashi shrine, that would alleviate the loss Kagome's mother felt at her daughter's absence. Intriguing, yeah? Well, I was hoping for a short piece, but it kinda grew out of hand, LOL.
What would predicate Kagome's mother sitting in her daughter's room, ruminating over how much she missed her? After all, it's not really the sort of thing we've seen from her mother in the anime or manga; she seems pretty happy-go-lucky, taking things in stride. Then it struck me: empty nest syndrome. With Sota gone, and only Jii-chan to take care of from now on, of course she'd miss her kids - and her husband - more than ever.
It was tricky to write in some parts, what with the lack of names given to Kagome's parents (even her grandfather!). I'm afraid the part where Mama Higurashi bursts out with questions about her husband's death may be a bit confusing, but it was the best I could do under the circumstances. I don't like inventing names for characters if I can help it - another reason why it's awkward for me to write about these characters, as we only know their 'familiar' names, how Kagome addresses them.
But I thought it was a neat idea, to have some way to link Mama to Kagome and let her know, she was okay :) Originally the scroll was going to contain her entire history, but I kinda like the way it ended up, with the scroll in constant revisions as the history changed. Of course, you can take this idea to the end of its course and wonder if any of them will be there in their current forms since the time line has been altered, but that kinda breaks my brain, LOL! :P So don't think too far ahead!
This was a fun little piece to write. I'm quite proud of myself, for producing three distinct pieces for the contests this week even though its friggin finals time. It helps that the other two had word limits, of course :) But still, this is the most productive I've been in awhile, so hopefully that means I can get quite a bit accomplished over winter break.
