iyissekiwa #66 | Cost (1st Place)
Based upon: the universe of A Dream Deferred

Here's my reaction to winning:
o.O
I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it...and that is definitely a good thing. The lower your expectations, the more happy surprise you're able to feel. I rather like happy surprises, LOL :)
Anyway, onto the story: I'm sure quite a few of you saw this coming, if you read the original drabble. There is no potentially embarrassing personal anecdote to accompany this piece; it is merely what I feel is the natural extension of the first. Probably the hardest part about writing this one was cutting it down to 250 words - there is so much more to be said!
Kagome has recovered from the loss of their baby faster than Inuyasha, and in the midst of her grief and personal sadness, finds the determination to offer herself up to danger once again. She wants to do this for her husband, because she knows how much it would mean to him to have a family of his own, after being without one for so long.
What she didn't count on, of course, was Inuyasha feeling in any way different from her on the matter. In fact, he isn't ready to try again; after watching her suffer through the first pregnancy, and seeing how close he came to losing her while she was trying to birth his child, the last thing he wants to do is put her through that agony again.
I find it quite in keeping with his character for him to react this way, and I guess the readers at
iyissekiwa did, too :) I was very happy with the emotion I was able to convey, and the gut-punch at the end with Inuyasha's reaction.
Will there be another piece to this puzzle? All I can say is, "maybe." I had every intention of expanding the first one into a full-fledged story, but alas, other ideas have taken up residence in my cranium (most of them Sess/Kag, no less!). But obviously, this story isn't complete. It will be interesting to see where this little series leads me, though. Both of the characters are stubborn to a fault. Can Kagome convince Inuyasha her life is worth the risk? Can Inuyasha convince her that it isn't?
Hmm...
